Course 3: PL 102 - One Key Metric (Discussion 5)

GlenM August 26th, 2020

We've been talking about denial and distraction in this course. It is pretty easy to get knocked off track in life. One way to stay on track is to have a core metric that guides you. If you have a north star that you are working towards, then you know how well you are doing. It is harder to be in denial or to participate in activities that are less helpful in meeting that goal. Â

There are 2 parts to this discussion. Â

1. Work with your team or mentor and identify the key metric you are hoping to help move. Post daily (or the cadence that makes sense) in the  3 key things thread to highlight what you are doing to help us move 7 Cups forward. Please post here why this goal of choosing a single metric is important. Think of how this is important in your professional life, but also how this can help you personally as well. Â

2. (TW: themes that deal with death) Read chapter 12 and do the exercise where you imagine it is the end of your life. If comfortable, post what you imagine people saying to you at the conclusion of the exercise. If not comfortable, then please share how the exercise impacted you. What you imagine them telling you is your compass. If you are acting in a way that is consistent with what they are saying, then it is very likely that you will end up living a meaningful life. Remember to listen to and follow this compass so as not to be distracted by the clock. Â

1. done! I think its important because it allows us to focus our energy on one thing at a time.

2. I am super close to my friends and I can see them talking about all the good times we had together. Since the pandemic started, I've made it a point to always check in our my friends who live away from home since life is, sadly, unpredictable.

~ Posted in 3 Key Things thread. A single metric helps with focusing on our primary goal - what do I want from this LDP course, or this leadership role. This single metric will help in gauging my growth abd alignment with this goal, accordingly. My key metric would be to improve the listener quality and skill so that the community is safer and more supportive.

~ Not ready to share yet. But exercise done. It impacted me by helping me learn where I am currently compared to how i wanna end up being like at the end of my life.

1. It is important to have a single metric to guide you. For example, for me, it is meaning that impacts my personal and professional life, it can even be materialistic gains, which can help you reach your goal. The metric is essential to keep us driven and show us a path in times of confusion.

2. I would like to share about how it impacted me. It made me smile. It is not the first time that I thought about this. In fact, I often do and I feel like I am on track with what I am doing. In my imagination, people share how much I have impacted their lives, chose to learn from every experience and how I was full of life.

Identify the key metric you are hoping to help move.

I always try to live by one principle, to 'be kind, and learn as much as I can'. I think this would be my key metric!

Why is this goal of choosing a single metric is important?

Choosing a key metric is important because it helps us stay on track. It is easy to get distracted, but it will help us focus on what is truly important.

Read chapter 12 and do the exercise where you imagine it is the end of your life. If comfortable, share what you imagine people saying to you at the conclusion of the exercise. If not comfortable, then please share how the exercise impacted you.

This exercise really helped me understand what is important to me and what I believe in. I realized that one of my main aims in life is to spread as much kindness as I can (even if it is little!), and to always remain curious about the world.

1. It's clear that we may face some challenges that cause stress and may bring us close to burnout. A metric that I try to follow, is to try to be consistent and set a schedule to do a little every day. When I start feeling down and stressed, I try to remember why I'm here, that I have been through challenging times that I needed support and I want to offer that to others, so this keeps me motivated.

2. The exercise was really interesting. It is really challenging to think about what my beloved ones think of me as I’m always afraid of disappointing them. It has definitely helped me clear what I really find important in life. I have a feeling that at the end of our lives, the things that seem really important are the things that we do for others. No matter how much we have travelled or how much money we’ve gained or in how many parties we’ve been. These things don’t seem to be able to give us a full life. I really believe that it’s important to spend time with our beloved ones, to do our best to feel capable, independent and strong through growing every day and being able to help others and to remember that the important people in our lives may be people that are no longer present, or that we don’t know their names, or that we met for a very short time but they have taught us lessons and gave us memories and this makes them forever important and people that we should never forget.

Why is one key metric important?

It gives you the space to focus and give your best on one thing! If you are trying to do 80 different key things at once, you work could start to become lesser in value, and you will become burnt out and stressed.

How did the exercise impact you?

It kind of made me take a step back and realize what is important. At my funeral, nobody is going to talk about the fact that I said some joke that nobody laughed at 40 years ago, or I failed that one math test. It made me think about what is important, I loved it!

I have been to 3 key things thread a lot but not regularly as I usually forget to do things in regular basis XD

It really is important to know where you wanna go to, signs are really useful not to get lost while you are on the road but what writes on a sign is only where it would take you, so you gotta know the location you wanna end up at to be able to choose a direction

(I usually have a serious problem in choosing a single metric or a most important goal, I try to do everything in perfection which divides my time and energy to so many places and usually the percent of time and energy that each task gets isn’t enough to do it in a perfect way)

Which I know is a mistake and am trying to work on getting it fixed but guess it will take some time to change a thing you’ve been doing for years

2. Read chapter 12 and do the exercise where you imagine it is the end of your life. If comfortable, post what you imagine people saying to you at the conclusion of the exercise. If I was asked the same question 5 years ago I’d say I wanna be the smart girl, I want my family to tell everyone proudly in tears about my scientific accomplishments, I wanted my friends to tell everyone how I was so focused on my job all week and how I turned out to be not the serious no sense of humor girl but a fun let’s see some adrenalin kind of person in the weekends

then few things happened in my life, a big loss that brought a lot of if only I could go backs, meeting my best friend who gave me a new insight about many things, also due to problems I was facing in personal life I had a huge decrease In my school grades and a lot of outdated projects, I managed to fix my grades and get back to my old place with studies later but that 18 months changed me forever, through that loss I learned that there were things that mattered to me much more than pride and popularity, there was love, there was using the seconds, I learned that I need to love my life today as well as planning for tomorrows, I don’t mean forgetting about the future but keeping in mind that there might not be a tomorrow and not forgetting about the day as well… through my struggles and a phase of failure in studies I learned that my value isn’t only about my accomplishments and perfection but about my weaknesses and bad times too, as these are parts of what makes me, me and that there would still be people who love me anyways, if people love me only when I’m on my best, then I’m choosing the wrong people in my life

So now I have a completely different answer, when I die,

I want people to feel my absence, because that means my presence meant something to them…

I want them to remember me as someone who loved them as who they were

Someone who would wipe away tears and never go out of hugs

Who would laugh with them to the point everyone would think they are completely insane

As the crazy girl

I want them to be able to make a highlight of moments they had with me in their head and I know it is impossible to be the ever great person, I want that highlight, to be like a movie with good and bad scenes but a happy end kind of movie as well…

And last but not least I want them to be able to move on, to be able to tell each other that she wouldn’t want you to stay sad and lose the moments of your life

@GlenM

I think working on consistency could really help me move.

It is important because it allows you to take on thing at a time and taking your time.

It really helped me get inspired and motivated!

1. Please post here why this goal of choosing a single metric is important. Think of how this is important in your professional life, but also how this can help you personally as well.

My key metric is to be patient and manage the time really well. This is important because it keeps me aligned with my life here on 7 cups and outside. This always helps me reach my ultimate goal and stay focused.

2. Read chapter 12 and do the exercise where you imagine it is the end of your life. If comfortable.....

This exercise has been eye-opening. It makes me want to understand who and what I want to be and that I need to identify what will get me there.
