Course 3, Discussion 1: Service Leadership at 7 Cups
The term Service leadership (based on the philosophy of servant leadership, in which the main goal of the leader is to serve). Sometimes leaders or community members who help with projects receive high praise for their efforts (and they all deserve it) but this is never to take away or undermine the contributions of listeners who fly a little bit more under the radar. How one chooses to spend their volunteer time on 7 Cups is up to them & we love you all the same!
We've long said that if you want to be a mentor, be a mentor, eventually you'll get a badge. These service leadership roles are incredibly important to the functionality of our community. The individuals in these posts do an excellent job helping to keep our community safe and positive. I am very thankful for them.
Service leadership is simply about where you plan to spend your time. To those of you out there who focus 100% on member chats, we LOVE YOU! To those of you out there who focus on community programs, we LOVE YOU TOO! All of these contributions are equally valuable and important. As a collective community, our aim is to honor your contributions, no matter where or how they manifest.
In this vein, my hope is that you will remember 3 key things:
1. Self-care - always! Make sure self-care is baked into your volunteer work here
2. Don't take on more than you are able. If you don't have the bandwidth to do something, you owe it to yourself and the community to say no. It is 100% okay to say no. (And if you are asking someone to help you with a project, please do not get upset if someone has to say no.)
3. Remember that 7 Cups is an ecosystem. Every single contribution matters!
If you'd like to be in a service leadership role, my advice would be:
1. Pay attention to how others are contributing
2. Figure out what gets you excited in the community!
3. Once you have an idea of what gets you excited, dive in! You dont need to have a mentor badge to help out, get involved & start learning.
4. If you're not sure how to get involved, you can chat with a mentor or sign up for listener coaching.
5. Once you feel comfortable with your area of attention, apply for the appropriate mentor track.

Service Leadership is to perform a task as a spearhead by setting the roadmap for your team.
On 7cups, the mentors and other listeners constantly support and follow up to help other listeners grow.

✒️ Question: What do you think of the idea of service leadership? Can you list one example of service leadership you have seen on 7 Cups?
Service leadership means serving and helping others thrive in a community.
There are so many examples on 7 Cups: room supporters and mods in member rooms & listener rooms, forum supporters in forums, academy mentors supporting academy programs and helping trainees, etc.
@charmingFlower8111
I like how you've used the term serving😃... That's an accurate description of service leadership

Question: What do you think of the idea of service leadership?
I think service leadership, unlike dictatorship involves putting oneself in the shoes of the team-members... leading by example. For example, it would be cruel for a leader to expect something that they are not capable of doing from a team member.
Service leadership enables the leader to gain firsthand knowledge on the problems facing the team and can give the team members morale as he/she is putting their needs first.
Can you list one example of service leadership you have seen on 7 Cups?
Mentorship program and I think it qualifies as a service leadership because the mentor puts the needs of the mentee first and helps them develop and perform as highly as possible.

✒️ Question: What do you think of the idea of service leadership? Can you list one example of service leadership you have seen on 7 Cups?
The idea of service leadership at 7 Cups is that it's our listeners, our hosts for our rooms, the people on the forums. Those are all service leadership roles at 7 cups. It's the leader role to serve our members and other listeners.
@KarmaTheRascal well answered.
@FrenchToastClub
Service leadership is exemplified by a leader who prioritizes human and skill development of others rather than profits and power. It is when the motto of the leader is foremost to serve. I feel like this form of leadership is seen in every aspect on 7cups and academy mentors and chat room supporters or even the listeners show it in some sense.
@beyoutofullkalon
Absolutely, well said :D

✒️ Question: What do you think of the idea of service leadership? Can you list one example of service leadership you have seen on 7 Cups?
The idea of leadership is great because is gives the freedom to leaders to naturally integrate into a community and contribute to it. Once example is Mods in the Member and Listener chats who host and lead conversations.
@ItsMrEnigma
Love your example of the Mods for this post :)
@ItsMrEnigma
I like your point about it being a way to start to integrate into the community. That's a great way to put it!

✒️ Question: What do you think of the idea of service leadership? Can you list one example of service leadership you have seen on 7 Cups?
Service leadership is especially giving and sacrificial. Service leadership describes a style of leadership in which the leader is taking the place of a servant position and offering assistance and skills that they acquire.
One example of service leadership I've seen on 7-cups is the standard listener support system itself. These individuals offer themselves as listeners to folks who need it. It is the primary and most important means of service on 7-cups!
@CurrySoup12 Oh yes, I like how you acknowledged the listener role as a leadership role as well!
@CurrySoup12
Yesss spot on:)
@FrenchToastClub I feel like service leadership is infectious, when one person helps another person, it makes them want to help others too! I really appreciate the mentors, coaches and chat/forum moderators. They have helped me and inspired me a lot!

✒️ Question: What do you think of the idea of service leadership? Can you list one example of service leadership you have seen on 7 Cups?
🌹 The overall idea of service leadership is to serve, ie. to offer support understanding and warmth to others. Not to take over but to be fully committed to wellbeing and growth. This can be in various capacities, a Volunteer Listener being a great starting point.
🌹I think Heart4Art made a good comment when they said they felt service leadership is infectious, as when one person helps another, they help others too. I echo their sentiments.
@RainbowRosie
I completely agree with you. This is a great response!
