Announcement: Group Mod Challenge
Hello Moderator Team
I’ve got a challenge for you! Are you ready?
- Take a look at the communication styles as shown in the image above. Which four of the styles fit your communication style best? Let us know that in the comments below!
- Find a mod to partner up with to go mod and foster healthy conversation in the chat rooms for half an hour at least 6 times in a two-week span.
- Observe and take notes on the communication approach of your mod partner and the mod partner will be doing the same for you. (Please note that communication styles and approaches can and will vary and that’s alright!)
- Participate in the Group Mod Zone Room and compare your notes and share with fellow mods to learn about each others’ communication styles. Also, share the vibe of the room you both were modding to share in the Mod Room. The vibe of the room here means how was the room environment at the start of joining and when you left. You could share it on a scale of 1-10 where 1 would be “Meh” and 10 as “Awesome”.
Your mod partner can be:
- Any community moderator on shift (just let them know 1-1 before you join as a partner with them on their shift).
- A fellow community-centered chat room moderator of the same community who could be present at the same time as you will be able to participate in the room.
- A global moderator who could be present at the same time as you will be able to participate in the room.
To complete the challenge of visiting and moderating the rooms at least six times in a two-week span, your mod partner can be different if the same mod partner can’t be present. If you have more than one partner, you will simply take notes of different mods' communication styles and approaches and share them with them and fellow moderators in the group mod zone.
Every time you complete one session, drop it in the comments of this thread to log your active participation.
The goal of this challenge:
- Identify your own communication approach in the group dynamics and how it changed/evolved as the situation in the room changed.
- Identify how having a partner with you changed/ helped to foster a supportive and compassionate environment in the chatroom.
- What were the challenges? What surprised you? What type of communication approach works best for you?
At the end of this two-week challenge, you will receive information for the next one! And at the end of the quarter, the top 3 chat room moderators who complete all the challenges successfully will be awarded the most prestigious award: Award-Winning Mod!
Criteria of Award-Winning Mod
- Being passionate about group support chat rooms
- Being compassionate and engaging with the community members
- Being professional and ensure the safety of the room
- Using active listening and de-escalation with all chat participants.
- Being supportive to the fellow chat room moderators and room supports
- Being an open-minded communicator
- Being yourself and having fun while being there in the rooms.
Fun fact! To this day, only 12 chat room moderators have earned this exclusive award! And for extra incentive, every chat room moderator will be awarded 100 cheers per activity they complete.
I am signing up for the challenge and I invite every moderator to accept the challenge too! May we grow together as the best moderators of the community!
Thank you Clara139175 for doing it with me!

Session #2 : 14 April @ 13h10
Room: teen community room
notes: I think our styles are opposite (im thinker and i have a feeling they are more socializer), and its very interesting when modding because it creates more balance. they focus more on relationships and make the room fun for members. its super important and its things i often forget about. I think i should work more with people of their style because i need to learn to be more connected to members and a bit more flexible/less strict sometimes.
I maintains that my style is Thinker after this session 2/6.
@vivelespatates thanks for modding with me!!

Session #1: 14 April @ 13h10
Room: teen community room
notes: Our styles are vastly different in that they identify as a thinker while I lean toward socializer. I tend to be a bit more flexible and I like to mod in a way that isn't as strict toward members while they focus on the rules more and maintaining them. I got pulled in to another mod duty in another room halfway through so I relied a bit more on VIve to take care of the spam problems in tcr. For next session I think I need to do it at a time where Im not as stretched thin.
I suspect my style is a socializer with a mix of relator after this session 1/6.
I accept the challenge. I think I am a Relator

Session #1: April 14th 2021, 2:00pm
Room: Teen Community Room
notes: The room was moving very fast, so we both took a back seat to observe and chime in when needed. Lex appeared more of a Relator - very welcoming and relaxed, while chiming in now and then. They described me as bridging both Relator and Socializer, going in between the roles. This was really interesting to get another person's perspective on modding styles!
@AnnaTess, thank you for doing this with me 😀

Session #1: 14 April at 14:00
Room: teen community room
notes: the room was very fast, so I struggled to know lots about their style but they seemed a bit of a relator and a bit of a socializer. They were calm, welcoming but also I could see they focused a little on friendships too. I think this is great cause It means I get to see how another person mods a room and what our differences and similarities are! 💜
Activity #2
Partner: @CommunityModElliot
Session date: April 14th, 2021
Session time: 2:30pm-3:00pm
Room: Support Room 24/7
Notes:Our styles are very different but we work well together as we're able to find a balance and focus on supporting members. ^_^ I am a thinker while Elliot is a socializer. I've noticed that having a partner in modding is really useful when you may be unsure of how to respond. Chances are that your partner would write a response and you can add on to it.
Activity #3
Partner: @Gozzil
Session date: April 14th, 2021
Session time: 5:00pm-5:30pm
Room: Support Room 24/7
Notes: The room went from quiet to super active in a really short period of time. I struggled to keep up with it. Thankfully Gozzil was there to help out with replying to some of the messages. We discussed and came to the conclusion that no one category would be an accurate representation of our style because we contain traits from different 'categories'. But the best fit one for Gozzil would be relator, and I'm still a thinker. ^_^
Session #1
Partner: @AnnaListens06
Date of Session: 14th April 2021 (EST)
Time of Session : 5:20 - 5:50 pm (EST)
Room: Support Room 24/7
Notes: We are both similar when it comes to listening . The room was reasonably quiet during this time so we had a few people in and out. What I learned is that Anna is definitely a socialiser, who can adjust easily to a faster paced environment where as I need a little more time to assess a room before jumping right in. She was lovely to moderate with and I would say the room say at a 5 1/2. It was postive and supportive when their was people to support but as the room was very calm I would not rate any higher. Being able to use the mod zone was very handy when it came to communicating throughout our session. There was not much in the way of needing to keep anyone extra safe due to the calm and quietness of the room but in future I know both of us would be very into keeping the room under control and safe for all.
Thank you @LoveLilly for being my partner!

Session time: 5:20pm-5:50pm
Room: Support Room 24/7
We are both quite similar in our listening styles, I learnt that I am definatly as Socializer, as I'm very fast paced and quick to react to situations, whilst lilly is more a relator, calm, approachable, makes sure an assessment of the situation is made before jumping in. Which is awesome as this makes sure its dealt with properly.. The room itself I would give a 5 out of 10, it was a little quiet but those who needed support were given it and hopefully left feeling better. The use of the mod zone was great as it was an easy place to share notes and hopefully aloow others to see out thoughts too. Thanks Again @lovelilly you're amazing!
I am definitely a socialiser! 😋
