Course 3: PL 102 - One Key Metric (Discussion 5)

GlenM August 26th, 2020

We've been talking about denial and distraction in this course. It is pretty easy to get knocked off track in life. One way to stay on track is to have a core metric that guides you. If you have a north star that you are working towards, then you know how well you are doing. It is harder to be in denial or to participate in activities that are less helpful in meeting that goal. Â

There are 2 parts to this discussion. Â

1. Work with your team or mentor and identify the key metric you are hoping to help move. Post daily (or the cadence that makes sense) in the  3 key things thread to highlight what you are doing to help us move 7 Cups forward. Please post here why this goal of choosing a single metric is important. Think of how this is important in your professional life, but also how this can help you personally as well. Â

2. (TW: themes that deal with death) Read chapter 12 and do the exercise where you imagine it is the end of your life. If comfortable, post what you imagine people saying to you at the conclusion of the exercise. If not comfortable, then please share how the exercise impacted you. What you imagine them telling you is your compass. If you are acting in a way that is consistent with what they are saying, then it is very likely that you will end up living a meaningful life. Remember to listen to and follow this compass so as not to be distracted by the clock. Â

Identify the key metric you are hoping to help move.

I have posted in that thread a few times in the past. Consistency is the key metric for me.

Why is this goal of choosing a single metric is important?

Because it forces you to be selective in chosing the most important metric and also because it focuses your attention on choosing just one. If you have too many metrics it becomes much harder to keep them all in order, managed and sorted out.

Read chapter 12 and do the exercise where you imagine it is the end of your life. If comfortable, share what you imagine people saying to you at the conclusion of the exercise. If not comfortable, then please share how the exercise impacted you.

This exercise made me realize the importance of living, instead of just being alive.

1. Focusing on something solely could perhaps help us to do most work on it. When working on one thing, we can dedicate time, effort and countless attempts to the goal.

2. I wasn't prepared for that! I've thought about what would happen before, though I can honestly say I am nowhere near that point in my life (or I hope I'm not). It was rather difficult to think about it all, though I believe it was of some benefit, at least to see where my priorities lie.

1.) It's important to have a single key metric to help us stay alert and focused instead of being distracted by uneccessary things.

2.) This exercise makes me realize what truly is important in my life. And now that I know what I want, I can start planning and committing to it.

1. Work with your team or mentor and identify the key metric you are hoping to help move. Post daily (or the cadence that makes sense) in the 3 key things thread to highlight what you are doing to help us move 7 Cups forward. On a lot of real-world projects that are time-limited, I'd imagine that the key metric or measure of success is whether a finished product was delivered by a particular deadline. There are a lot of important details that can't be glossed over like how *good* the product is and all of the particular specifications/requirements for the product. But usually the mandate or bottom line is, "Get it to us by this date."

For 7 Cups teams that have recurring/long-term projects, I imagine that the key metric will usually match whatever is being tracked by a quota. For example, if there's a quota to do X chats per week, then the key metric is # of chats.

The key metric/quota concept has some benefits both for those leading the project and those performing the work. Leaders have something they can point to as a measure of success (e.g. "yay we did X chats this month"). For those doing the work, the quota helps set expectations: I know that if I do this much (and I do it well), then I have satisfied my responsibility and nobody can complain that I'm not doing enough.

The potential risk with one key metric that it could be used to oversimplify complex problems or deny/distract from issues that fall outside what's captured by the metric.

2. Read chapter 12 and do the exercise where you imagine it is the end of your life. If comfortable, post what you imagine people saying to you at the conclusion of the exercise. I want there to be people who see me as being fundamentally feminine and with whom I've been able to safely regress emotionally. Even if they're not the ones speaking at my funeral or they refuse to say anything out of respect for my privacy, I want there to be people who have seen through to the bottom of me and felt enriched by what they've found, like they were viewing a beautiful painting and enraptured by the different colors.

[Responding further to an item in the required discussion questions]

The key metric I anticipate that we would use for Anonymous Evaluations is # of listeners evaluated.

1) The key metric - Listener Quality Rating. (Posted my steps in the 3 key things)
Coz that directly or indirectly affects the whole site.

2) It made me think of me going away before my time. Which I do not want to do. So, I discontinued the exercise.

Having a single metric is important because it allows us to focus on that one thing and see the progression or the digression as time goes by. Te point is to exceed it and pick another metric and to keep it going until we reach our end goal.

My friends would say I was funny and was always available to help whenever I could. I was the calm one in the group and kept everyone laughing. My family would say I was the glue of the family and the most level-headed. Significant other would say I was dedicated to the relationship and made them a better person. Believe it or not, I think about this all the time. How do my loved ones see me? Am I caring enough, funny enough, responsible enough. I would want them to celebrate me at the end.

Balance in life

Why is this goal of choosing a single metric is important?

Because if I can become more disciplined in balancing my life, I will be more well-rounded and able to perform better in all things. Rest is not something I can do very well, so that is sort of a fun problem to have I guess.

Read chapter 12 and do the exercise where you imagine it is the end of your life. If comfortable, share what you imagine people saying to you at the conclusion of the exercise. If not comfortable, then please share how the exercise impacted you.

I imagine them saying, that I worked hard, cared passionately about things, and needed to take more time for fun

Please post here why this goal of choosing a single metric is important. Think of how this is important in your professional life, but also how this can help you personally as well.

It is important to have an example to follow and an idea of where you are going.

2. Read chapter 12 and do the exercise where you imagine it is the end of your life. If comfortable, post what you imagine people saying to you at the conclusion of the exercise.

It's a chapter that really hits close to home! Very good to read.

1. I've pst 3 key things in the past. Hope I can achieve the goal and keep the 'important thing' in my life.

2. If not comfortable, then please share how the exercise impacted you.

This exercise makes me think about my life and how am I going to make an impact. Am I really treating the one I love with the respect and love that they deserve? Will there be someone even cry for me at my funeral? maybe I need to be more mindful, enjoy life much more and make more memories with family.

1. Whis is it important to have a single metric.

Having a single metric is important because it helps me to stay on track and progress. My present goal is acquiring more knowledge to use my time more effectively on 7cups.

2. Post what you imagine people saying to you at the conclusion of the exercise.

(this is actually what they said to me with the exemption of the child, since I do not have a child)

Spouse: She was a loving person. She worked hard to achieve her goals. Despite all the challenges in life she never gave up.

Grown child (imagined): She was a caring mother and whenever I was in pain, she was there for me. She could be very funny, let her inner child out and make me laugh. When I felt down she showered me with love and showed me ways to cope.

Friend: She was a true friend. Whenever I needed her she was there for me. She would give her last penny to help.

Completed 3 key things today, will continue with it
