Course 1, Discussion 4: System vs Goals

Hope December 5th, 2022

Hello Leadership Crew!

Welcome to our 4th discussion in this first course. In today's discussion, we will be talking about systems vs. goals.

To start, please read this post here and watch this video.

The basic argument here is that having a system is better than having a goal. A system is a way of behaving that helps you move towards accomplishing something. A goal is usually and end state that happens after you have accomplished something. I think eating healthy is a good example. A goal might be to lose 10 pounds. In this case, you feel kind of bad about yourself until you hit that goal; and then, once you hit it, you kind of lose the purpose because the goal has been reached. If you relapse and gain wait again, then you fall back into feeling bad about yourself again. Contrast this with a system of eating healthy.

A system might include things like: having a big glass of water prior to each meal; eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, and nuts; not eating after 9pm; and/or doing some level of intermittent fasting. You wouldn't integrate all of these new healthy eating behaviors at once. Instead, you'd gradually introduce one and then another and then another over whatever period of time makes sense. The system enables you to continuously get healthier and healthier. You will eventually reach the goal, but it'll be the byproduct of eating healthy.

This also has implications for 7 Cups as well. We might have goals of having a certain amount of group support messages or 1:1 messages. Those are fine goals to have, but we mostly want to create a system of support where people care for one another and then the natural result is an increased number of messages.

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

I would like to start eating three meals a day and eating healthier.

✒️ What are 3 behaviours you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

I will start to plan my meals, so I can decide which ingredients I need to buy. I will go to the shops when necessary and buy fresh ingredients that are necessary for the meals I will make. I will plan to make homemade foods too, so that I will be encouraged to make healthier meals.

Great to see you giving this exercise a go! I can assure you that the concept of marginal gains (systems vs goals) is part of a wider system to help you gain more efficient momentum and happiness in life. Best out there with your personal goals and associated steps!

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

Learning and organisational system - marginal gains, kolb's experiential cycle, 30DP - scripted actions for limiting habits, scheduling nuances, eisenhower matrix, SIR... etc

✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

1. Set up a 2 hour practice block everyday (important task). Within the timeblock, I specifically focus on testing out experiments created from Kolb's. This timeblock should be placed within a time where it is not compromised by other tasks easily. It should also involve scripted actions against limiting habits and possible distractors. Using special scientifically-proven music for neural-locking state while completing deep-work.

2. Marginal Gains ICS Worksheet: Do a Weekly/Monthly/Quarterly/Annual audit of all the skills I am learning. Evaluate my rating, steps to achieve conscious competency (80% quality, 80% consistency) what specific actions and thoughts I am doing, what a professional would be doing, analyse which points I missed out for "steps to achieve conscious competency" vs "professional". Re-rate myself. Complete evaluation again to mitigate chance of bias. Evaluate my biggest weakness out of all the skills. What is a "1%" gain I can do to help me get started on progressing towards mitigating my next weakest skill to work on? Start experimenting on it using 2 hour blocks where applicable + BEDSM skill where required. Reflect the day after completing an experiment using Kolb's cycle.

Rinse and repeat. Complete weekly audit of skill progress. (SMARTER Goals integration required within MG worksheet, and 30DP for progression).

3. Balancing my system by allocating at least 1 hour each week for activities relating to Psychological, Social, Physical and Spiritual sections for psychological needs fulfilment. Utilise scheduling nuances and categorising at least one activity from each section as important on Eisenhower matrix. Scheduling these important tasks AFTER scheduling non-negotiable tasks (do or reduce lifespan: eat, sleep, exercise) when scheduling, and adhering to correct scheduling practices - contingency time (1 hour every day minimum), 15 min gaps b/w tasks, at least 1x 15 minute buffer for batch/delay tasks, overshooting task completion using the 2.5x expected time rule, completing most important task at start of day after waking up due to brainwaves (delta) optimal to flow state straight after waking up.

✒️ What is key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

Ever since I acknowledged the dangers of neglecting my physical health, I have identified three behaviors that I gradually weaved into my life to ensure the convenience of my body. First, I'm going to make it a priority to set aside time each day for exercise that I truly enjoy, even if I am busy. It could be as simple as going out for a walk, doing yoga, or even a bike ride with my friends. The key is to keep my body moving and have fun while doing it! Secondly, I want to nourish myself with wholesome, delicious meals that make me feel healthy. This means indulging in vibrant fruits and vegetables (my favorites!), lean proteins, and whole grains while reducing my intake of junk food. Lastly, I won't forget the importance of self-care. I'll make sure to carve out moments of relaxation and recharge, especially by doing mediation on a daily basis. After all, it's all about finding a sense of balance and taking care of both my body and mind! 💪🏻✨

✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

I can implement three behaviors that will help me make progress. Firstly, I will start small and build consistency. I'll set realistic goals that I know I can achieve and gradually increase the intensity or duration as I become more comfortable and confident. This way, I won't overwhelm myself and will build a solid foundation for long-term success. Secondly, I will prioritize accountability. I'll find ways to hold myself accountable, such as tracking my progress, sharing my goals with a trusted friend or family member, or joining a supportive community that shares similar health goals. Such external support and accountability will keep me motivated and on track. Lastly, I will practice self-compassion and patience. I understand that building a new system takes time and effort. I'll be kind to myself if I have setbacks or challenges along the way, and I'll remind myself that it's all part of the journey.
