Course 3: PL 102 - One Key Metric (Discussion 5)

GlenM August 26th, 2020

We've been talking about denial and distraction in this course. It is pretty easy to get knocked off track in life. One way to stay on track is to have a core metric that guides you. If you have a north star that you are working towards, then you know how well you are doing. It is harder to be in denial or to participate in activities that are less helpful in meeting that goal. Â

There are 2 parts to this discussion. Â

1. Work with your team or mentor and identify the key metric you are hoping to help move. Post daily (or the cadence that makes sense) in the  3 key things thread to highlight what you are doing to help us move 7 Cups forward. Please post here why this goal of choosing a single metric is important. Think of how this is important in your professional life, but also how this can help you personally as well. Â

2. (TW: themes that deal with death) Read chapter 12 and do the exercise where you imagine it is the end of your life. If comfortable, post what you imagine people saying to you at the conclusion of the exercise. If not comfortable, then please share how the exercise impacted you. What you imagine them telling you is your compass. If you are acting in a way that is consistent with what they are saying, then it is very likely that you will end up living a meaningful life. Remember to listen to and follow this compass so as not to be distracted by the clock. Â

1. Please post here why this goal of choosing a single metric is important. Think of how this is important in your professional life, but also how this can help you personally as well.

This is important in both personal and professional life because it allows me to focus on one thing, one specific goal. One thing at a time because if you have several objectives at the same time you risk being overwhelmed.

2- Read chapter 12 and do the exercise where you imagine it is the end of your life. If comfortable, post what you imagine people saying to you at the conclusion of the exercise.

Adult Child : Mom was my best friend. She was always my support and made sure that I never doubted her love. She taught me to trust my abilities and never give up on my dreams.

Spouse : She let down her barriers. She loved me without fear. Together, we have built something solid and eternal.

Friend : She was always ready to lend her support. She nurtured our friendship. She was a faithful friend.

1 Why choosing a single metric is important

A single indicator that we can monitor regularly, particularly within us, let us measure if we are keeping in the track we have established for ourselves, or on the contrary, how much we are deviating from the direction we want to go. It help us establish “alarms” to set off when we find ourselves deviating too much from our path, and thus take correcting actions to get back to our path.

2. What I imagine people saying to me at he end of my life.

My wife
- He was always loyal.
- He was a great companion, in the good ones and the bad ones.
- He treated me always with love and respect, from bringing me flowers every day, to washing the dishes every night.

My grown child.
- He always loved me and supported me.
- He believed in me and made me believe in myself.
- He worked hard and made all the efforts possible to ensure I had what was necessary for my life, from my cradle to university studies.

My best friend.
- He was always for me when I needed him.
- He lifted my spirits when I was down.
- He would always listen attentively to me, congratulating me about my happy moments, and feeling with me my sad times

My co-worker.
- He was a loyal team player, he worked to make our team succeed and was generous with his time for that.
- He was honest in words and deeds. Never played dirty tricks.
- He always helped me to the full extent of his capabilities.

1.) Why is this goal of choosing a single metric is important? Think of how this is important in your professional life, but also how this can help you personally as well.
Choosing a single metric, for me personally, keeps me focused. I know I'm very scatter-brained, and there are always a million and one things floating around in my brain. I even tried keeping a planner, but that just annoyed me and I couldn't keep up with it because it messed up my "groove". Focus solely on one thing at a time is the most beneficial for me

2. Read chapter 12 and do the exercise where you imagine it is the end of your life. If comfortable, post what you imagine people saying to you at the conclusion of the exercise. Death is my biggest fear. I don't want to have to leave the people who love me behind without me, so this impact kinda scared me. Once I got passed that part, it made me see who I really am, and how other people see me. I've been hiding myself toward some people, and so what they said, wasn't what I would want them to say. I want to be myself, and I should stop trying so hard to be what I already am. I stress myself out for nothing, and I'm so worried about dying because I don't want to come to a point where I have unfinished business due to the fact that I was unable to open up to the people I'm closest to. I should stay true to who I am, and not let those around me struggle to figure me out.

1. By keeping your focus on one thing you are able to pour all of your efforts into it, thus producing more quality results instead of just quantity.

2. It was impactful and sobering to acknowledge how others might perceive you.

1. To have some time for ourselves as it'll help our performance. Choosing a single metric is important because it can help us and other people around us. I believe that a single metric I could use is balancing my time better, because I'm a really messy person when it comes to managing my time and it'd help me alot.

2. The exercise impacted impacted me in a kind of good way. It helped me realise how I want to be. I don't exactly act that way now, but I try to change myself for the better. And I hope it'll help me have a meaningful life.

Posted previously in the 3 key things thread! Choosing a single metric is important for several reasons. A key metric would provide a way to determine if the goal is achieved, and if the goals are not reached, the metric would be able to provide a range of how far the goal is compared to current times. A single metric, not just several metrics, let us focus one thing at a time, providing quality over quantity. It is also a way to not overwhelm anyone and keep everything intact and not in a confused mess. Professionally, many things would be completed faster with better quality, and personally, it is also better for our mental health as it avoid multitasking on too many tasks!

Oh my, this hit deep and hard, and in fact, I have almost been thinking about that for quite a while already; the whole end of the life thing and what other's might think about me. It is honestly my overthinking sometimes, and to answer the question, I really don't know, which is why I am still consistently thinking about it ahaha. I'm very close to my family, especially my mother, so I am sure that she would say something super heartbreaking in a good and sad way, and I feel like she would be the one that cares about it the most. And other than her, I'll be honest and say that I'm not sure about anyone else. I have a few close friends, but at the same time, we do not seem too close; I am just not too sure about anything. Does it mean I am living a meaningful life? I'm not sure, and it definitely will be something haunting me afterwards. I would like to think that my life was meaningful on 7 cups and for the care I showed, but sometimes it is really hard to read and know what people think about you.

1:The metric am hoping to work on was the metric of quality on the server and has been mostly done by doing mock chats on here.

2:It reminded me to view ourselves in term of how others think about us.

Increase the ratio of positive to negative interactions people have here.

It helps with seeing how things are going, if things are improving, getting worse, if things need to be adjusted, etc.

I found this really upsetting. It's hard to disconnect this exercise from essentially being told I was dying by a few doctors less than a year ago. I didn't find this to be beneficial at all to my personal wellbeing.

Answer 1: It's important because it helps you determine what you need to do in a clear manner.

Answer 2. It really helped me strive to become a better person!
