The first 3 conversations helped us set the foundation for this discussion. The idea that the problem is the path or the obstacle is the way comes from the Stoics. If interested, I also recommend this book as a good overview of stoic thinking. I think there is a tremendous amount of wisdom in these ancient ideas. I'm glad to see much of it resurfacing now. ÃÃÂ

This disucssion is the most important discussion in this course. This is the core insight to learn for your own personal and professional development as well as the key insight that will continue to help us grow and evolve at 7 Cups. Please really take your time to think through these ideas. They matter and they are meaningful. These ideas can help change the trajectory of your life.

Here are the questions:

1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread. ÃÃÂ

2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video. ÃÃÂ

1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread.

Problems help up break out of denial and distraction, they will keep coming back and keep coming back until we face them and rather than simply being annoying, this can be helpful. 2) Problems can actually be lessons and help us by teaching us something. 3) We do not have to be alone to face our problems.

2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.

Perception: how we decide to see things, what story we tell ourselves about an event

Action: what we actually do about the problem

Will: understanding both ourselves and the fact that there are things much bigger than us

What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread.

1. The only way to break free from denial and distraction system is to face the problem and learn to truly care for people

2. We do not grow when things are going well, when things are challenging. This reminds me of a quote.

“A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor” - F.D. Roosevelt

3. Problems teach us to ask for help to be able to better understand and care for others

Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.

3 Key Components to Face Life Problems:

Perception: what we can control is our thoughts on how we see problems/ things that will affect our moods and reactions.

Action: consider our options and take action to tackle the problem with everything we have in ourselves.

Will: have endurance and resilience because sometimes it takes time.

1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread.

1) Problems have disguised value and are actually very helpful and should be treasured.

2) Problems help us grow. They break down our denial, free us from the distraction systems, teach us to ask for help, help us level up and also teach us how to authentically care for other people.

3) We grow when we face and work through our problems. When we focus on our problems, open to them, accept them and solve them, we are rewarded with new insight and growth

2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.

1) Perception: How we see the problem. The way we look at the problems makes an impact, if we take problems in a negative way, then we won’t be able to grow but if look at them positively then it will help us grow and learn.

2) Action: To do something about our problems; to respond to it with creativity, persistence and ingenuity with using something that we have with the best of our ability.

3) Will: Looking at the part of the things that we don't control; building our inner strength and understanding that things are much bigger than us.

Breaking free is about facing your problems and being compassionate towards others.

Denial and Distraction work together to use up your internal resources to cope with problems.

Problems can teach us, just as emotions can. Be curious about your problems and emotions. They can teach you to ask for help, decrease your denial, help you break out of distraction systems and level up, and ultimately,; to care for others.

2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.

Obstacles are the way through life because they prompt us to act and consequently, we get over the hurdle. We need to focus on the present moment.

Stoicism: we can only control our actions (circle of influence) in response to what happens to us (circle of concern). Every problem you face is a way to move forward - it’s an opportunity for growth.

The things that we think are so bad really aren’t. We can change our attitude towards them and hence our actions. Consequently our emotions can change too. Your internal narrative impacts your success in life.

Amor Fait: embrace fate because we can learn from every opportunity. Perception, leads to action which leads to a will to keep going

1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread.

1) Problems are gifts that can help you advance the self. Hidden value can be hidden in problems and they can help you not only move forward but become a better person as a whole by making you stronger.

2) Problems encourage you to ask for help. They teach you about how important community, humanity and connection are. They teach you how important working with and leaning on others is so vital. This can make relationships better, the community stronger, and an individual happier and healthier.

3) Problems force us out of denial and distraction systems we design to not have to face them. Being thrust into have to face our problems makes us stronger and help us move forward in life as we tackle one at a time.

2. Watch this overviewvideoby Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.

1) Perception is about how one views the world, themselves and others. It could be an opportunity or devastation, and it all comes down to ones perception and thoughts about it. One has the powwer to alter their perception at any given time.

2) Action is what we do and how we react to our problems and situations. Once we realize what we must do and alter our perception in the direction of healing and facing head on, one can take action to improve their lives and problems.

3) Will involves building an inner strength and looking at the things that we cannot control, accepting them, and then working through them. It's about embracing that we cannot control or change everything, and that that is okay.

What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you.

That a problem is not going to magically go away until you deal with it.

That asking for help is a good thing. Getting help from people help us achieve our goals and it helps us personally go. It also makes us more approachable as we are to be someone that actually will listen to advice.

Finally that we really do grow from asking for help, talking about stuff that’s going on to others and listening really does a lot for us.

Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video

Perception- How we see things in our world and how we see others

Action- Our response to the situation and remembering that every action has a reaction, this can be a good reaction or a be reaction

Will- The things that we can control and also the thing that we cannot. Understanding which is which will save time and stress in the long run.

@GlenM

- What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you?

1. Whenever we face a problem, trying to get away from it by denying it, ignoring it or even getting distracted by anything would never work because problems force us to face them and truly grow

2. Problems help us become more empathetic towards others, we feel the struggle of facing them that's why we understand that others are going through a similar battle as us and we eventually start to relate to them as well as care for them

3. Problems teach us to ask for help, whenever we ignore them or try to deal with a problem completely by ourselves and block everyone else out, this might not work for all our problems. Sometimes when we do that, we start struggling on our own but the second we ask for help, we understand that it's totally fine to get people we trust involved.

- In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.

1. Perception: This is how we view the problem, what kind of lens we are wearing while judging a certain problem. We mostly see problems as things we dislike or we blame others, we act like it's something that's out of our control but once we try seeing that we have a choice on how to act towards the problem, this is when we start learning

2. Action: This is how we choose to deal with the problem in front of us. This is the point where we choose either to enjoy the journey or whine till it's over. We sometimes look at the results we want instead of thinking of the paths we will take to get there

3. Will: This is accepting how things are, understand and being wise over things we can't control nor change. We can chose to move on and be ok with everything we have no power over even if it hurts us. We need to have inner strength and believe that this will pass, one way or another and we will be ok with time.

What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread.

What stood out from chapter 4 was that problems will only truly go away and improve if they're faced and overcame. They teach us that it's okay to have problems, we remember how we overcame that problem and will encourages us to be able to do it again if needed. They also aid us in helping others, if you have faced a problem and see others struggling with that problem, it gives you more of a better opportunity to be there for them and to assist them in their problem.

2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.

Perspection - How we see our problems and other aspects of our life. Different perspectives change the actions we take to deal with a problem.

Action - What we do to deal with the problem, this could include changing diet, lifestyle, friendships, relationships, many things can be changed to improve or effect your problem.

Will - Awareness that not everything can be changed and dealt with, that some things can not be controlled and will is the meaning of acceptance of the inevitability of something happening. To not worry about what you cannot do anything about.
