The first 3 conversations helped us set the foundation for this discussion. The idea that the problem is the path or the obstacle is the way comes from the Stoics. If interested, I also recommend this book as a good overview of stoic thinking. I think there is a tremendous amount of wisdom in these ancient ideas. I'm glad to see much of it resurfacing now. ÃÃÂ
This disucssion is the most important discussion in this course. This is the core insight to learn for your own personal and professional development as well as the key insight that will continue to help us grow and evolve at 7 Cups. Please really take your time to think through these ideas. They matter and they are meaningful. These ideas can help change the trajectory of your life.

We can use bad habits and bad relationships as something to lean on as a source of stability.
Facing your problems and caring for others is the most healthy way to face your issues.
Problems are valuable and can help us grow.
2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
Perception- You can make a situation worse by how you perceive it. If you see a task as too difficult, you won't be able to do it. If you see it as something you can achieve, you'll do your best to make it happen.
Action- How you actually react to the problem in front of you.
Will- Understanding that certain things are out of your control, and you need to focus on the things you can control

There can be "gold nuggets" in unburying your issues, Thanks Aunt Maggie!
Uncovering your problems, or digging into your "Bag", can help you but ultimately help others too!
Although it may be uncomfortable, even if there's no golden nuggets, it's better in the long run.
2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
What Stands in the way, Becomes the way! So stepping outside of my comfort zone, and dealing with these issues in my life , It can help me tremendously. In other words, The brick wall in front of me, becomes the way. The next chapter in my life, The next obstacle that must be handled. Metaphorically, grabbing resources around me and building or creating a way to get through that wall, and not just digging dirt and covering it up so I can step over it. That will be at that point thrown into the bag, and drug along with me.
As my grandpa told me once, You cannot change what anyone does, but you CAN change how you react. ie: Aunt Maggie. You cannot control that she knocks, or annoys most. But you can change how you react to her actions. Oh hey aunt Maggie, good to see you Rather than UGHHHHH Not again..
Going back to the circles of influence and concern, Putting the time and energy into the things you "can" change, and ultimately making it an opportunity, rather than focusing on what you cannot change, and accepting it as it is.
God, Grant us the serenity of
mind to accept that which cannot be changed; courage to change that
which can be changed, and wisdom to know the one from the other! Psalm 29:11

- Problems help us to recognise that not being infallible is okay
- Problems help us to have a solution-oriented mindset
- Problems make us more resilient
2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
- Perception: "Whether or not you believe you can do it, you're right."
- Action: "Do or don't, there is no try."
- Will: "The only thing different about me is that I'm not afraid to d*e on a treadmill, right? You might have more talent than me, you might be smarter than me, you might be sexier than me, you can be all of those things, you got it on me in nine categories, but if we get on the treadmill together, there's only two ways it can turn out: either you get off first or I'm going to d*e. It's really that simple." (ironically quoted by Will Smith)
Not my own words, but sometimes I think someone else's words can put things more succinctly than I can.

Course 3: PL 102 - Problems (Discussion 4)
1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread. ÃÃÂ
- I can ask for help, it’s not a stigma, only I’m making a problem
- I need to care for people, understand what they are going through
- Facing my issues head on , instead of avoiding it.
2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video. ÃÃÂ
- My perspective is what makes all the difference, it’s up to me to determine if it is a problem or opportunity.
- The only thing I can control is how I react
- If I go into denial, it’ll just lead to failure through repeating past mistakes
@GlenM
This chapter was really important for my journey, so I want to take the time to thank you, Glen, for sharing it with us! It is special 🌈
1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread.
1) What really stood out to me was, how we can get out of denial and distraction. We can always face what is in front of us, no matter how scary it may seem.
2) I learned, that problems can be gifts, and that we can grow so much with every single challenge in our lives.
3) And lastly, what actually got me the most, as it is something where I can see myself very well, is that being alone is not an option. I tend to fight my problems by myself, to prevent others from getting hurt. But by shutting them out, I usually hurt them much more than I would if I just accepted that I don't have to be alone.
2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
To every problem we face, there is an opportunity as well. We choose how to react and respond! We can control our internal strengths.
1. We can perceive every problem that comes up either in a frustrated, or in an accepting way. If we accept it as it is, maybe even just for a moment, it is much easier to move on, or solve the issue.
2. If we use all of our strengths, talents and gifts, we can solve our problem by taking action, without becoming frustrated.
3. When we can't change or solve a problem, we can try to accept it, maybe even enjoy it, depending on the situation.
Thank you, amazing hooman bean, for reading everything until here! It's way too hot at the moment, so here is ice-cream for you! 🍦

Establishing your story through three different points: self, us and now , Building a culture of reciprocity , Spotlighting role models!
Ryan Holiday consolidates his analysis of ancient philosophers’ works on Stoicism into practical insights and tips to overcome obstacles. These are broken down into 3 disciplines ~
• Perception: how you look at your problems; • Action: how to tackle problems in actionable parts; and • Will: how to cultivate and maintain your inner being to conquer problems and difficulties.

1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread. ÃÃÂ
a) Without problems there would not be progress. They are an opportunity for growth and learning.
b) When we experience problems this can lead us to feel more empathy for others.
c) Problems left unnoticed grow until there comes a point where the problem cannot be ignored any longer. Problems push until denial is no longer possible.
2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video. ÃÃÂ
Perception - how we view the world, others and situations including problems.
Action - what steps we will take to address the problem and create a solution
Will - the strength and belief we have to tackle these problems
@gentleFox20
I like that you brought up the aspect that problems grow. I guess we can see problems as a source of energy - if we don't use it to grow, they will...
