Course 1, Discussion 4: System vs Goals
Hello Leadership Crew!
Welcome to our 4th discussion in this first course. In today's discussion, we will be talking about systems vs. goals.
To start, please read this post here and watch this video.
The basic argument here is that having a system is better than having a goal. A system is a way of behaving that helps you move towards accomplishing something. A goal is usually and end state that happens after you have accomplished something. I think eating healthy is a good example. A goal might be to lose 10 pounds. In this case, you feel kind of bad about yourself until you hit that goal; and then, once you hit it, you kind of lose the purpose because the goal has been reached. If you relapse and gain wait again, then you fall back into feeling bad about yourself again. Contrast this with a system of eating healthy.
A system might include things like: having a big glass of water prior to each meal; eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, and nuts; not eating after 9pm; and/or doing some level of intermittent fasting. You wouldn't integrate all of these new healthy eating behaviors at once. Instead, you'd gradually introduce one and then another and then another over whatever period of time makes sense. The system enables you to continuously get healthier and healthier. You will eventually reach the goal, but it'll be the byproduct of eating healthy.
This also has implications for 7 Cups as well. We might have goals of having a certain amount of group support messages or 1:1 messages. Those are fine goals to have, but we mostly want to create a system of support where people care for one another and then the natural result is an increased number of messages.

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed? Woah! I have been working on several skills this year. My key system which I am continuously working on is communication. I practice communication by being a mental health advocate, through participation in a public speaking organization, and by speaking in my numerous language classes. I will continue to improve on this skill this year. One skill that I would like to improve is emotional balance. I am also working towards this system by participating in mindfulness exercises, by being active in my meditation and through consistent therapy. ✨

One of the key systems that I have recently set up is to have a better schedule and find a balance between my schoolwork and other stuff. I have tried to start it with a weekly schedule and hope I can keep the system going as I stick to it.

1. Set a daily or weekly schedule during the weekend.
2. Try to stick with my schedule but be flexible at the same time because you never know something could happen.
3. Take some breaks at the same time too.

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
I struggle with maintaining accountability, both for myself and others. I tend to avoid setting firm boundaries and can be too lenient in enforcing them. Additionally, I'm susceptible to burnout.
✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
- Recently, I've been reflecting on and outlining specific boundaries. For instance, I've come to realize the importance of setting a boundary regarding the behavior of intoxicated individuals, especially when their actions make me uncomfortable.
- I'm considering seeking psychological support to prevent burnout. Growing up, mental health wasn't widely acknowledged in my culture, and I have a tendency to believe I can handle everything on my own.
- Creating checklists is something I'm working on. In the past, I've struggled with this as I often end up ignoring the checklist. I believe the issue lies in not always making a physical checklist that I can tick off, and sometimes not breaking down tasks enough to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
Definitely one with studying, trying to be effective and also consistent,
✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
Checking in with myself, holding myself accountable, trying to be healthy in other areas of my life.
@gloomySunshine4673
Great ideas on how to address your studies. Checking in with yourself is a great idea. Being able to know what you need and how you are doing is important. Accountability - I put that as well for myself. I also love that you put trying to be healthy in other areas of your life. That's a great step. Thanks for sharing these. It has made me think, particularly your last one.

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
Taking time at the end of the day to gather my papers and put them in their place rather than just stacking them so I have to sort through them each morning when I need them again. If I would take those extra 5 minutes to sort them and put them in their place, I could easily know exactly where what paper is and just reach for it when I need it next. So I think this would be closing down the work day in a ritualized and organized fashion.
✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
I can have a specific spot for the papers I need to sort out and place.
I can set a time that they need to be sorted by, such as an alarm clock.
I can set a personal boundary limiting what happens next unless that task is done first.
I also can be accountable to my sister that it is done until it becomes a solid habit.
@KristenHR
Setting up a daily routine to organize your papers is an awesome idea! By giving everything a specific spot and setting a time to sort them, you’ll save yourself so much hassle in the mornings. Being accountable to your sister is a smart move too. You’ve got this—keep up the great work!
