The first 3 conversations helped us set the foundation for this discussion. The idea that the problem is the path or the obstacle is the way comes from the Stoics. If interested, I also recommend this book as a good overview of stoic thinking. I think there is a tremendous amount of wisdom in these ancient ideas. I'm glad to see much of it resurfacing now. ÃÃÂ
This disucssion is the most important discussion in this course. This is the core insight to learn for your own personal and professional development as well as the key insight that will continue to help us grow and evolve at 7 Cups. Please really take your time to think through these ideas. They matter and they are meaningful. These ideas can help change the trajectory of your life.

1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you.
- The way in which problems break our denial and let us see reality.
- Problems, like Aunt Maggie, don't go away through distractions. They hang around until they've been dealt with.
- We learn to reach out to others and also help others from the experiences we have had.
2. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
- Perception: It is important that we see problems as an opportunity or a path to be able to grow.
- Action: We need to take steps in order to overcome and take advantage of the obstacles with creativity, resilience and other values.
- Will: We need to be willing to accept that some things are under our control while others are not. And we need to work towards making things better in our circle of influence.
@GlenM
1. Problems break down our denial. They show us that we have to take immediate action to solve the problem, not just pretend that it doesn’t exist.
Problems teach us how to ask for help. When things get hard, they teach us to accept that we’re not perfect, that we can use the help of someone and learn out of it.
Problems teach us how to care for other people. After getting trough a challenging situation, we have the ability to understand how someone that gets through something similar feels and the strength to help them get through it by using our experience.
2. Discipline of Perception: This is how we decide to see a problem. Sometimes people decide to see it as dramatic and catastrophic but sometimes they decide to take it as a fact and use every opportunity that they have to do something about it. A negative bias reduces our chances to solve it while a positive one increases them.
Discipline of Action: It’s the decision to use what we have to do the best we can to solve the problem. In order to achieve that, we need to overcome negativity and focus on the parts of the problem that we can actually affect.
Discipline of the Will: This is about accepting the parts of the problems that we can’t control and that are over our powers. It helps us to get unstuck from this side of the problem, overcome denial, gain our strength, reorganize our thoughts and affect the side of the problem that we can to save the situation.
1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you?
- Although problems are annoying and hard to face, it is important that we do actually face them, because avoiding or denying problems will not make them go away. They will still be there, until we deal with them
- Working through problems is essential for us to grow. It helps us move forward, and realize that we are much stronger than we thought.
- Dealing with and overcoming problems can make us more caring and empathetic. Most people do care, but you can understand and empathize on a much deeper level when you have also experienced pain and worked through your problems.
2. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
- Perception: This is how we look at the problem. It also involves how we react to the problem. We can either see it as unfair and horrible, or we can accept it for what it is, and deal with it
- Action: This involves taking action against the problem with the best of your ability. This is something that we can control about the problem.
- Will: Accepting the things we can’t control, and understanding that many things are bigger than us.

2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.

-Action: How you want to respond to your problem. What are you going to do about it!
-Will: The mental and emotional strength to accept you cannot change anything, but also the drive and the passion to change the things you can.

Problems teach you compassion in a way nothing else does
Problems have the ability of breaking denial, the point of hitting rock bottom as it Is called in AA is an example of when this happens
problems help you grow and learn just like moving to the next level on a video game the game (life) will have the same problem pop up in your way again and again until you get to the point of facing it directly and getting through it
also a thing I really loved about this metaphor is the fact that in a video game by making it through one level and successfully managing to solve the problem you don’t get to a safe haven all of a sudden, growing through each problem you’ll come across to a new probably harder problem but it’s okay as you know you “can” get through all those just like you did with the ones before

To watch and understand what’s the question not only see it from the outside…
To find an answer to the question/problem you identified and bring your answer to life, start taking an action about it
Welcome and accept what happens after, where you don’t get to control just try to accept what life brings to you, it’s like when you are not the captain on a ship, then just enjoy the ride, enjoy how beautiful the ocean is and how the wind goes through your hair, there is a chance of hitting an iceberg and you know it but try to love the ride and accept the chance of hitting the iceberg too
@GlenM
1.How would you define denial in your own words?
denial means trying not to believe facts that you know are true deep inside, cause if you come to the terms of believing sth then you need to face it and as humans we don’t really want to face things that are not so sweet to us…
it’s somehow like having a car accident, getting out of the care taking your belongings and walking away to continue shopping or go seat in a restaurant, in that scenario you know inside that you have a problem but instead of taking that fact and trying to resolve the issue (waiting for police, etc) you are denying it and using shopping or eating as a distraction tho this won’t help you and at the end you need to go back for your car, leaving the accident site might even get you into a bigger problem
2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?
Human brain operates in a really awesome and superior way, putting things that you have already mastered to the unconscious mind to give you space to focus your consciousness on next biggest thing to master
3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?
for me personally it is internet and social media, just open tiktok, youtube or instagram and you can spend the next 4-5 hours watching videos personalized to make sure they will attract you…
in my family I have seen food and novels using as distraction systems as well
