World Mental Health Day: Embracing Mindfulness

...See more Hello, community,  I hope you are all taking it easy this week. As we all know World Mental Health Day is observed annually on October 10th. It is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about mental health issues and challenges and promoting well-being. When it comes to promoting well-being, mindfulness is one of the powerful practices to attain it. Today I want us to explore this topic and how it can significantly enhance our mental health.  So what is mindfulness?  It is the practice of being fully present in the moment, without any judgment. It includes paying attention to our thoughts, feelings, and sensations without getting caught up in them. In today's busy world, mindfulness is the key to taking care of our well-being. Some of the benefits of practicing mindfulness are:  * It helps to reduce stress by calming the mind and body. It helps to lower cortisol levels, a hormone associated with stress. * When we are focused on the present moment, mindfulness can help to alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. * It helps individuals better understand and manage their emotions, leading to greater emotional resilience. * Regular practice of mindfulness can improve sleep quality by reducing racing thoughts and promoting relaxation. * Also helps individuals become more aware of their thoughts and behaviors, leading to greater self-understanding. By practicing mindfulness in our daily lives, we can improve our mental health and overall well-being. So let's commit to making mindfulness a priority in our daily lives and foster a culture of taking care of ourselves and being compassionate to ourselves and each other. Finding comfort through grief using mindfulness

...See more Check In for : December 2nd to December 4th 2024 Last week I had to put our family fur baby of 12 years down because she was having problems walking, her hips were giving out . Some know I own a pit bull named harley davidson, she is our world and it was too much seeing her in pain. Here is the last picture of her waiting at the vet.  How do we find comfort through grief: Grief is associated with losing a loved one, relatives, friends and pets. It can also mean losing a job we were doing for years or a long marriage or relationship dating someone. Grief is a mixture of a lot of feelings and emotions.  The path of grief is a personal journey we all go through it some hit ourselves more than others, it is how to deal with it, we are all different in handling things. There are times when grief can come back after experiencing it first time around. The following is how to handle grief when we are experiencing it . Common ways grief may show up: Emotional rollercoaster: The range of emotions we face are anger, sadness, guilt, confusion and even relief. No one is the same how we handle these emotions may be different person to person. Physical symptoms: Grief can also effect our physical well being. It can bring fatigue making us want to sleep our worries away. It can also hinder our daily activities to where we do not want to do anything, headaches and stomach aches. Social withdrawal: Grief can make us not want to be around anyone during social functions. It also can make it hard to talk about to others, so we distance ourselves. What are some ways you handle grief? What emotions are you feeling when dealing with it? ...See more Check In for November 11th to November 13th 2024 Happy Veterans Day to those who celebrate this day and to those who have served in our Armed Forces  or with children in the Armed Forces we thank you for your service. This week's forum post is about judgement and beliefs in Mindfulness. Judgment is defined as the act or instance of judging. The ability to judge, make your own decision and form of an opinion objectively.  A belief is defined as to have trust, faith and confidence in someone.  We as humans are active thinkers constantly thinking about things everyday. It is like the expression " MY mind is all over the place" is because we are not just thinking of one thing, Our minds may have several things floating around. When someone in our life does wrong by us there are many things we begin to think about "why they did or said something"  " Why did they have to hurt me" "what did I do wrong for them to be rude or disrespectful to me". This is known as over thinking because we begin to have things floating around our mind of what happened. How to make the Holidays less stressful

...See more Check In December 13th to December 15th 2024 As we approach the holidays season whichever you are celebrating, how do you try to stay non stressful. Our holidays are a tradition, giving gifts making those who receive them happy , making holiday meals just like our mom or grandmothers did. Preparing for the event can bring stress. The stress we face during the holidays make us go in various directions. It is like we are being pulled in certain ways and make our minds spin with what ifs, should i do this, what if everyone is not happy.  We can eliminate this by asking for help from family members, maybe the can bring a certain dish the like to make or bake a dessert for the after dinner meal. There maybe a time where we want to do certain things in preparations for the big day.  We should practice gratitude rather than being negative. Writing a to do list or what we need for dinner will help us have a set plan. Go shopping for things to have so we do not have to run out at the last minute, know which day to being preparing the main course and have it set up so all we do is pop it into the oven the day it is to be cooked. This is where asking for help can come in so it is not all in your hands.  A good idea also is to do a 12 minute mindful work out to ease yourself back into the task at hand. Notice what comes to mind and do a relaxation method. I try to practice deep breathing in between tasks I am doing. I sit down and meditate, breath in and out slowly. What are some ways you handle stress during the holidays? Do you ask for help in preparing the meal for the holiday from family members or friends who are invited ? Healing loneliness with mindfulness

...See more Check in for December 9th to December 11th 2024 How do we heal ourselves when we are lonely. People can be alone and not feel lonely. More people are dealing with loneliness than ever before.  Being alone vs being lonely: You can be surrounded with friends or family and still feel loneliness. Loneliness is more about  the amount of time you spend with people you love or like but not spending a lot of time with them. Truth is we need to be around people, we need to share our lives with others. When we are around people is builds our healthy life.  Letting go of loneliness: Reconnect with yourself  You can do this by either doing a breathing exercise or meditation. This will relax your mind from spinning around with things and help you reconnect to who you actually are. Begin loving who you really are: Do you love the person you are? If you shook you head no then you need to look deep down into your soul and find out why. Then we need to fix the negatives to become positive and live a happy life. A good exercise for this is journal writing, write down what you do not like and find ways to fix it so your happy.  Being alone vs being around people: Sometimes when we are alone we think of others and wish they wee there to keep us company. Sometimes when your out with friends you may wish you stayed home for some reason.  What steps can we take to have more or less time around others? ...See more Check In November 24th to November 26th 2024 A regular routine of Meditation  can help improve our heart health. What is good for our minds is also good for our heart. When we improve our meditation we are looking our for our body with our mind, spirit and health all together. Maintaining a healthy diet, enough sleep and exercise we can go along way. When we practice mindfulness it is not just sitting on a chair or on an exercise mat it is also working the body through tai chi, walking, running and swimming. Meditation helps us relieve stress and keep our breathing in a slower motion and not fast and hard.  There are many different styles and approaches to meditation, but here is a simple routine to begin with. * Sit quietly and close your eyes. Breathe slowly. * Relax all of your muscles, beginning with your feet, legs, and thighs. * Shrug your shoulders and roll your neck to the left and then right. * On each exhalation, say the word "peace" out loud or to yourself. * When your thoughts wander (and they will), don't get discouraged. Simply go back to repeating the pattern. * Continue for five to 10 minutes. Beauty is the outward appearance.  If we are told we are too fat or negative compliments then we lower our self confidence.  Society lies to us because our beauty comes from within ourselves. Some people show their beauty on the outside while being negative from the inside.  We have been taught through out our lives that the appearance does not matter. When you think beauty think of how you feel simply being you. No one is perfect we all make mistakes in life. When I hear the word beauty I think of beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Beauty comes from my inside, my heart felt commitments to other. Sure I may not be pretty to others on the outside but my heart is their for anyone even those who are not nice to me. ...See more Check In for : November 21st to November 24th 2024 When we reset our minds does not mean we are erasing hardship it means we are navigating gracefully.  In the fast paced world we are living in sometimes we feel overloaded and tired. By accepting what we are going through we can reduce any stress and begin to embrace a peaceful way. Resilience is how we recover from things and are able to move on. We reshape and reframe our minds and fix a situation back to being normal. Every so often things have us feel like we are in a tornado. Things begin to get unclear and we have to take a moment to regroup  How can we restart our mind here is a following ways: Accept the chaos - Recognize what is happening and embrace it because we can overcome this. Embrace flexibility - embrace what may be going on, feel the emotions we are in and practice cognitive flexibility. This when we recognize what is happening and prepare ourselves to change it.  Honor Rhythms - Find a way to  support our mental and physical well being. Find a meaning - sometimes spiritually getting in our mind can help us cope. By practicing meditation along with mindfulness can help us become better. How do you deal with setbacks? Befriending our powerful emotions

...See more Check In November 3rd to November 6th 2024 It is important to know why befriending our feelings that is everyday feelings, anxiety, depression, fear and grief. It is common to feel a bit anxious or scared before we do things it can be a presentation at work or a feeling of proud after winning something like a competition in school event.  We begin to feel our heart beat faster, being jittery where we can not sit or stand still these our emotions. Some emotions can make us upset a loss of a loved one or pet or child, loss of a job promotion. We hold ourselves to show the outer core of being okay when inside we are really not okay.  We try to find a path that help us move forward in expressing our feelings. It is how we ask for others to help us or we turn to Mindfulness to help us cope with feelings. Feelings simply mean we are alive and human beings not to be judged or criticized for how we feel.  Living life fully means having an open heart. We use all our senses: touch, smell, hear and taste. When feelings are noticed people will tend to become calmer.  examples: is it okay to feel this way?  it's not the end of the world we will get over it?  it's a feeling of being human Above is a primary of emotions. Which of these are you feeling right now? how can we make you feel calmer? how do you feel when your emotions are running wild? how do you calm yourself down. We need as a community to show love not only to ourselves but to others in the mindfulness community. We need to show support and not be afraid to ask for support. The check in posts for friday to sunday will be a brief summary of what was discussed for the week. I will try to include a link for both discussion so you may further read on them if you would like. This week's discussion topics: Steps in Self Acceptance and accepting yourself - Coming to terms with yourself and how mindfulness can help. Steps in Self Acceptance and accepting yourself: How do we find the necessary steps in finding self accepting for ourselves, fist we must self aware and make a plan to set an intention. By recognizing our feelings, and pain, thoughts, welcoming them and separate ourselves for them is the beginning of how we accept self acceptance. Self acceptance is to forgive ourselves by showing compassion for ourselves  and not to judge ourselves. We understand that in a certain situation we did our best and should not put ourselves down for it but to work on rebuilding this into a positive. When we achieve this goal we can look at ourselves better in the mirror and smile. We can praise ourselves that we did something good and to reward ourselves for it.  The following link are 25 exercises we can practice for self acceptance https://positivepsychology.com/self-acceptance/   How to cope on bad days using mindfulness: Mindfulness can be incorporated into our daily routine such examples drinking coffee first thing in the morning, playing with our children or pets, doing morning chores or just sitting looking outside our windows.  When having as I call them off days tell yourself it is a bump in the road and that we can overcome them. Reflect on the positive things we have in life and smile. A bad day to me is like when I am not feeling well. One thing we can do when having a bad days is breathing skills. We can also try grounding. The Mindfulness Center welcomes you to a place where it is okay to just be, and not worry about 100 things. You can observe nature or your own room, follow your breath going in and out, or be aware of your feet touching the sidewalk as you head home. It is all mindfulness. 

There are no hard and fast rules on how to be mindful, and you do not have to do anything a certain way. There are guidelines to help us stay on the path of mindfulness, like in the Daily Checkins, where team members share insights and tips about mindfulness. You can join in the discussions there, or in any of the forum threads. 

You will also find videos in the resource center that talk about what is mindfulness and guide us on a journey to having an actual experience right now of what it feels like to be free of our “thought train”, as we let ourselves go and relax a bit. If all of this sounds good, join us for hosted sessions in which you can discuss and experience mindfulness first hand.
