Hello Leadership Crew!

Welcome to our 4th discussion in this first course. In todays discussion, we will be talking about systems vs. goals.

To start, please read this post here  and watch this video.

The basic argument here is that having a system is better than having a goal. A system is a way of behaving that helps you move towards accomplishing something. A goal is usually and end state that happens after you have accomplished something. I think eating healthy is a good example. A goal might be to lose 10 pounds. In this case, you feel kind of bad about yourself until you hit that goal; and then, once you hit it, you kind of lose the purpose because the goal has been reached. If you relapse and gain wait again, then you fall back into feeling bad about yourself again. Contrast this with a system of eating healthy. A system might include things like: having a big glass of water prior to each meal; eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, and nuts; not eating after 9pm; and/or doing some level of intermittent fasting. You wouldnt integrate all of these new healthy eating behaviors at once. Instead, youd gradually introduce one and then another and then another over whatever period of time makes sense. The system enables you to continuously get healthier and healthier. You will eventually reach the goal, but itll be the byproduct of eating healthy.

Another example might be education. I dont really care all that much about grades for my kids. I mostly want them to learn and enjoy learning. We talk about what they learn, we draw things, they make their own educational videos, they explain things to me in their own words etc. I want them to have a system of learning and refining their perspective on things. If they have this system, then having good grades will be a natural result of enjoying learning.

This also has implications for 7 Cups as well. We might have goals of having a certain amount of group support messages or 1:1 messages. Those are fine goals to have, but we mostly want to create a system of support where people care for one another and then the natural result is an increased number of messages. Or, zooming back, think about this leadership development program. We could have an arbitrary goal of training a certain number of new leaders to serve our community; or we can co-create a system - this leadership development program - that helps people become leaders. The natural consequence of the program will be a higher number of trained, competent, and strong leaders that can better support our community. Â

What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed? What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

After fulfilling the requirements of this post, please check out the next post here! You must take part in the brainstorming/activities given in all of these posts to successfully complete the program.

1. What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

The key system I need to set up in my life is to not get too stressed while I am on the path toward achieving my goals. I tend to self-sabotage and self-criticize everything about me when things don't go the way I want it to. I get hung up on this even when I know I shouldn't and just be proud that I am making some progress.

2. What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

1. Take breaks when needed.

2. Prioritize self-care.

3. Talk to people.

1. What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

The key system I need to set up in my life to help me succeed is to keep doing my yoga practice and meditation. To be able to pray the rosary which is a part of my faith. And to let my parent know that I am their for them. Having a balance in my life will help me get further in my goals.

2. What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

One, remember self-care.

Two, find time to unwind and watch an Asian drama because I enjoy reading subtitles and the soft music.

Three, let my parent and friends know they are valued.

What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

The key system that I need to set up is to put in my life and in my head that I can sure do good things for other people but I also can and must do things for myself too. Thinking about my well being, my healthy, my little princess that have just born, thinking about this life that have been gave to me to be the most amazing mom and that was most amazing thing that ever happened to me.

What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

Think about the well being for my child, improve myself, my anxiety , my emotions , how to handle when things gets the way I don't expect.

Do the best that I can to deal with situations that I do not like.

Be more communicative, sociable, extrovert and patient .

What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

Wow first off, I want to say that this discussion opened my eyes about goals vs systems. I couldn't agree more. In reflecting on my own goals vs systems, I feel I need to set up a system for myself is to confront more, avoid less. Interestingly enough, I tend to have big goals in mind, and when nervously waiting or approaching steps to a goal, I will often avoid/procrastinate because I am afraid I won't "succeed" by reaching the goal.

What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

1. First off, I think being more organized and setting deadlines for myself in necessary. I tend to have a deadline in mind that is not strict, which means that I usually push it back when I get anxious... which is not good. I need to be more stern with myself and be a leader TO myself.

2. I think regularly researching is important. I think even when waiting for the next step and feeling like there's nothing you could do meanwhile, continuing to research and maybe look up more resources is always helpful. Even if you think you are done, there are always other ways you can improve and adopting information is never a bad thing.

3. Lastly, being more open and discussing with others. I tend to keep worries to myself which often makes it fester and make it stronger. I am quite a hypocrite in this realm since I always tell my friends and members on 7Cups its better to open up and put it out there than let it bottle up. I often think if someone is not in the same situation as me, they will not care to understand or hear what I have to say, but this isn't true. I need to start sharing negative thoughts/feelings with others in the hope they will be sympathetic and compassionate instead of letting it get to me.

= More like systems that lead to a better lifestyle, eat better, workout and study.

Behaviors: Stick to the schedules I make but never follow.

Start with one habit at a time.

LEAVE MY PHONE :D

@Listeningstars sometimes having breaks from your phone really helps to achieve these health goals ! it can really help you focus better and it's good to just take a step away and take a breath :)

CaringEzra February 5th, 2022

Leaving your phone turn off can definitely be helpful for your mental health

What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

I feel like I need a system in place for my studying (motivation) as I feel like I am only aiming for goals.

What are 3 behaviours you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

1. Find a time in the day, where I have the most motivation to study.

2. To have regular breaks

3. To not aim for doing too much work, do as much as I can manage.

@Kindwords2000 taking breaks and not aiming to do too much work really helps with studying motivation :) if you don't do these things, you'll get drained very easily !

@nlpinspiration i agree that positive thinking really helps to attract clients ! even when things aren't looking so great at some point and you don't attract to many one day, it's important to stay optimistic :)

nessa104 February 11th, 2022
