Announcement: Group Mod Challenge
Hello Moderator Team
I’ve got a challenge for you! Are you ready?
- Take a look at the communication styles as shown in the image above. Which four of the styles fit your communication style best? Let us know that in the comments below!
- Find a mod to partner up with to go mod and foster healthy conversation in the chat rooms for half an hour at least 6 times in a two-week span.
- Observe and take notes on the communication approach of your mod partner and the mod partner will be doing the same for you. (Please note that communication styles and approaches can and will vary and that’s alright!)
- Participate in the Group Mod Zone Room and compare your notes and share with fellow mods to learn about each others’ communication styles. Also, share the vibe of the room you both were modding to share in the Mod Room. The vibe of the room here means how was the room environment at the start of joining and when you left. You could share it on a scale of 1-10 where 1 would be “Meh” and 10 as “Awesome”.
Your mod partner can be:
- Any community moderator on shift (just let them know 1-1 before you join as a partner with them on their shift).
- A fellow community-centered chat room moderator of the same community who could be present at the same time as you will be able to participate in the room.
- A global moderator who could be present at the same time as you will be able to participate in the room.
To complete the challenge of visiting and moderating the rooms at least six times in a two-week span, your mod partner can be different if the same mod partner can’t be present. If you have more than one partner, you will simply take notes of different mods' communication styles and approaches and share them with them and fellow moderators in the group mod zone.
Every time you complete one session, drop it in the comments of this thread to log your active participation.
The goal of this challenge:
- Identify your own communication approach in the group dynamics and how it changed/evolved as the situation in the room changed.
- Identify how having a partner with you changed/ helped to foster a supportive and compassionate environment in the chatroom.
- What were the challenges? What surprised you? What type of communication approach works best for you?
At the end of this two-week challenge, you will receive information for the next one! And at the end of the quarter, the top 3 chat room moderators who complete all the challenges successfully will be awarded the most prestigious award: Award-Winning Mod!
Criteria of Award-Winning Mod
- Being passionate about group support chat rooms
- Being compassionate and engaging with the community members
- Being professional and ensure the safety of the room
- Using active listening and de-escalation with all chat participants.
- Being supportive to the fellow chat room moderators and room supports
- Being an open-minded communicator
- Being yourself and having fun while being there in the rooms.
Fun fact! To this day, only 12 chat room moderators have earned this exclusive award! And for extra incentive, every chat room moderator will be awarded 100 cheers per activity they complete.
I am signing up for the challenge and I invite every moderator to accept the challenge too! May we grow together as the best moderators of the community!

Activity #27
Partner: @Amy
Session date: April 20th, 2021
Session time: 2:15pm-2:45pm
Room: Members Community Room
Notes: Thank you so much for co-hosting icebreaker session with me! The session was a lot of fun. I got the feeling that Amy's style is a mix of thinker and relater. During the session, my style was thinker as Amy already mentioned. ^_^
@richuyulin you never stop
@vivelespatates Ahaha you got me there. I'm not someone who would stop at minimum requirement when it's a challenge. ^_^
Partner: @EmmaE
Session date: April 20th, 2021
Session time: 5:15pm-5:45pm
Room: Teen Communtiy Room
Notes: Emma and I had a great time modding! It was actually quite active and we spent our time interacting mainly with members although a few listeners and fellow mods dropped in occasionally! We Both felt like we acted as relators as there were many people sharing stories about their days and we even got a lesson on internet safety curtsy of one of the members in the room. We were lucky to not face any problems!

partner: @Azalea98
session date: april 20, 2021
session time: 5:15-5:45pm
room: TCR
notes: it was a really awesome session! there were quite a few members and some nice conversation going on, so it was great to have some fun, casual conversation! i think that both mine and azalea's modding styles this session were the relator, and she was super friendly and kind! we didn't run into any challenges and i think overall it went really well!

Session date: April 20th, 2021
Session time: 5:45pm-6:15pm
Room: Teen Communtiy Room
Notes: Another wonderful session modding the TCR. This time it was quite quiet so Emma and I were forced to adapt our modding styles a bit and act more as Socilaizers rather then relators. Emma used tactics such as offering cookies to restart the conversation when it died down a little. A tactic that got a good response from the participators in the chatroom at the time! Looking forward to the next session ♥️

activity #2
partner: @Azalea98
session date: april 20, 2021
session time: 5:45-6:15pm
room: TCR
notes: this session was pretty good overall as well, but a bit quieter than our previous one! since it was more quiet, we both were more of a socializer modding style to spark conversations and try to move the conversation and be a bit more fast-paced! the challenge we faced was the quiet room, but i think changing our modding style helped move the conversation and keep it flowing!

Activity #5
partner - @Asherwolfice
Date - 20th April
Time - approx 7 pm ET
Room - member community room
notes- Asher blends in in the crowed but has a professional distance.
Activity #28
Partner: @CommunityModCharlie
Session date: April 20th, 2021
Session time: 5:00pm-6:00pm
Room: Support Room 24/7 / Member Community Room
Notes: During the hour, I hosted SR check-in and MCR fun events. I found the SR check-in session a bit challenging as the session was really active and hard to keep up with. MCR was a bit more relax in the sense that everyone just wanted to have a good time and didn't mind that I might not respond to all messages. I was a mix of socializer and relator where as I feel charlie is a mix of thinker and relator. (do note that this is my impression and could easily be inaccurate)
Activity #29
Partner: @LuLuRings
Session date: April 20th, 2021
Session time: 9:00pm-10:00pm
Room: Family & Caregivers
Notes: Co-hosted open chat with Lulu. It was a chill and fun session. We didn't even realize what time it was till the session was almost over. Thank you for letting me co-host with you! There's always much to learn. ^_^
Activity #30
Partner: @CommunityModElliot
Session date: April 20th, 2021
Session time: 10:00pm-10:30pm
Room: Support Room 24/7 / Member Community Room
Notes: We spent the first 15 minutes or so in MCR hanging out with the members. Then hosted the SR check-in for the hour. Elliot is socializer. I'm a mix between thinker and relator. Thank you so much for letting me join you on your shift!
