Course 1, Discussion 4: System vs Goals
Hello Leadership Crew!
Welcome to our 4th discussion in this first course. In today's discussion, we will be talking about systems vs. goals.
To start, please read this post here and watch this video.
The basic argument here is that having a system is better than having a goal. A system is a way of behaving that helps you move towards accomplishing something. A goal is usually and end state that happens after you have accomplished something. I think eating healthy is a good example. A goal might be to lose 10 pounds. In this case, you feel kind of bad about yourself until you hit that goal; and then, once you hit it, you kind of lose the purpose because the goal has been reached. If you relapse and gain wait again, then you fall back into feeling bad about yourself again. Contrast this with a system of eating healthy.
A system might include things like: having a big glass of water prior to each meal; eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, and nuts; not eating after 9pm; and/or doing some level of intermittent fasting. You wouldn't integrate all of these new healthy eating behaviors at once. Instead, you'd gradually introduce one and then another and then another over whatever period of time makes sense. The system enables you to continuously get healthier and healthier. You will eventually reach the goal, but it'll be the byproduct of eating healthy.
This also has implications for 7 Cups as well. We might have goals of having a certain amount of group support messages or 1:1 messages. Those are fine goals to have, but we mostly want to create a system of support where people care for one another and then the natural result is an increased number of messages.

I'd like to share a personal story on how I changed my attitude towards weight loss, physical appearance and health in general. There was a period in time when I used to believe losing a set amount of kgs would make me healthy (if am being extremely honest, "considered beautiful") sigh... but it was after multiple trials and errors, mental and physical breakdowns, and some motivational messages did I create my own healthy meals that I not only enjoyed to the fullest but also felt fullfilled both mentally as well as physically. Maybe it was because of the rush of oxygen that made me feel alive, the ability to run on command without breaking a sweat or panting after a few strides for air, the sleep that overcame me the second I hit the bed and entered a zone of zen; not only did I start loving myself more, I actually started seeing things in a new light, one of it is being healthy takes a huge priority over physical appearance (you dont have to look a certain way to be healthy!), similarly losing weight has no effect if a balanced, healthy diet and lifestyle isn't followed to maintain your health. This right here is based on the principle of following a system not just hitting a red target only to lose it all and start over from scratch!
What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
One of the areas I'd like to succeed in life would be, in my career. The key system that I'd have to set in order to see progress would be is to develop my hard as well as soft skills and knowledge, spot opportunities, grab on to it and grow from there, sharpening myself along the way.
What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
One of my major takeaway from the topic covered in this course is that consistency plays a huge role in maintaining the system which can transform into a life-long commitment. This is something I had learned in the past.
Some of the behaviors I can implement towards the establishment and maintainence of the system would be as follows:
1. Look out for, enroll and actively participate in courses that helps me upskill in areas beneficial for overall advancements.
2. Get in touch with mentors and seek guidance wherever required.
3. Develop a supportive network of friends and colleagues with shared views and beliefs who help each other to thrive in their established system.
@Alambo905
Thank you for sharing your vulnerability with your weight-loss journey. I think it's great that you were able to catch onto the importance of maintaining your systems. I hope you succeed in your future endeavors, especially your career as it seems like it's something you want to focus on next. 💕

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
Currently, I am in university- my goal would be to graduate but the system I have would assist me in graduating with (hopefully) a good grade. Ie. trying out different studying techniques until I find the one that's right for me or even just getting in the habit of doing a little everyday rather than cramming last minute the day before the exam.
✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
Start slowly. If it's a big change, do it in small increments so that it eases you in.
Continuity. Remember to hold yourself accountable but also it's ok to take days off. But once recovered to continue (at your own pace) rather than just forgetting about it.
(possibly): peer support. If there are peers that are also interested in setting up the same system, you could always get them involved together such that you hold each other accountable ( we called it positive peer pressure hahahaha).
(all of those i listed was in the context of revising for exams)

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
I have been struggling to do good in both my studies and as a volunteer. So, the key system I need to work on is creating a balance between my studies and volunteer work, so they won't intersect each other and I will ace both of these.
✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
The behaviours that can help me with my journey are:
1. Being proactive.
2. Scheduling and manging time for each activity, also taking breaks whenever needed.
3. Taking little steps at time but also trying many things so I would be able to enjoy my whole time and would have many experiences.
@KindleMissie
I find managing time to be difficult for me. These are really great ideas!

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
A Key system I would like to develop is to stop focusing on being the best at work I have and focus on ways to improve my contributions towards the work I already have. In terms of a system I would like to develop a system where I can contribute more to work I already have my planning realistic time slots and allocating a proper time of day to focus on these tasks to ensure I spend a proper amount of time on each task and not try to do everything at once and mess stuff up
✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
I will plan my schedule more accurately to allow myself to focus on a task instead of taking on many tasks at one point. And I can do this my listing down a time frame for each task and sticking to these time frames
I want to take some time in taking care of my health and taking brakes more gradually to better improve my own mental health and understand my limitations to allow myself to work more efficiently and be more focused on my work.
i want to focus more on my health by eating a more balanced diet getting enough exercise and drinking water and maintain my overall health as I believe that this would allow me to focus and perform better on my duties and generally have a positive impact on my mental health
@radiantUnicorn3506
nice job 😊
