Hello Leadership Crew!

Welcome to our 4th discussion in this first course. In todays discussion, we will be talking about systems vs. goals.

To start, please read this post here  and watch this video.

The basic argument here is that having a system is better than having a goal. A system is a way of behaving that helps you move towards accomplishing something. A goal is usually and end state that happens after you have accomplished something. I think eating healthy is a good example. A goal might be to lose 10 pounds. In this case, you feel kind of bad about yourself until you hit that goal; and then, once you hit it, you kind of lose the purpose because the goal has been reached. If you relapse and gain wait again, then you fall back into feeling bad about yourself again. Contrast this with a system of eating healthy. A system might include things like: having a big glass of water prior to each meal; eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, and nuts; not eating after 9pm; and/or doing some level of intermittent fasting. You wouldnt integrate all of these new healthy eating behaviors at once. Instead, youd gradually introduce one and then another and then another over whatever period of time makes sense. The system enables you to continuously get healthier and healthier. You will eventually reach the goal, but itll be the byproduct of eating healthy.

Another example might be education. I dont really care all that much about grades for my kids. I mostly want them to learn and enjoy learning. We talk about what they learn, we draw things, they make their own educational videos, they explain things to me in their own words etc. I want them to have a system of learning and refining their perspective on things. If they have this system, then having good grades will be a natural result of enjoying learning.

This also has implications for 7 Cups as well. We might have goals of having a certain amount of group support messages or 1:1 messages. Those are fine goals to have, but we mostly want to create a system of support where people care for one another and then the natural result is an increased number of messages. Or, zooming back, think about this leadership development program. We could have an arbitrary goal of training a certain number of new leaders to serve our community; or we can co-create a system - this leadership development program - that helps people become leaders. The natural consequence of the program will be a higher number of trained, competent, and strong leaders that can better support our community. Â

What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed? What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

After fulfilling the requirements of this post, please check out the next post here! You must take part in the brainstorming/activities given in all of these posts to successfully complete the program.

I really agree that we should focus on the systems instead of the goals. We often think that there is just one thing, one moment that can *finally* make us happy, not realizing that joy can be found in the nooks of the journey.

I have a lot of habits and aspirations that I want to fix. One of my most needed systems is positivity. I need to practice positivity to correct my anxious and negative views of others, where I tend to distrust or assume the worst in others. It sometimes causes awful mood swings that are difficult to cope with. My therapist told me that I can't just use positivity as a coping mechanism, and that I need to practice it.

Three behaviours that can help me grow this new system:

  1. taking time every day to note or write down the good actions I notice other people taking
  2. Identifying irrational thoughts and pausing habitually before reacting to things
  3. Reaching out to others instead of pushing them away when I get anxious

What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

The system that I want to set up for my life to help myself succeed is to practice, sketch and pen down ideas every-day, spend 3 hours, before I get to my daily office routine.

What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

- Practice and document

- Get feedback

- Talk about it more

- At least thrown one of my opinion and idea in every call

Hi everyone!

I want to be there firstly for me, so therefore my system is to take care of myself.

Mentally and physically as Well.

My path is to accept myself by gratitude diary and journaling in general. Listinu things What i like about myself and Why i am here. Looking onward to The future and let myself be me. Nobody else.

In those behaviors belong: Mindful living, honesty and kindness to myself, creating and perceiving little things.

Lots of love,

Hana

What is a key system that you need ro set up in your life to help you succeed? What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that need system in your life?

The basic system I need is to organize my time in a way that suits my goals that I set every day. The 3 behaviors I am currently working on are:

1-Go to bed early to wake up early and make it a regular in my life in the long run.

2- Not to waste my time on social media, and this is what I actually started a week ago and I found the good difference.

3- Attempting to reduce my many relationships with the people around me, in my opinion, the many relationships that exist in an individual's life and that need to communicate in a great way because of their large number, this leads to a great loss of time! I do not mean to cut it off, but to set appropriate limits for it, and thus I have enough time to complete my daily tasks and thus reach my goal, which I seek with all the pleasure and comfort of following the system that will continue in the long run.

What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

I found this very helpful and I couldn't agree more. I think it's so true about how we often miss our goals and even when we meet our goals they don't actually change anything afterward. As opposed to systems I think that they give more of a long-lasting change and impact on our lives. I often find myself getting really high goals and then I start to procrastinate and avoid doing the steps to reach my goals. I think that using a system would personally be a better mindset to be in. One system that's really helpful in my life is to practice gratitude.

What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

  • Write in a journal about the things I am grateful for in my life

  • Reach out to friends and check in on them

  • Write thank you and appreciation notes

@Estrellitaa

Yes, there is a difference between goals and systems. To me how I see it, having a system will lead to goals being achieved. So the foundation is in the system and to have this to me, consistency is key and doing it.

I feel like yes I say I am grateful but I don't show it if you know what I mean. I want to show more meaning to the work 'gratitude' in my life. I write, but not every day, so I have to work on this.
