...See more Hello, everyone! It is good to be back after a brief self-care break. 🌱 Guided Discussion Series: I want to let everyone know that the Guided Session series [https://www.7cups.com/forum/personalitydisorders/General_2436/AnnouncementThreadforGuidedDiscussions_313823/] will resume after 12/03, every Wednesday. (Please be on the lookout 👀 for the new schedule) 🍁 November Monthly Event: On November 23rd, as a part of the Personality Disorders Subcommunity monthly event, there will be an Open Discussion at 10 AM! 🍬 This will be an open, judgment-free zone to discuss our thoughts about the upcoming holidays. See you there and Happy Thanksgiving! ------ Holidays can be a difficult time. Although they are generally associated with happiness, warmth, and company, it can sometimes be difficult to feel the holiday spirit. (According to the American Psychological Association, 38% of people surveyed said their stress increased during the holiday season and the National Alliance on Mental Illness [https://nami.org/mhstats] noted that 64% of individuals living with a mental illness felt that their conditions worsened around the holidays.) Please join us to discuss your thoughts around the holidays and share any feedback for future discussions and/or guided sessions.
Will the real Gilbird please stand up?

...See more Hello! My name is Gilbird. 🍬 Who am I? I'm Gilbird and I am an engineer. I work to build non-invasive and accessible patient-centered healthcare technology, primarily using automatic control and signal processing techniques. 🍬 Why am I here? I used to struggle for many years with periods of depression, anxiety, and insomnia (among other things). My symptoms manifested physically to the point at which I could not distinguish what was actually wrong, but I felt so tired and frustrated all the time. It took me years to realize that all of these episodes were due to long-term PTSD and c-PTSD. The recovery process was difficult, but I have come a long way! (Thank you: exercise, somatic breathing techniques 🌱, and positive self-talk) Trauma-informed care is an issue close to my heart and the healing process looks different for everyone. I am here to spread the word about trauma-informed care, learn from everyone, and ensure we have a safe space to share our thoughts. (: 🍬 Who am I on 7 Cups? Some of you may know me as the host for Sunday Open Discussions in the Trauma Support community. Others may have seen me in other places around 7 Cups. I have been a listener for a while now, but I started branching out into Group Support in early 2022 since I wanted to connect with more people, share my experiences, and learn from others' experiences. 🍬 Going Forwards: I have truly enjoyed my time hosting discussions so far and am very thankful to all members and listeners in the Trauma community for being so brave in sharing their experiences, warmly welcoming new members, and being so focused and on-topic during discussions. I look forward to getting to know more of you! 🍬 Where to find me: 🌸 I host Sunday Open Discussions (3 times a month) and am planning to host our Grounding and Somatic Exercise Session  [https://www.7cups.com/forum/trauma/General_2433/GroundingandSomaticExerciseSession_312880/]🌱 [https://www.7cups.com/forum/trauma/General_2433/GroundingandSomaticExerciseSession_312880/]. 🌸 Please feel free to drop by my PM's to say Hello!

Grounding and Somatic Exercise Session 🌱 🌸

...See more This is a post to gauge interest! 💡 Would anyone here be interested in attending a discussion that focuses solely on guiding participants through grounding and somatic exercises to relieve tension? (This was brought up during a Sunday Open Discussion) This session will include sensory grounding exercises, pressure-based breathing exercises, and other maneuvers to directly activate the vagus nerve and physiologically calm down a sympathetic nervous response (fight-or-flight). Guests will be walked through each exercise as we do/learn them together. Proposed 1-hour session with 5 components: * Welcome and Introductions (5 mins) * What are physical grounding exercises? What are somatic exercises? Why are we focusing on body-focused grounding? Mind-Body connection (15 mins) * 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding (15 mins) * Exercises to stimulate Vagus Nerve (Deep Breathing with Pressure, Pressure Points) (15 mins) * Debriefing, Q/A (10 mins) The goal of this session is to help guests feel safe in their own bodies and learn how to quickly calm down trauma responses when they occur. Often, it can be difficult to think one's way through a racing mind and a body that is activated [https://now.tufts.edu/2023/01/31/shining-light-biological-origins-ptsd]. With trauma, thoughts can tend to spiral. Additionally, those with C-PTSD [https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/24881-cptsd-complex-ptsd] and anxiety disorders can often be living in a state of constant activation, without knowing the cause or how to proceed. In these situations, trying out somatic exercises may be useful! Please let me know in the comments if you are interested in this session and feel free to list any other exercises you would like to see! 🌸 🌱 Longer Explanation: * Complex, developmental, and relational trauma (C-PTSD) can alter the nervous system to remain in a constant state of being prepared for danger. Trauma survivors may exist feeling on-edge, hypervigilant, or hyperaroused (activated) for some or most of the time. They may also feel the complete opposite — numb, disconnected, or shut-down (hypoaroused). Some may feel a combination of the two. * Since the occurrence of trauma changes neurological pathways in response to situations, it alters one's ability to feel steady, stable, and safe in one's own body. The nervous system has a harder time regulating itself long after the traumatic events of the past. We might find ourselves living in a constant state of activation, struggling to ever feel regulated or calm! * Thus, before we can tackle changing neural pathways and heal from trauma, it's important to first feel safe in one's own body. This is where somatic and vagus nerve-centered exercises may come into play.
