Course 1, Discussion 4: System vs Goals
Hello Leadership Crew!
Welcome to our 4th discussion in this first course. In today's discussion, we will be talking about systems vs. goals.
To start, please read this post here and watch this video.
The basic argument here is that having a system is better than having a goal. A system is a way of behaving that helps you move towards accomplishing something. A goal is usually and end state that happens after you have accomplished something. I think eating healthy is a good example. A goal might be to lose 10 pounds. In this case, you feel kind of bad about yourself until you hit that goal; and then, once you hit it, you kind of lose the purpose because the goal has been reached. If you relapse and gain wait again, then you fall back into feeling bad about yourself again. Contrast this with a system of eating healthy.
A system might include things like: having a big glass of water prior to each meal; eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, and nuts; not eating after 9pm; and/or doing some level of intermittent fasting. You wouldn't integrate all of these new healthy eating behaviors at once. Instead, you'd gradually introduce one and then another and then another over whatever period of time makes sense. The system enables you to continuously get healthier and healthier. You will eventually reach the goal, but it'll be the byproduct of eating healthy.
This also has implications for 7 Cups as well. We might have goals of having a certain amount of group support messages or 1:1 messages. Those are fine goals to have, but we mostly want to create a system of support where people care for one another and then the natural result is an increased number of messages.

What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
Breakfast before to go to school. Better organise my schedule
What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
- wake up a bit earlier so i can take time to breakfast before to go to school.
- go to bed a bit earlier too, so i am not too tired and lazy to get out of bed in morning
- plan in advance what i will eat the next day for breakfast, make sure i have all the ingredients
@vivelespatates
Important key system Patates. It's in line with breakfast is the most important meal of the day. The behavior listed to follow this system are realistic such as waking up early, sleeping early and early planning. (PS: This is a system that I would be borrowing since I somehow never take breakfast in the morning)
@viveledpwtates
Those are great small steps to implementing a healthy lifestyle. I hope this system is going well for you and you have found it helpful to implement.
What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
Working out before classes
What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
- Get up 30 min earlier than usual
- Walking for 30-40 minutes
- Other essential exercises for 10-15 minutes
@charmingFlower8111
This is so inspiring! All the very best to you! <3
@Hope
Both the video and the article were extremely insightful. It sort of relates to being burnt out as well, doesn't it? You work yourself to the max to achieve a goal and whether or not it's achieved your burnt out. That's why long-time goals don't really shape their desirable results. Well it's just a thought :)
What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
The entire concept of focussing on the "system" rather than the 'goal' is what I need to implement. However, I feel that what I really need at the moment is to stick to the schedule I've come up with to survive the ebb and flow of my final year of high school.
✒️ What are 3 behaviours you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
The most important one would be to stick to the schedule and complete everything on the to-do list for the day. The second thing would be to maintain a journal/ fill in the pages of an empty journal so that I can reflect. And finally, I would focus on finishing a task over finishing it perfectly. Perfectionism and the pursuit of it can be a real double edged sword.
@beyoutofullkalon
I like your idea of a key system, "system over goals". After reading your comment, I realized that this is a system that has not been taken seriously as most people are goal-oriented. The behaviours of keeping a journal, filling it and evaluating it; is a perfect way to stay true to the system while ensuring a healthy mind and self awareness.
@Hope
✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
Time-management is a key system that can help me succeed because everyone has 24 hours a day. Successful people manage these hours in a way that helps them grow and profit.
✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
1. Planning my day prioritizing the important tasks and keeping them first.
2. Practicing commitment to my plan by actually doing whatever I have planned.
3. Evaluating on my plan/commitment. If I came up with a task-heavy plan per day, chances are I never finished all tasks that day. Evaluation enables learning from mistakes hence coming up with a realistic and achievable daily plan.
@JoyHappyNess
I really like this, I guess this is what I was trying to say in mine, not necessarily a schedule but time management, I also need money management but we won't go there yet.
@KarmaTheRascal
I totally relate... I like learning and trying to manage this resources... And money...(you are right, lets not get into it yet😂)
@Hope
Thank you once again for sharing valuable self-building information/resources.
It is very accurate that setting goals have consistently failed me. Every time I tend to put to a plan to achieve anything, I lose interest in it very soon, and then I am unable to achieve my goal(s).
The behavior or habits I implemented to grow in my life contain consistency, not burning out, giving time, and not pushing for something that does not lead me to where I want to be.
@Hope
This was very interesting, it made me rethink a lot of things. I had always been told that having goals was the key to success but the idea of being more focused on the systems seems to be very effective. I think I will actually buy the book to learn more. Great post.
@ArianKae It was a new idea for me too. I might buy the book too!
@Hope
✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
I need to be able to take breaks from doing long periods of work. I sometimes work too much and need to find the space and time to take a break and not think about work.
✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
I can be patient with myself as I learn new methods
I can be informative by researching and learning new methods
I can be Inclusive in allowing others to share in my journey

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
For me a key system I need to set up is an effective schedule.
✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
(1) Three behaviors I can implement to help me gradually grow the new system in my life is by getting up earlier, go to bed earlier, stop staying up so late, start telling myself I need to get up. (2) Also you know finding something to do in between the time. (3) Maybe setting the alarm clock(s). They don't really help me but maybe a way to wake myself up.
@KarmaTheRascal
Makes a lot of sense Rascal. I'm stealing the setting up alarm idea, doesn't help me sometimes but there is no harm borrowing it😃
@Hope
✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
Regularly exercising and a healthy physical body.
✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
Setting an alarm to get the right amount of sleep, eating healthily to allow my body to grow and drinking plenty of water
@ItsMrEnigma
We have the same goal of getting more exercise, I didn't include sleep in my discussion response. this was a huge oversight on my part.
I wish you the best wishes for your success in this!
@Hope
What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
🌹Ensuring I take sufficient break / rest times as I tend to throw myself into a project and then burnout having not taken enough time away from it.
What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
🌹Definitely having more patience with myself
🌹Looking into new ways to create good results
🌹Sharing with others how I feel to receive support

🌹@CurrySoup12; I can totally relate and agree with your point of being inclusive in allowing others to share your journey.
@RainbowRosie
this is an awesome system Rosie:) I can relate to taking on too many tasks sometimes and throwing all you got into that project. It’s nice but at the same time difficult sometimes:)
@RainbowRosie
it is always important to make sure you find some time for yourself so you do not burn out. I'm glad you have been able to find way so you are able to accomplish that. great job!
