Course 1, Discussion 4: System vs Goals
Hello Leadership Crew!
Welcome to our 4th discussion in this first course. In today's discussion, we will be talking about systems vs. goals.
To start, please read this post here and watch this video.
The basic argument here is that having a system is better than having a goal. A system is a way of behaving that helps you move towards accomplishing something. A goal is usually and end state that happens after you have accomplished something. I think eating healthy is a good example. A goal might be to lose 10 pounds. In this case, you feel kind of bad about yourself until you hit that goal; and then, once you hit it, you kind of lose the purpose because the goal has been reached. If you relapse and gain wait again, then you fall back into feeling bad about yourself again. Contrast this with a system of eating healthy.
A system might include things like: having a big glass of water prior to each meal; eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, and nuts; not eating after 9pm; and/or doing some level of intermittent fasting. You wouldn't integrate all of these new healthy eating behaviors at once. Instead, you'd gradually introduce one and then another and then another over whatever period of time makes sense. The system enables you to continuously get healthier and healthier. You will eventually reach the goal, but it'll be the byproduct of eating healthy.
This also has implications for 7 Cups as well. We might have goals of having a certain amount of group support messages or 1:1 messages. Those are fine goals to have, but we mostly want to create a system of support where people care for one another and then the natural result is an increased number of messages.

What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
Honestly, I need to learn how to be more organized. Do not get me wrong, I am the type of person that knows where everything is in a room of clutter... but the moment someone moves something from where I put it, my life falls in shambles. Lol. In all seriousness, I have never been the organized person in "real life" but on paper, all my papers and notes have to be consistent and organized.
What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
3 things that I could implement to help me grow in that new system are: jotting down my ideas and reasons for wanting to be organized, sorting through things and declutter things in my life that serve no purpose, and being more consistent. I feel that if my life is more organized and I do not have so many things then the insides of me will be more at ease.
@YourCaringConfidant
I do definetely need to be organised, and I missed that in my answer :) But I do know that we can always improve and I really know that you can.
@iPHOENIX You are too kind and encouraging! Thank you for that. ♡ I believe that we can do anything!
@YourCaringConfidant
wao, that's a good perspective you are having about building the system to be more organized. I am sure it will go well. 💛
@Hope

@BenittaJ
This seems like a great system (i almost said goal >-< im still learning) to have. I know everyone here at cups will be with you every step of the way. I wish you the best on your journey, and hey, you got this :D
✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
Concentration, healthy living style (eating & fitness) and active living (like going out and things).
✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
Stop being lazy and procastinating, eat healthy, excircise and aslo change mindset.
@iPHOENIX I am glad that you identified 3 very big, important things that you know you need to improve on and implement in your new system. You are an amazing person and capable of so much! I wish you all the success!
@YourCaringConfidant
I wish you same and I believe in you, that you can do anything you set your mind.
@iPHOENIX
I noticed you said, "Stop being lazy and procastinating", which is valid but appears to be goals focused; perhaps it would be better to define what you mean by the lazy aspect. Maybe something like
"Tend to my chores daily."
Therefore, it doesn't have an end to it once you complete it; it's still an ongoing thing :)
@FrenchMarbles I can understand your point and I appreciate you pointing out.
But I have a different idea about being lazy and procrastinating, because I don't think it's a goal oriented mainly because it's not a single thing like any other goal like make money or workout. It's related to everything, so stop being lazy is applicable to everything we are being lazy about and stopping it will actually be a system itself.
Also I'm not someone who follow anything blindly so I don't believe we shouldn't have any goal at all too. ☺ it's a person/s opinion, I respect that and I want to learn and implement it too if it's good for me.
✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
I think a key system that I need to set up in my life is being more organized/clean. If i can be clean and organized, I might be able to clear my mind a bit.
✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
I think maybe cleaning just a little bit everyday, instead of binge cleaning. Maybe being open-minded and knowing there will be days when i don't get as much done. Starting off simple, one small task added to the system each day will also prevent me from getting discouraged and exhausted.
@Jefferythebunny319
I'm sure you'll make great progress. It shows that you understand the value of starting small and being compassionate toward yourself 🍀
@Hope
1. What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
A key system that I need to set up in my life at present is staying hydrated, eating healthy, and exercising often.
2. What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
<3 Starting small and increasing gradually:
It will help me blend into the system at my own pace and avoid burnout.
<3 Tracking progress:
One of the things that can cause a disruption in building a new system is a lack of consistency. Tracking progress will help me gain confidence that I can do it and maintain consistency.
<3 Self-compassion:
One key point to learn about building a new system or implementing changes in lifestyle is that it takes time and effort. We may fail to meet the needs of our new system at times and we must know that it is okay. During this period we could feel burnout or overwhelmed so we must remain compassionate towards ourselves and appreciate ourselves for trying.
@Mitanshi003. Hope your system will work and you will get success.
@Mitanshi003
I like how you set your system! Good luck :)

@Tobedoctor
This sounds like a great plan. It sounds more like a goal instead of a system but passing exams is always good. Building those systems of studying and daily activities is good structure for the future.
@FrenchMarbles I am sure that you make great progress! But don't hurt yourself with the daily gym routine! ❤️
@Hope
✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
Since I have a history of eating disorders I would say the answer to this question instead of weight loss is just to be healthy! Numbers on a scale are not that important, being healthy is.
✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
1. Healthy food
2. Work-out 3-5x times per week
3. Loving yourself! ❤️
@Trintzu hello friend! :) yes, I can relate to your words about ED. It is sooooo hard to be mentally positive in this case.
Good luck on your journey! :)
@calmingsun111 Sending some warm hugs to you! ❤️
@Hope ✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
A key system is - drinking more water and not be so hard on myself. Mentally set up my mind that all will be well if I learn how to accept me as... myself! :)
✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
I need to be more patient, more openminded and calm :)
@calmingsun111
Those are some really good traits to have
1 developing a plan that can help achieve my goals on cups and real life.
1 make sure I have a support system in place.
2 have a plan on how I can achieve the goals.
3 do not give up when things get too hard.
@harmonyLearninghope I'm very curious what is this plan ;) But I sure respect you don't want put it public on forums.
I'm sure you can achieve your goals! If you want to share more in pm, feel free to ;) There is sure a way to get support on cups :D
