Course 3, Discussion 2: Accepting and Providing Feedback

Some reasons why accepting feedback is important:

  • It helps us improve our craft/skills/ourselves

  • We become aware of our own short comings.

  • We can learn how others may perceive us.

Reasons why it can be challenging to hear constructive feedback:

  • We might associate it with who we are as a whole.

  • We may think the person giving it has lost respect for us.

  • It can hurt our ego.

The choice is yours! Are you willing to deal with discomfort for your greater good? If so then constructive feedback is an essential tool you must utilize.

Now let's see how to give feedback!

Steps to give useful feedback:

  • Sandwich it between genuine positive feedback.

  • Don’t do it too often. Remember a person can only accept so much constructive feedback before it drains them. Use it sparingly.

  • Ask yourself what you are communicating is beneficial to the person or your own personal preference. Only provide feedback if it will help the person.

Hey! I wanted to thank you for your great work and your immediate responds to anyone reaching you. I also wanted to bring to your attention that some of your tasks are are not completed and you didn't reach out for help. So I wanted to know if everything is going alright. Thanks for your dedication for the program. Keep inspiring people.

Hi Coffee,

I am so thankful that you are on our team. You, re empathy and compassion for others is wonderful. I really appreciate all that you do at 7 Cups. I'd like to mention the task you were given about three weeks ago which has no been completed. I was wondering if there is something I don't know about that would explain why this task remains incompleted since you are always so punctual. I would appreciate hearing from you regarding this unfinished task. I appreciate everything you do for others at 7 Cups. I look forward to hearing from you.

Frustrated by missing a couple of type-o's. I need to triple check my writing/ typing, knowing that my dyslexic issues sometimes cause me to miss writing/typing issues. I'll try harder to catch more of my mistakes and type-o's.

Hey CoffeePerson198, I hope you are you are ok. You are doing a great job by caring for a lot of people and being empathetic to people, Its truly amazing how quick your response times are. I observed that you are not assigned the task of 3 weeks and I wanna know if you're ok?? Please tell me if there's anything you need from me or from anyone in the community but If you could just let me know that would be great, and don't forget to take care of yourself.

Hi Coffee.  I wanted to pop in and just thank you for all that you do.  I've seen you be so empathetic toward other listeners in the Listener Support Room who are struggling, and it's been so great to witness.  Thank you for being such a caring presence there.  

I do want to chat with you about how you get tasks done and your communication around this.  I know that sometimes tasks you've agreed to do don't get done for 3 weeks or more.  You're not in trouble.  I understand that sometimes it can get difficult to get things done for a variety of reasons.  I need you to communicate with me about it, though.  Let's talk and work together to address whatever the issue may be.  What would be a good time to do this?

I know that you're so consistent in responding to members within 24 hours, and that you demonstrate so much respect in always showing up on time.  Your dedication is clear.  I'm betting that a little teamwork could help us behind the scenes.  

Thank you so much for your sevice and I look forward to working more with you!

I want to start off by telling you its really nice to have you in the team :D You are responsive and punctive which are both great traits but i also want to talk with you since ive noticed you havent been communicating lately and havent done your assigned task for 3 weeks so just curious if you want to tell me more about the reasons behind? you are a really empathic person and i believe you arent doing this to hurt anyone so i hope you want to resign this issue with me.

I am, Souris, the team leader for XYZ. I want to commend you for being on time for all of your team meetings, and responding timely to all the notices regarding our meetings. I have noticed that the tasks assigned in the emails haven't been completed. CoffePerson198, though you are attending the meeting you have not been replying to me with regards the tasks in the meetings. These tasks are important to move on to the next step regarding project LMNOP. You are not communicating well with me, the team leader, in regards to why the tasks aren't complete. I feel as though you may need to work on your communication skills as well as your time management  skills. Lastly, I want to commend you on your kindness and  empathetic gestures toward our guest at the meeting. You've been very punctual with all your tasks and meetings, and your dedication to helping people is truly admirable. However, I noticed that you haven't completed some of your recently assigned tasks, and I haven't heard from you in three weeks. Hi CoffeePerson198! I would like to commend you on always being punctual and responding in under 24 hours. However, I would like to point out some areas that you could improve on. You seem to be struggling to complete assigned tasks for 3 weeks, not communicating with myself as your leader, I would like to why the tasks are not being completed. Please let me know if there is a way, I can assist you. Additionally, I would like to appreciate how it is obvious you are very caring about people and exhibit signs of being empathetic.
