What's your best life lesson?

tommy November 22nd, 2023

Happy Wisdom Wednesday!

Life is busy and we are constantly figuring out ways to improve ourselves. Arguably, the more experience we have the more wise we become. They say experience is the best teacher!

What is a life lesson that you have learned through personal experience?

This thread is part of our Cupsgiving event! Find out other ways you can get involved here.

@emma1229

SH was something that happened to other people. Until it happened to me.

@tommy what I think and do creates a seed that eventually sprouts up and grows into a tree. Better watch out for what I plant!

I’m considered an oldie here so I have quite a few through life’s experiences.

But one would be cherish and love those that cherish and love you. Treat the ones you love well and don’t take them for granted.

And another important one is to take care of your own self. And Learn to prioritize what & who’s important in your life and not waste time with the things that don’t or shouldn’t matter as much. Maintain your own well-being & sanity. If something costs you your peace, then it’s way too expensive!

* What is a life lesson that you have learned through personal experience?

- Always be thankful for what you have, because as soon as its gone you will extremely miss it.

- you only know what you have when its gone.

- Even when your in a fight (often with family), always make sure to make it up as the next day is never garunteed.

- It's hard to achieve succes without failure

Throughout my school experiences, I have greeted myself with a sense of deep hatred, resentment, and shame for not scoring the highest marks. I was highly interested in delving into knowledge and understanding the world around me. However, I did not quite acknowledge that the world did not necessarily revolve around my grades. I believed them to be the fundamental elements of my personality and future. Once they started to decline due to stress-related factors and my fear of people's perceptions, I realized that such perfectionism would have disappointed me if I had the chance to interview myself. I would get frustrated with my perfect, bigger picture of everything and embarrassed by my belief that grades defined my accomplishments and challenges. It felt like a drudgery attempting to expand my narrow-minded perspective. Over time, however, I started feeling a weight lift off my shoulders. Somehow, it activated my deepest sense of accomplishment and led me to a true understanding of my value. Little did I know, it wasn't about how bumpy my road was, but about the resilience and growth that I experienced along the way. ꨄ︎

@crypticwhisperss1 Nicely written. I have a similar story with perfectionism and it eventually driving me crazy in everything I did. I was successful academically but like you suffered a lot of mental pressure, much of which I now realize I put on myself or at least significantly added to. I hope this site will help me realize even more things through posts like yours. Thank you.

the best life lesson i ever received was, "education is the lightest toolbox. once you have it, you can take it with you anywhere and get a job!" i received this life lesson from my dad, and he was right.

Listen to your gut. If you feel that something is not quite right, you're likely correct.

I listened to what others told ne about me for too long.

@tommy that nobody cares, and if they so care, it's only because they find it beneficial to them.

that we shouldn't get too attached to somebody, because it can be very painful in the end

plumBeechwood7549 November 26th, 2023

To remain present. And I have learnt this the very hard way. I've either always been stuck in the past, or I have stressed about the future. It took me a long time to practice to stay present and understand how precious it is.

@plumBeechwood7549 how were you able to do this in the end. I too have problems with this and would like to get better at it.

@diplomaticNest2868 it takes time and coping resources. At first, it was understanding what I have vs what only exists in my mind... Mindfulness helped me a lot. Grounding exercises and acceptance. I used to only write one good thing for the day. That way, in my dark times I would only focus on that one good thing. It's not foolproof, but it helped..
