Course 1, Discussion 4: System vs Goals

Hope December 5th, 2022

Hello Leadership Crew!

Welcome to our 4th discussion in this first course. In today's discussion, we will be talking about systems vs. goals.

To start, please read this post here and watch this video.

The basic argument here is that having a system is better than having a goal. A system is a way of behaving that helps you move towards accomplishing something. A goal is usually and end state that happens after you have accomplished something. I think eating healthy is a good example. A goal might be to lose 10 pounds. In this case, you feel kind of bad about yourself until you hit that goal; and then, once you hit it, you kind of lose the purpose because the goal has been reached. If you relapse and gain wait again, then you fall back into feeling bad about yourself again. Contrast this with a system of eating healthy.

A system might include things like: having a big glass of water prior to each meal; eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, and nuts; not eating after 9pm; and/or doing some level of intermittent fasting. You wouldn't integrate all of these new healthy eating behaviors at once. Instead, you'd gradually introduce one and then another and then another over whatever period of time makes sense. The system enables you to continuously get healthier and healthier. You will eventually reach the goal, but it'll be the byproduct of eating healthy.

This also has implications for 7 Cups as well. We might have goals of having a certain amount of group support messages or 1:1 messages. Those are fine goals to have, but we mostly want to create a system of support where people care for one another and then the natural result is an increased number of messages.

What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

We want to have healthier habits. We want to structure our days better for a healthier life. We want to do that together as a family.

What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

We started by getting up a little earlier and take a short walk before breakfast. It helps us start the day better. We are now making lunch our main meal. With a bigger and healthier lunch we hope that we will be able to have smaller and earlier dinners and go to bed less full and less exhausted. After that we want to add another short physical activity.

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

Right now I'm more focused on advanced career systems in my area of work.

✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

I can implement further relevant professional education. I also can network with those in my field with skills I'm trying to advance toward. Lastly, I can hold self accountability in staying the course and consistency.

There are three key systems that I want to succeed with. I will only implement one at a time and hope I begin the next one at a good time.
I want to eat less. Not particularly better because I am already aware of what I eat. But I do tend to eat more than I am comfortable with, physically. Not in an "I'm fat way" but in an "I can tell my body needs less" way.
Focusing more on school to be able to learn rather than going through the motions of the work.
Exercising.

The behaviors I'm going to implement to get there are simple. I hate eating breakfast because I usually haven't done anything to warrant needing energy yet. So, I'll partner that with focusing on school and have morning coffee early in the morning. To wake myself up and start the day. I will make sure I have time to go either walk outside or walk up and down my stairs a few times. That and a pilates move for my stomach. My behavior is to be productive in the morning so that I have motivation and belief in myself to get my studying done later in the day. I believe I have it blocked out for 1 to 5. Including breaks, of course.

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

To continue my intermittent fasting and to draw more often.

✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

To continue to fast the days I have already been fasting on, to continue drinking enough water so that I make sure that I stay hydrated, to make sure that I break the fast if I get a migraine attack.

To make time for myself to draw, to browse the internet for ideas to draw and to draw when I find myself wanting to

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed? The key system I need to set up is having an alignment across the various caps I wear on a day-to-day basis.

✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life? The 3 behaviours would be, segregating the roles definitively, speaking to someone on a regular basis, and journaling down my daily thoughts and reflections.

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

Doing more self care (:

✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

-Finding things I enjoy doing that relax me, and that I like!

-Planning time to do these things, coming up with a schedule.

-Sticking to the schedule, not taking away self care breaks once they are added.

@TabbyCat97 that is such an important thing to work towards!

Self-care is definitely very important and I'm so glad you're taking care to include it in your schedule. We love seeing you around cups and it's always amazing when you're around. I hope you take good care of yourself and keep coming around!

I really enjoyed this video, often I find myself making new goals but not materialising them. I think a system I need to evolve is definitely putting time aside each day to work on my research paper - its much easier to say I want to complete this than to actually take time and do it!.

3 behaviours that could help with this are - finishing daily chores as early as possible to leave the evening free, maintaining a clear workspace to avoid distractions and chunking the work to make it feel more manageable!

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

I think my biggest struggle in terms of my day-to-day work and assignments or projects in general is actually getting the work done on time. So I would quite benefit from having a system in place that gets me working on my tasks while being conscious of the timeline. I think even something as small as getting me started will be good enough because once I start, the rest is pretty smooth sailing.

✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

More organization can definitely be a good start. I've heard that things like checklists or to-do lists are also good tools for procrastination.

I think having a mapped-out calendar of what tasks I have and what are their respective deadlines for example could also help me be more productive and keep me from wasting time.

Last but not least, I think having a study or work partner can help with better focus and motivation so I don't get distracted as often.

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

I need a key system for time management. It's pretty nonexistent right now, and I tend to do most things at the last minute lately.

✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

Stick to a daily schedule, prioritize, and set reasonable time limits.

What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

Something that I need to set up is a study system that allows me to stop getting distracted. I have ADHD so this would help me tremendously

What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

  • Keeping a to do list next to my computer
  • Having set times in the day that I will sit and study/read material
  • Have music on that allows me to focus instead of having the TV on
