The first 3 conversations helped us set the foundation for this discussion. The idea that the problem is the path or the obstacle is the way comes from the Stoics. If interested, I also recommend this book as a good overview of stoic thinking. I think there is a tremendous amount of wisdom in these ancient ideas. I'm glad to see much of it resurfacing now. ÃÃÂ
This disucssion is the most important discussion in this course. This is the core insight to learn for your own personal and professional development as well as the key insight that will continue to help us grow and evolve at 7 Cups. Please really take your time to think through these ideas. They matter and they are meaningful. These ideas can help change the trajectory of your life.

Q: What are 3 key points from chapter 4 that stand out to you?
A:
- One of the things that standed out to me at the beginning of the chapter was this: “The only way - as far as we can tell - is to face your problems and learn to truly care for other people” I find that this was beautifully said and it quite hitted home for me.
- For me the sentences that were said afterwards also standed out to me, the way it was explained I find beautiful and I save those sentences as I find them really beautiful.
- What also stood out to me was how everything was said and explained, the book and this chapter has a really good wording and it’s just beautifully written.

3: will - this is a part of the problem that we can’t control.

1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread.
1. Problems are actually good and valuable.
2. Not facing our problems doesn't erase them.
3. Problems break down our denial and distraction system and help us grow stronger.
2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
Perception, this is how we see things, whether not accepting our problems or trying to blame someone for it, or in the other hand believing that it is what it is and looking for what we can do next. Which brings us to the second component, Action. Here we can take this problem as an opportunity, and by working with what we have and using our best skills like, creativity and persistence, we can really do something about it, that's the part that we can control. And the last component is Will. Here we just know that there must be things that are out of our control, circumstances that are bigger than us, and accepting these things, understanding our capabilities and mentality.

What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread. ÃÃÂ
-the way we frame our problems: it’s a good reminder for ourselves to realize that a problem is really only a threat to us when we ignore the act of reaching out for help to ourselves and others for solving the problem in the first place. Some are just harder and longer to achieve than others. Some problems come only once and other problems come multiple times and I think that’s a lot of the times where people start to see it more threatening or begin to denial when they see a problem that they think was already solved. So to see it more like an opportunity and seeing it as a sign that there’s still growth and life yet to see it may be easier for us to approach and take that action.
-problems free us from distraction systems: I found this particularly interesting since it makes sense and can even attest to that through my experiences. I’d notice that the more I focused my energy to taking my steps to face my problems the less distractions I really needed and more meaningful those moments were and how much I learned from them. I’d only use some distraction if I wanted to take a day off. Although if there’s a problem I’d think of that I immediately tell myself I can’t do for such reasons such as needing to solve it in only a certain way that I could t do then I’d start to rely on distractions as a clutch so I wouldn’t have that problem in mind or would numb the anxiety around the problem. For instance being worried about work and the tediousness and my insignificance I’d get anxious and then use my phone seeing things like on social media or thinking what else I can do and it make me look bad and I felt worse and leading the bad cycle. So to break it I’d have to shift how I see my work and my impact on it.
-problems show us to be open and care for others: I noticed this mostly when I get feelings that seem to come out of nowhere but when I took the time I’d need for myself I’d go over why I’m having these feelings and run my thoughts and see that whether I think I’m doing something big or small I care about it because I’m taking my time and energy making sure I’m doing it right and helping making something easier for everyone affected in the process. So even though I myself may not always feel like I’m doing a lot it was a good reminder when I felt sad and anxious that I really do want to do good to show I care for people and was something worth recognizing and thriving for.

-perception or what you tell yourself about the actual problem and how you steer this. The way you narrate what the problem is like and how the scenario is and where you fall into that.
-action or what you can actually do with the resources you have at your disposal; how you use the things at your disposal and planning our realistic goals to make them attainable.
-will or the ability to come to terms with date and have the strength love your life as you can despite the uncontrollable events.
Here are the questions:
1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread.
- 1) "The only way as far as we can tell is to face your problems and learn to truly care for other people." I found this to be specifically true for myself in my experience. Joining 7 Cups was the safest place on the internet for me to do this.
2) "Framing is a concept that refers to how an idea is positioned or “framed”. Think of the way you frame a picture. It impacts the way it looks. Our biology and education have framed problems in an inaccurate and bad way. Problems suffer from negative branding." - I've always been aware of what framing is, but reading it in this context helps show the impact that negative branding can have on our entire mindset towards life.
3) "Problems have disguised value. They are actually very helpful and should be treasured. We struggle to see problems as valuable because we are too busy trying to avoid or ignore them." - I couldn't agree with this quote more 👏🏽 In my experience, everything has a lesson and bestows some type of wisdom towards are next steps whether good or challenging.

- This was an incredibly insightful video! Very rewarding to have it as a part of our assignment.
1) Perception: This is how you choose to view your circumstances and the story you tell yourself about the situation
2) Action: How you will choose to respond to the situation
3) Will: Our inner strength towards how we respond and then move forward
@GlenM
One, problems break down denial. As someone who has faced such an effect, I can agree that these problems stomp on your fort wall and crush it into so many pieces, leaving you feeling like you can’t do anything now. Problems are, however, the only thing that made me come out of my fortress and actually do something about it.
Two, problems break you out of distraction systems. Escapism is real. I am particularly the kind of person who likes to escape and hide when Aunt Maggie comes but when we face problems, all those posts, those movies, those overworking fire dies down, thus, letting me actually do what is needed. It’s both hurtful and time-taking, but the end result is hard-earned and actually leaves you feeling that you mean something.
Three, problems teach you to open up and care, from your heart, for other people. This applies to me for if I hadn’t faced those problems back then, I wouldn’t be here on 7 cups or anywhere, really. Being a shut-off person, I thought the world revolved around me but when I came out of my fortress, I realized that this world is made of people like me and thus, if I have found what I needed, I’ll help others find it too.
1. PERCEPTION: The concept of Amor Fati i.e. embracing and loving something even if it’s bad. Also, a step in our perception of the problem
2. ACTION: Marcus Aurelius: Our actions may be impeded, but there is no impeding our intentions or dispositions. Because we can accommodate and adapt. The mind adapts and accommodates to its own purposes the obstacle to our acting. What stands in the way becomes the way.
