The first 3 conversations helped us set the foundation for this discussion. The idea that the problem is the path or the obstacle is the way comes from the Stoics. If interested, I also recommend this book as a good overview of stoic thinking. I think there is a tremendous amount of wisdom in these ancient ideas. I'm glad to see much of it resurfacing now. ÃÃÂ

This disucssion is the most important discussion in this course. This is the core insight to learn for your own personal and professional development as well as the key insight that will continue to help us grow and evolve at 7 Cups. Please really take your time to think through these ideas. They matter and they are meaningful. These ideas can help change the trajectory of your life.

Here are the questions:

1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread. ÃÃÂ

2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video. ÃÃÂ

Please add the following message to the button of all discussion posts

After fulfilling the requirements of this post, please check out the next post here! You must take part in the brainstorming/activities given in all of these posts to successfully complete the program.

@GlenM The only way - as far as we can tell - is to face your problems and learn to truly care for other people. I totally agree with this line. I feel it is best for us to face our problems to overcome them. The more we try to run away from it, the harder it gets for us in the future. The 5 steps given- Breaking denial, coming out of distraction, asking for help, receiving help and showing care to others is the right process according to me. I feel we can be more empathetic towards people when we ourselves have been through something or can try and step into their shoes. I like how the writer describes the story of Aunt Maggie. All we have to do is face her and come out of the situation faster but trying and avoiding is something we cannot do. I like the story the writer told us about his parent's dreams. How his mother opens the shelf to welcome a friendly man and how his father turns back and runs towards the light. This tells us how we should try and face our fears. I feel 7 cups is one of the best platforms to ask and receive help and show care and compassion to others. I like the way the writer tells us even though we try to distract ourselves from the problem we have, it always stays and the only way for it to disappear is to face it.

Perception- The way we see our problems. If we fear it, we cannot overcome it. But if we see our problem as something we can overcome and face it, it is not something hard or impossible for us to do. Our perception towards the problem matters a lot. It is the way we see things. The more positive outlook we have, the better we can solve it

Action- Action depends on how we want to go about the problem. It is our way of facing the given problem. It depends on us if we want to be brave about it and deal with it, or fear and run away from it. I feel it is best to face it even though it can be really scary for us to face it. Asking for help in that process is alright but in the end all that matters is how we face the given situation.

Will- So many things in life are out of our control. Death, how people react to a given situation, any cause happening in the world. It depends on us how we take it. It can be really hurting for us when things do not go the way we imagine it to go but will is all about that. How we accept things that are not under our control. Having a strong will power helps us to be mentally strong and accept the hard things in life

What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you?

We should never ignore problems, ignoring them allows them to manifest more, we should face things head on

We can help and guide others by dealing with problems rather than ignoring them, this will enable us to help and support ourselves better whilst also enabling us to pass these skills to others, in a similar way of working together as a community to help each other.

As discussed above, by accepting and facing issues, we are also able to improve and develop as people, this changes our whole mindset and unless we deal with issues, we will never see the light at the end of the tunnel, we will be confined forever

Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.

I love these videos with the drawings lol

1) Stoicism - We cannot control what happens to us but we can control how we respond

2) Perception - I agree with his points regarding perception, this can be seen very easily by picturing something happening in text form, we may read and understand something as negative or insulting, but the intentions of it may be positive, but how we perceive what we read is how we will likely take it, ultimately, this can also be the same in the real face-to-face world, people have laughed and joked whilst calling me "gay", and they see this as a "joke", I perceive it to be an insult for reasons known to myself, so we need to perceive things in the right ways and if we are unsure, clarify intentions and don't be scared to challenge.

3) Perception, Action, Will - Very interesting how these are discussed, and how well they interlink together.

1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread.

1) Problems have disguised value by helping us grow.

2) Problems teach us to open up and care for other people.

3) Problems break us out of distraction systems because they stay there until they are dealt with.

2. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.

1) Perception: How we see the situation and then you can deal with it based on how you perceive it

2) Action: Our actions have effects and consequences

3) Will: We can accept things out of our control and manage what we can control

1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stood out to you?

= I like the Aunt Maggie metaphor about the different kinds of people and how they deal with problems. The one who ignores her, the one who is nice but also is very assertive to her and their time together, and the enlightened one.

2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book The Obstacle is the Way. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.

= The three are as follows:

Perception: Objective judgment - no emotions, just facts and logic, because it is what you make of it

Action: Unselfish action - it's not all about you; respond by using what you have to the best of your ability

Will: Willing acceptance - that there are things you can't change because they are bigger than us, and yet despite this, we dedicate ourselves to it <3 this last part is magical <3
