The first 3 conversations helped us set the foundation for this discussion. The idea that the problem is the path or the obstacle is the way comes from the Stoics. If interested, I also recommend this book as a good overview of stoic thinking. I think there is a tremendous amount of wisdom in these ancient ideas. I'm glad to see much of it resurfacing now. ÃÃÂ
This disucssion is the most important discussion in this course. This is the core insight to learn for your own personal and professional development as well as the key insight that will continue to help us grow and evolve at 7 Cups. Please really take your time to think through these ideas. They matter and they are meaningful. These ideas can help change the trajectory of your life.

Key points from chapter 4 were:
Problems teach us to seek help. They require us to be vulnerable and seek help from our peers and community.
Problems also break us out of our distraction systems by essentially hounding us whenever we try to do something else. This forces us to deal with them.
Problems also get us to stop living in denial and force us to change.
Perception- The way we see a problem
Action- To actually do something about the problem
Will- What we can’t control and understanding that there are things that are bigger than us
@Readylistener
Yes. It's great to break out of those distraction systems.
1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread.
A: 1. problems teach one how to authentically care for other people. 2. problems teach one humility. 3. solving problems changes one.
@loveagape
Yes. Going through this process really changes us. Some for the better and some for the worse.
2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
A: 1. perception- how one sees the problem, is how one will determine what type of problem it is.
2. action- towards the problem, one should take an action, not just sit there, and do nothing about it.
3. will- having the will to change ur problems to "a way", is very important, do not get lose on one's problem, rather than being stuck, make it an opportunity!
@loveagape
Great response :)
@loveagape
I like how you see taking action. There are a lot of us that face evil on a daily basis that others don't even want to acknowledge.
@GlenM

3. Problems reach you to ask for help: They teach you about life and how it's okay to ask for help
2. Watch the overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
1.Perception: how we see the world surrounding us and our problems
2.Action: How and what we do what we do and how we solve our problems
3 Will: working on building ourselves ( inner strenght)
@thisisirene
Yes. The only way that we can level up is to ask and receive help. As we level up, we encounter different people.
@GlenM
1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread.
The three points in this chapter that stand out to me are as follows:
We shouldn’t run away from problems because somehow problems are a blessing in disguise.
Problems help us by breaking out of denial systems.
Denial of problems can lead to our downfall.
. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
The three key components outlined are:
Perception – The way we see the problem is our perception towards it, we should think of the problem as an opportunity rather than a setback.
Action – After perception comes action where we do what’s necessary to deal with the problem.
Will – To accept the things we cannot change is will. Whether it be our loved ones, or death, or anything else, if it's not something we can influence, we should accept it.

Well said, thanks for sharing and making our community a better place :)
@giggleZebra2708
Aw thanks
@marvelloustree1111
Yes. It's great to get past the denials and find solutions by making opportunities.

1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread.
The first key idea and concept that stood out to me was definitely the value of a problem or the importance of a problem. Secondly it would be that problems make us vulnerable and that is best solved with another’s assistance. Lastly it would be the concept that problems help us to open up and care for other people through our hearts. I believe that the last point is the most significant out of them all, as I have personally experienced them many times and this has taught me to value relationships and people.
2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book “The Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
Perception: It's the way that something is understood or interpreted. We all perceive situations every single day and sometimes it can be affected by bias, because bias shapes the way that we tend to perceive something
Action: A step we take in solving something or acting.
Will: Gives us the strength and power to deal with things or to help us understand situations better which we have no control over.
@giggleZebra2708
I am happy to see that you realize that we are affected by bias and that you really care about having compassion.
@GlenM
1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread. ÃÃÂ T
that asking for help is not a bad thing. Sometimes we ask for help in situations when needed. and giving help bonds people closer together
2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video. ÃÃÂ
There is always a way to a solution at times to things we face in the world. He outlines there is
1. perception- the problem we have
2. action - how we approach this problem
3. will - conclusion in how we work at it
@pamharley003
I like the idea of asking for help and creating that bond.

Problems break down denial and in turn, breaks you out of distraction systems
There will come a point in time when we would no longer be able to ignore the immensity of our problems as it will break down our denial, forcing us to face our reality. Even when in our distraction systems, the problems will still be there, until we do something about them.
Problems teach you to ask for help
When faced with adversity, we are almost always stronger together and problems can teach us that.
Problems help you level up
Problems are learning experiences we have in order for us to become better versions of ourselves. The more hurdles we overcome, the stronger we’ll become.
2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
Perception
The way we look at a problem will shape the way we respond to it i.e. if we think of it as a hopeless case, then we will most likely treat is as such and not do anything about it.
Action
On the other hand, if we can look at the problem in a way where we can accept that it is what it is but also ask ourselves what we can do about it, we will be able to take action to counter the problem.
Will
This is a discipline of the will i.e. to have an acceptance of things that are out of our control; good or bad and instead, focusing on what we can control by working on our inner strengths and fortitudes.
@Cristen
It's true that there eventually comes a time that we have to face our problems and that distractions will not be of any help to us. I like how you realize that we need to stay courageous and self-determined in order to get stronger.
@Cristen Very well thought out answer !
1. (a)Problems teach you to ask for help. (b) Problems help you level up (c) problems teach you to open up and care, from your heart, for other people. 2. The three components mentioned by him in the video is - perception, action and will. --Perception - The way we look at Problems is very important. We can either cry about it or solve it and raise a level above. --Action - The way we act is based on our thinking. Working positively towards solving our problem is very important as it brings us one step closer to what we are aiming for. -- Will - As the famous saying goes 'where there's a will, there's a way'. If you want to do it, if you have the will, you're already half way there.
@SweetDreamer69
Yes. If we are determined to find a way; we will find a way
1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread.
1. Problems are not to be seen as weaknesses, they are opportunities for us to improve and change into a better person.
2. They teach us the core skill of asking for help. Working with others to figure out a solution is a vital skill!
3. Problems force us out of our distraction systems. We have to let go of denial to face them.
2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
Ans: Perception- Different people may perceive problems in different ways. Problems are not setbacks, they are merely obstacles to overcome that give us the opportunity to improve.
Action – The steps that we take towards solving the aforementioned problem.
Will – Will is where we have to accept that certain things are beyond our control. If it’s not within our circle of influence, we have to accept that.
@cuteeeezombieeee
I agree that working with others is a vital skill. Sometimes it seems like we are working alone, but there are always people working with us. It's just that we can't always see it. But the results manifest from time to time.
