What is the one thing you do to help yourself feel better when you're experiencing depression? It can be anything at all, even simple things such as a longer warmer shower and listening to music or sounds of nature before bed.

I have a lot of extremes when I'm depressed. I'm in bed too much or never in it, I can't cry or I'm constantly crying. I run from my emotions a lot with books, music, other people, school, fuck even masturbation. I make a lot more jokes about how lazy I am or how much I'm procrastinating when I really just physically can't get myself to do the things I need to do. And through all of it, I hate myself.

I know that feeling. I can't get myself to focus on anything productive. It's like I forgot how to use my skills from lack of use while depression was steam rolling me flat. Starting anything feels way harder than it used to.

Cry. Then cry again, then cry some more, then more crying followed by crying. Between this is me using the internet or something to distract myself from hurting. The one thing I don't do when depressed is eat. I just can't eat when I'm upset or hurting.

No but seriously. I try to bury myself in creative projects, whether it's writing fiction, poetry, making music, conlanging. I've been getting back into painting lately, so that's fun.

Mindfulness meditation is also very helpful. When I simply stop and sit with my depression for a few minutes, paying attention to how I feel physically, I notice there's not much there. Once I stop thinking about and mulling over all the reasons I have to be sad, the sadness and anger and despair begin to evaporate. It doesn't go away completely, it never does. But it takes some of the sting off. And that's enough to get me through the day or night.
