...See more Hello everyone, welcome to this month's check-in! This month is National Suicide Prevention Month. The Hashtag is #BeThe1To Ask Asking people if they experience thoughts of suicide and talking about it may reduce suicidal ideation according to research.  Be There Listening to someone without judgement can help a person feel less depressed, suicidal and overwhelmed. Keep Them Safe Making lethal means less available can make suicide rates decline according to a number of studies. Help Them Stay Connected Helping someone create a network of resources and individuals for support and safety can make them feel more hopeful and take positive action. Follow Up A supportive, ongoing contact with a person might be an important part of suicide prevention according to some studies. (Source [https://988lifeline.org/promote-national-suicide-prevention-month/]) And while doing all of this can be helpful to someone else, taking care of yourself is the highest priority. You have to ensure you are okay and safe before taking care of someone else. You can only help others when your own needs are cared for and you have the capacity to share your energy with someone else. What to do after a sexual assault
by audienta

...See more What to do after a sexual assault If you're in danger, please call your local emergency line. TW: Sexual Assault What is sexual assault? Sexual assault is defined as sexual contact or behaviour that happens without explicit consent. Examples of sexual assault are: * Fondling or unwanted sexual touching * Non-consensual kissing * Forcing a victim to perform sexual acts, such as oral sex or penetrating the perpetrator’s body * Penetration of the victim’s body, also known as rape * Attempted rape What is explicit consent? The consent should be freely and clearly communicated. Also, it can be taken back at any point. You cannot give consent when you’re * incapacitated by drugs or alcohol * feeling pressured, threatened, or intimidated * under the legal age of consent What do I do right after experiencing sexual assault? * If you’re severely injured or in immediate danger, call your emergency line. * If you’re not in immediate danger but do not feel safe, consider calling someone you trust for support. * Know that what happened is not your fault. * If possible, call your local sexual assault hotline or a victim support center. * Go to a health care facility to receive medical attention and a sexual assault forensic exam, also known as “rape kit”. This has to be done within 72h and if possible, you should not go to the bathroom, shower, comb your hair, change your clothes, or clean up the area in which the assault has happened before you have done the exam. * Consider getting Post-Exposure-Prophylaxis, DoxyPEP, or the emergency contraceptive pill to protect yourself from sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy depending on what you want and what your doctor recommends. * If you want to, report the assault. If you’re already getting medical attention, you can tell a medical professional that you want to report the assault. Otherwise, you can also call your local police department. What do I do afterwards? * Safety planning Brainstorm what you could do to stay safe and reduce the risk of future harm. Remember that it is not your fault that it happened though. * Therapy Working with a therapist might help with dealing with the challenges you might face after experiencing sexual assault. * Support group Dealing with the aftermath of a sexual assault is hard. But you’re not alone. In support groups you have the option to talk to other people with similar experiences. * Self-Care Making sure that our body and mind are well cared for can make such a difference. Focus on what helps you to feel grounded and safe. * Be careful with media consumption Portrayal of sexual violence in the media can be very triggering for sexual assault survivors. Remember that you don’t have to watch potentially triggering content. Pay attention to trigger or content warnings and read about the content before you watch it. How can 7 Cups help? 7 Cups can only support you while you’re not in crisis, which means, you can’t be actively self-harming, suicidal, in active danger, or planning on hurting someone while using 7 Cups. Trauma Support Community Check-In for August 2024 - Don't Be A Bully Month
by audienta
Last post
August 13th
...See more Hello everyone, welcome to this month's check-in! This month is "Don't Be A Bully Month"! Bullying can happen to everyone at any age. It can have a massive impact on someone's mental health and can even cause depression, PTSD, and anxiety. Why do people bully? As a few examples, people can bully someone out of jealousy, because they feel threatened, or because they want to express power. Often, bullies have been victims before, which can cause a negative cycle.  You can recognise bullying for example when people claim credit for the work of their target, spread rumours about them, or turn people against the victim. As a bystander, you could try to use humour to redirect the conversation, walk with the victim to help diffuse potential interactions and check in with the bullied person to let them know that you support them. (source 1 [https://www.healthassured.org/blog/dont-be-a-bully-month/]) And if you're bullied yourself, you could try the following strategies: * Decide when you respond; sometimes it might be better to avoid the person. * Make eye contact to signal that you're self-confident. * Try to make space between you and the bully and limit your interactions. * Document the offences to use when filing a complaint or reporting the bully's actions.  * Consider working with a mental health professional to cope with the mental effects of bullying. * Talk to your co-workers/students, friends, and family to feel supported and not alone. (source 2 [https://www.verywellmind.com/how-to-deal-with-adult-bullying-5187158#toc-how-to-deal-with-adult-bullying]) Dealing with a trauma-related mental health disorder can make you an easier target for bullies and being bullied can be traumatic. Therefore, there is a connection between bullying and trauma. If you're reading this and have experienced bullying, please know that you're not alone. We're here for you. ------------------------- Trauma Support Community Check-In for August 2024 1) What is your favourite strategy to stay cool during hot days? 2) Have you ever experienced bullying yourself or as a bystander? Trauma Support Community Check-In for July 2024 - Disability Pride Month
by audienta
Last post
August 7th
...See more Hello everyone, welcome to this month's check-in! This month is Disability Pride Month! (Source Picture [https://www.weareteachers.com/disability-pride-month/]) I mention this pride month as trauma can become a disability and disabilities can lead to trauma. These things are therefore deeply connected. Studies have shown that so-called adverse childhood experiences lead to an increased risk of getting a physical or mental illness (source 1 [https://journals.lww.com/jaanp/abstract/2015/08000/health_consequences_of_adverse_childhood.10.aspx]) and at the same time, medical interventions can lead to PTSD (source 2 [https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0163834321000165]).  Whether you have a visible or an invisible disability, I hope this month, you can be proud of what challenges you've been able to overcome, what life you've been able to build for yourself and who you have become with, despite and maybe even because of your disability. And if you're not there yet, if there are still mountains to overcome, I hope you can be proud of yourself for trying, for not giving up, for being resilient. Prince Chong'er mourned his loyalty and buried him in Mianshan. Trauma Support Community Check-In for June 2024 - LGBTQ+ Pride Month

...See more Hello everyone, welcome to this month's check-in! This month is the LGBTQ+ Pride Month!  (Source [https://www.freepik.com/free-vector/rainbow-template-vector-with-happy-pride-month-text_15847292.htm#fromView=search&page=1&position=16&uuid=87c40761-d0bd-4fc1-a870-c74defb3e8b1]) In June 1969, following a police raid of the Stonewall Inn (a gay bar on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village), a group of LGBTQ+ people rioted in New York. This event was very significant to the modern gay rights movement and because of that, yearly organised demonstrations followed it. These demonstrations spread to additional cities in North America and Europe and turned into what we today know as the pride parades. That's also why the LGBTQ+ pride month happens every year in June. (Source [https://www.iglta.org/events/pride-calendar/]) Being an LGBTQ+ member can be very traumatic due to the unacceptance of some people so let's especially think about all the people who had or have to walk a difficult path due to their identity. If you're one of them, know that you're not alone in this. We support you. So no matter if you're part of the LGBTQ+ community yourself or an ally, let's celebrate this month together! ------------------------- Trauma Support Community Check-In for June 2024 1) The LGBTQ+ pride flag is a rainbow. What's your favourite colour or colour combination? 2) Have you ever experienced trauma due to your LGBTQ+ identity or do you know someone who has? Creativity & Self-Expression (Mental Health Awareness Month)
by PeacePink
Last post
May 28th
...See more Hello everyone,  I hope this message finds you in a moment of inspiration and creative energy. As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, I am hosting yet another discussion activity, this time about creative expression. Creativity and self-expression are important in nurturing our inner words and promoting self-discovery. Let's take a moment to delve into the importance of creativity.  ------------------------- Understanding the Importance of Creativity and Self-Expression: Creativity is not reserved for artists; it's a fundamental part of being human. Whether through art, writing, music, dance, or any other form of expression, creativity allows us to tap into our innermost thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Self-expression, in turn, provides a means of communicating our unique perspectives and connecting with others on a deeper level. Embracing creativity and self-expression fosters authenticity, resilience, and emotional well-being. ------------------------- Suggestions for Feedback and Reflection Activities:  1) Freeform Art: Set aside some time to engage in freeform art without any specific outcome in mind. Allow yourself to explore different mediums and techniques, letting your intuition guide your creative process. 2) Storytelling Circle: Gather with other community members and take turns sharing stories from your lives. These stories can be personal anecdotes, fictional narratives, or anything that sparks your imagination. Practice active listening and create a supportive space for each other's creative expression. I will start by writing the first sentence of a story. Feel free to continue the story from where the previous member left off. Add your own ideas and let your creativity flow, while being respectful and abiding by the rules of the Trauma Support forum. Here's the first sentence: As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky with orange and pink hues, young Maya discovered an old, dusty key hidden beneath the roots of an ancient oak tree. 3) Found Object Creation: Go on a scavenger hunt and collect found objects from your environment. Use these objects to create a collage, sculpture, or mixed media artwork that reflects your unique perspective and experiences. Embrace the beauty of repurposing and find meaning in unexpected materials. ------------------------- Mental Health Awareness Month is a space for us to come together and celebrate the infinite possibilities of creativity and self-expression. Whether you're a seasoned artist or just beginning to explore your creative side, your presence and insights are valuable. Feel free to share your thoughts on the importance of creativity and participate in the suggested activities. If you have any creative expression activities that have been particularly meaningful for you, please share them with the community. ------------------------- Tickled pink, PeacePink Feedback & Reflection (Mental Health Awareness Month)
by PeacePink
Last post
May 19th
...See more Hello everyone,  I hope this message finds you in a moment of reflection and growth. As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, I am hosting another discussion, this time about feedback and reflection. In our journey of personal and collective development, feedback and reflection are essential tools for learning and growth. Let's take a moment to delve into the importance of feedback and reflection and explore how we can develop deeper understanding and progress. ------------------------- Understanding the Importance of Feedback and Reflection: Feedback is a valuable source of information that helps us understand our strengths and areas for improvement. When we receive feedback with an open mind, it provides us with insights that can guide our growth and development. Similarly, reflection allows us to pause, ponder, and make meaning of our experiences, facilitating self-awareness and insight. ------------------------- Suggestions for Feedback and Reflection Activities:  1) Self-Reflection Journal: Set aside some time to journal about your experiences, thoughts, and emotions. Reflect on your successes, challenges, and areas for growth. Ask yourself reflective questions, such as "What did I learn from this experience?" or "How can I approach this differently next time?" 2) Strengths Identification: Take inventory of your strengths and talents. Write down qualities or skills that you excel in and reflect on how you can leverage them to achieve your goals. 3) Growth Mindset Affirmations: Create affirmations that reinforce a growth mindset and repeat them to yourself. Affirmations may include phrases like "I learn from mistakes" or "I am improving with practice." ------------------------- Mental Health Awareness Month is a space for us to come together and engage in meaningful dialogue about feedback and reflection. Whether you're accustomed to seeking feedback and reflecting on your experiences or just starting, your presence and insights are valuable. Feel free to share your thoughts on the importance of feedback and reflection and participate in the suggested activities. If you have any feedback and reflection activities that have been particularly meaningful for you, please share them with the community. ------------------------- Tickled pink, PeacePink Embracing Imperfection (Mental Health Awareness Month)
by PeacePink
Last post
May 18th
...See more Hello everyone,  I hope this post finds you in a moment of acceptance and self-compassion. As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, I am hosting a discussion about what it means to embrace imperfection. Embracing imperfection is not just an act of self-love; it's an acknowledgement of our humanity and resilience. Let's delve into the importance of embracing imperfection and discover how doing so can lead to greater self-awareness and growth.  ------------------------- Understanding the Importance of Embracing Imperfection: In a world that often demands perfection, embracing imperfection is a radical act of self-acceptance. It's about recognizing that we are all flawed and that our imperfections are not shortcomings but rather opportunities for growth and connection. By embracing our imperfections, we free ourselves from the relentless pursuit of unattainable standards and open ourselves up to greater authenticity and fulfillment.  ------------------------- Activities for Embracing Imperfection: 1) Flawed Beauty: Take a moment to reflect on something you consider imperfect about yourself--a perceived flaw, mistake, or failure. Write it down and then reframe it as a source of beauty or strength, and celebrate it as an integral part of your identity.  2) Vulnerability Sharing: Share a story of a time when you felt vulnerable or exposed due to your imperfections. By sharing our vulnerabilities, we create space for empathy and connection, realizing that we are not alone in our struggles.  3) Growth Mindset Reflection: Explore the concept of a growth mindset--the belief that our abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and hard work. Reflect on how embracing imperfection can align with a growth mindset and foster resilience in the face of challenges. 4) Imperfect Creations: Engage in a creative activity where perfection is not the goal. Whether it's painting, writing, or crafting, allow yourself to embrace mistakes and imperfections as part of the creative process. ------------------------- Mental Health Awareness Month is a safe space for us to come together and celebrate our journey towards self-acceptance and growth. Whether you're well-versed in embracing imperfection or just beginning, your presence and reflections are invaluable. Feel free to share your thoughts on the importance of embracing imperfection and participate in the suggested activities. If you have any activities related to embracing imperfection that have been particularly meaningful for you, please share them with the community. ------------------------- Tickled pink, PeacePink ...See more Hello to all! I didn't ask for permission to do this, so if I've overstepped, I apologize and ask for forgiveness. It's been quite a while since there has been any check-in. So I thought perhaps an unofficial check-in might be nice. So please, come as you are, pull up a chair and let us know how things are in your world. I will reply as quickly as I can.

Community Guidelines

These are the Trauma Support Sub-Community Guidelines, which have been drawn up in addition to the 7 Cups main guidelines and are specific for the Trauma Support community:

  • Uphold and comply with the 7 Cups main guidelines
  • Respect everyone, members and listeners alike
  • Do not discourage/be unsupportive/blame/judge one another for their past
  • No graphic, in depth descriptions or pictures which could be triggering for others - in forums, chat and support session
  • Please always add a trigger warning if you believe your thread could be potentially triggering/harmful and/or contains one of the topics on this list. Also, please add a short topic description to the trigger warning (e.g. "Trigger Warning: Domestic Abuse) and if you're in a group support chat, wait a moment to see if everyone is comfortable with the topic. If not, agree on a time span during which the person who's not comfortable with the topic leaves the chat. Once they come back after this time span, change the topic.
  • Cursing not permitted and must be asterisked. (It is fine to vent and to express appropriate anger, but as curse words have often been used during abusive and traumatic experiences, we ask members and listeners to asterisk abusive/curse words to avoid triggering and upsetting members where possible and to maintain a respectful environment and to encourage positive and healthy expression of anger.)
  • Forums postings made by listeners and members should be transparent, made in English and should not be blocked out using colouring to disguise content of wording/messages sent between members/listeners, to maintain the safety of all users of the trauma sub community and to ensure all rules are being complied with.
  • Everyone is unique and their experiences are individual to them. Everyone’s experiences and how they think and feel about these are valid. Everyone reacts to traumatic experiences differently. This will be respected and appreciated without judgement.
