Course 3, Discussion 1: Service Leadership at 7 Cups

FrenchToast December 5th, 2022
.

The term Service leadership (based on the philosophy of servant leadership, in which the main goal of the leader is to serve). Sometimes leaders or community members who help with projects receive high praise for their efforts (and they all deserve it) but this is never to take away or undermine the contributions of listeners who fly a little bit more under the radar. How one chooses to spend their volunteer time on 7 Cups is up to them & we love you all the same!

We've long said that if you want to be a mentor, be a mentor, eventually you'll get a badge. These service leadership roles are incredibly important to the functionality of our community. The individuals in these posts do an excellent job helping to keep our community safe and positive. I am very thankful for them.

Service leadership is simply about where you plan to spend your time. To those of you out there who focus 100% on member chats, we LOVE YOU! To those of you out there who focus on community programs, we LOVE YOU TOO! All of these contributions are equally valuable and important. As a collective community, our aim is to honor your contributions, no matter where or how they manifest.

In this vein, my hope is that you will remember 3 key things:

1. Self-care - always! Make sure self-care is baked into your volunteer work here

2. Don't take on more than you are able. If you don't have the bandwidth to do something, you owe it to yourself and the community to say no. It is 100% okay to say no. (And if you are asking someone to help you with a project, please do not get upset if someone has to say no.)

3. Remember that 7 Cups is an ecosystem. Every single contribution matters!

If you'd like to be in a service leadership role, my advice would be:

1. Pay attention to how others are contributing

2. Figure out what gets you excited in the community!

3. Once you have an idea of what gets you excited, dive in! You dont need to have a mentor badge to help out, get involved & start learning.

4. If you're not sure how to get involved, you can chat with a mentor or sign up for listener coaching.

5. Once you feel comfortable with your area of attention, apply for the appropriate mentor track.

Question: What do you think of the idea of service leadership? Can you list one example of service leadership you have seen on 7 Cups?

Service leadership is the act of putting others first when it comes to serving. I think the act of service leadership can be both conducive and not good. When it comes to a community, service leading is awesome. You put other people's needs above your own, and often times a community will flourish. But its a double edged sword, putting others needs first can often have a negative affect on the person doing the leading. I think as long as there's a balance service leading is great. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk, it was a pleasure rambling to you <3

oh and one example- definitely room supporters and forum leaders ( there is a better term but im unfamiliar with it) <3

I think all good leadership is service leadership. Leaders are there to serve. We are all working towards a common goal. Everyone is part of it, even members. In the chatrooms, discussions and Sharing Circles we all work together.

I think we should pay more attention to the contributions of those that are less visible. Appreciation goes a long way.

It is especially those with less prominent roles or without roles who are integral to the site working well. Those with "bigger" roles should try to express that frequently.

The main idea of service leadership is to serve others the way, that everything works correctly and everybody will follow the rules. An example of service leadership is the forum and room supporters.

Service leadership is all about helping and serving others.

I could name MANY exemples I seen on 7cups. Mentors, Room Supporters (member and listener rooms), Peers supports, Team leaders for projects (project agents), etc.
They all use their skills to help community first and help people to feel more comfortable on 7cups, work together, encourage and motivate them, achieve a commun goal. Remember everybody role and importance to self care, they are a role model.

Question: What do you think of the idea of service leadership? Can you list one example of servant leadership you have seen on 7 Cups?

Service leadership is about giving service to people through leadership. An example would be Quality Mentorship, helping to enhance the listener's listening skills.

Service Leadership is to perform a task as a spearhead by setting the roadmap for your team.

On 7cups, the mentors and other listeners constantly support and follow up to help other listeners grow.

✒️ Question: What do you think of the idea of service leadership? Can you list one example of service leadership you have seen on 7 Cups?

Service leadership means serving and helping others thrive in a community.

There are so many examples on 7 Cups: room supporters and mods in member rooms & listener rooms, forum supporters in forums, academy mentors supporting academy programs and helping trainees, etc.

Question: What do you think of the idea of service leadership?

I think service leadership, unlike dictatorship involves putting oneself in the shoes of the team-members... leading by example. For example, it would be cruel for a leader to expect something that they are not capable of doing from a team member.

Service leadership enables the leader to gain firsthand knowledge on the problems facing the team and can give the team members morale as he/she is putting their needs first.

Can you list one example of service leadership you have seen on 7 Cups?

Mentorship program and I think it qualifies as a service leadership because the mentor puts the needs of the mentee first and helps them develop and perform as highly as possible.

The idea of service leadership at 7 Cups is that it's our listeners, our hosts for our rooms, the people on the forums. Those are all service leadership roles at 7 cups. It's the leader role to serve our members and other listeners.

Service leadership is exemplified by a leader who prioritizes human and skill development of others rather than profits and power. It is when the motto of the leader is foremost to serve. I feel like this form of leadership is seen in every aspect on 7cups and academy mentors and chat room supporters or even the listeners show it in some sense.

✒️ Question: What do you think of the idea of service leadership? Can you list one example of service leadership you have seen on 7 Cups?

The idea of leadership is great because is gives the freedom to leaders to naturally integrate into a community and contribute to it. Once example is Mods in the Member and Listener chats who host and lead conversations.

✒️ Question: What do you think of the idea of service leadership? Can you list one example of service leadership you have seen on 7 Cups?

Service leadership is especially giving and sacrificial. Service leadership describes a style of leadership in which the leader is taking the place of a servant position and offering assistance and skills that they acquire.

One example of service leadership I've seen on 7-cups is the standard listener support system itself. These individuals offer themselves as listeners to folks who need it. It is the primary and most important means of service on 7-cups!

✒️ Question: What do you think of the idea of service leadership? Can you list one example of service leadership you have seen on 7 Cups?

🌹 The overall idea of service leadership is to serve, ie. to offer support understanding and warmth to others. Not to take over but to be fully committed to wellbeing and growth. This can be in various capacities, a Volunteer Listener being a great starting point.

🌹I think Heart4Art made a good comment when they said they felt service leadership is infectious, as when one person helps another, they help others too. I echo their sentiments.

Question: What do you think of the idea of service leadership? Can you list one example of service leadership you have seen on 7 Cups? Service leadership is leadership where the goal is to serve. I see this in forum supporters and community mods and basically everywhere honestly:)

✒️ Question: What do you think of the idea of service leadership? Can you list one example of service leadership you have seen on 7 Cups?

🌟 Isn't every role on 7C an example of service leadership? Whether you're solely a l-l listener, or you're responding/posting check-ins in the forum, or facilitating a guided session in group chat, reassuring another listener after a tough chat, etc, you're performing service leadership. <3 All roles are leadership roles with or without badges.

@FrenchToastClub

Service leadership is an excellent idea. It is a leadership style that focuses on serving the needs of others rather than the needs of the leader. This type of leadership can be incredibly effective, as it helps to build trust, respect, and loyalty among team members.
One example of service leadership I have seen on 7 Cups is when a listener goes above and beyond to help a member. They may spend extra time chatting with the member, providing resources, or connecting them with additional support. This type of service leadership is essential in creating a safe and supportive community for all members.

I love the example you gave, it offers a different perspective I didn't really think about. Listeners without leadership position can also provide service leadership. Also hi hi! I see our paths crossed again haha.

✒️ Question: What do you think of the idea of service leadership? Can you list one example of service leadership you have seen on 7 Cups?

Service leadership is defined as when someone has the heart to serve, has the courage to engage, and answers the call to lead. I think the idea of service leadership is pretty great because it would be fulfilling work for those involved and help better the community overall.

An example of service leadership I’ve seen on 7 Cups would be when people take on new roles that suit them to better serve others. Leadership position break down can be found here: <click me>
