Course 3: PL 102 - One Key Metric (Discussion 5)

GlenM August 26th, 2020

We've been talking about denial and distraction in this course. It is pretty easy to get knocked off track in life. One way to stay on track is to have a core metric that guides you. If you have a north star that you are working towards, then you know how well you are doing. It is harder to be in denial or to participate in activities that are less helpful in meeting that goal. Â

There are 2 parts to this discussion. Â

1. Work with your team or mentor and identify the key metric you are hoping to help move. Post daily (or the cadence that makes sense) in the  3 key things thread to highlight what you are doing to help us move 7 Cups forward. Please post here why this goal of choosing a single metric is important. Think of how this is important in your professional life, but also how this can help you personally as well. Â

2. (TW: themes that deal with death) Read chapter 12 and do the exercise where you imagine it is the end of your life. If comfortable, post what you imagine people saying to you at the conclusion of the exercise. If not comfortable, then please share how the exercise impacted you. What you imagine them telling you is your compass. If you are acting in a way that is consistent with what they are saying, then it is very likely that you will end up living a meaningful life. Remember to listen to and follow this compass so as not to be distracted by the clock. Â

Identify the key metric you are hoping to help move.

My key metric is time management.

Why is this goal of choosing a single metric is important?

So that I can slowly improve, day by day.

Read chapter 12 and do the exercise where you imagine it is the end of your life. If comfortable, share what you imagine people saying to you at the conclusion of the exercise. If not comfortable, then please share how the exercise impacted you.

The exercise impacted me by making me realize I have little imagination and am not good at putting myself in others' shoes. I have no clue as to what my loved ones would say!

My goal at 7 Cups as both a leader and a listener is providing consistent quality. To that end, I am working towards building relationships with my team and with other leaders, writing discussions on topics as needed/requested by members and teams, and being dependable.

The three things I would like to be remembered about me is that I am a kind, loving person, I am faithful and loyal, and I worked hard to live my truth.

A single key metric important to keep our attention focused on a particular thng rather than many things at once. doing so we can eliminate the possibilty of being distracted from our ultimate goal.

2.

The exercise helped me to see whats important to me and not. I imagined what i would like people to say about me, i would like my patner to think and truthfully say that i was able to take care of them the best way, always be there for them and was the best wife they can imagine. I want my kids to look back and realise honestly that i always supported them, gave them freedom and helped them to become better individuals. its also veryy important to me that i dont cause them any emotional distress. i want my co-workers or friends to think i really made huge positive impact on their life. but there is one thing about the exercise that shocked me- the fact that i wasnt scared to face death. maybe its because I'm too young and has no serious commitments or something else. I'm usually someone who feels emotions strongly but i didnt really feel anything this time.

That's an interesting thing you discovered about yourself! That's the amazing thing about self-reflection and deep thinking exercises, you can come across a breakthrough.

The single metric helps us identify where we stand in our path toward our professional and personal goals. It brings to our awareness of the important issues that we need to tackle in order to achieve our professional and personal aspirations.

The exercise has been an eye-opener for me. It has created an urgency in me that I focus on spending maximum time in my Quadrant II. Thank you for creating such a wonderful, helpful and informative exercise.

Yes, to prioritise our goals and to keep focus on them. I remember a task someone said to do to write down 20 of your goals in order of most importance to you. Then, scrap the bottom 15 and forget about them. Focus only on your top 5.

I want to focus on helping 7 Cups have more quality listeners. I am sad when I hear members say that the have listeners that are "bad" or that don't respond. The key metric I can use right now is the quota/tracker I have as a chat supporter. Additionally, I can coach and mentor other listeners to help them grow! Choosing a single key metric is important to help us build a habit. Doing too much at once can be counterproductive.

Spouse: Jaimie was a loving being, not just to me but to everyone. She was my first love and my wife. I feel so, so lucky to have been able to spend so many years with her.

Friend: Jaimie is a friend I respect and admire. They had a conviction for equality and compassion that I have not seen in anyone else. They opened my mind to so many new ways of viewing the world, and I am going to miss them dearly.

Coworker: Jaimie was a beloved therapist in our field. They obviously cared for their clients and was always ready to learn new techniques to be better able to support them. Lots of us were inspired by her thinking and enjoyed sharing our knowledge with their enthusiastic self.

Ive posted here in the past and have done so again today. Its important to choose a single metric because it guides us and help us follow through.

It shows you who you want to be and if you are that person now or if there are some changes you want to make in your life.

1. Why this goal of choosing a single metric is important.

The goal of choosing a single metric is important as you are able to focus on one thing completely until you reach mastery or accomplishment.

2. How the exercise impacted you?

Despite that I have little imagination; this exercise reminded me to focus on what matters to me the most and see what I would like people to remember about me. It further motivated me to keep on doing things that are important to me the best I can and to spread kindness and joy around me.

The key metric I am hoping to help move is building a positive community. It is important to choose a single metric to work toward because it makes sure we are doing everything we can to be the very best when it comes to that aspect. You want to set out to accomplish whatever it is youre doing within that metric and to not get distracted along the way.

What I imagine people telling me after I go is that I was a strong-willed, kind-hearted person who always did what was right by him and others... Something within those lines :)
