The first 3 conversations helped us set the foundation for this discussion. The idea that the problem is the path or the obstacle is the way comes from the Stoics. If interested, I also recommend this book as a good overview of stoic thinking. I think there is a tremendous amount of wisdom in these ancient ideas. I'm glad to see much of it resurfacing now. ÃÃÂ
This disucssion is the most important discussion in this course. This is the core insight to learn for your own personal and professional development as well as the key insight that will continue to help us grow and evolve at 7 Cups. Please really take your time to think through these ideas. They matter and they are meaningful. These ideas can help change the trajectory of your life.

1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread.
The first thing that stood out to me was that problems hold more value than we put on them and if we dealt with them head on instead of avoiding and ignoring them, we would actually learn and grow. The second thing I learned is that problems get worse, and more annoying, the more we avoid or ignore them. The third key point I learned is that knowing how to frame our problems in the right light is important for positive growth, we need to see problems as opportunities to improve ourselves.
2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
The three key components he outlined have to do with how he broke down stoicism into 3 disciplines. The first discipline was perception, or how we see the problem. What we tell ourselves about an event or action will have a great impact on what we do and think in the future.The second discipline is action, or to do something about the problem using what you have. The third component he outlines is will, or understanding our own mortality and understanding there are greater things than ourselves.
@CognitiveACE
Great response! The point about problems holding more value was also the first thing that stood out to me.

I couldn't couldn't access the book yet I read the description of the book. It gives insight on how to experience tranquility and freedom from worries and emptiness.
The video focus on changing obstacles to opportunities. This can be done through these components:
1. Positive perception to challenges
2. Taking action with creativity, persistent and ingenuity.
3. The will; this involves building inner fortitude and strength..
And I really like the statement that says what stands in the way becomes the way.

1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread. I think three key points that stand out to me are the fact that problems will never stop leaving you alone, the fact that facing your problems is the best way to handle them and that problems teach you to ask for help. These really hit me hard because I struggle with OCD and for most of my obsessions, I don't have the strength yet to face them head on because I know how much anxiety they will bring. My brain finds ways to go around the block or find another way to avoid the problem and it has definitely impacted my daily life in many ways.
2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video. The first component is perception. Perception is how you see a problem and your perspective on it. The next component is action. Action is how you act on a problem and what your plan is. The last component is the will. The will is what we can't control in life and how we go about these things. There are things we will never understand.

1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you.
- Everyone has problems, today or tomorrow they will be something that could cause trouble for you, the most important thing is to face them head strong, guns blazzing. Learn how to deal with them in healthy ways.
- Realise that having problems is not the most terrible thing in the world and look at them from the positive persectives like learning steps of improving and getting better at doing things.
- Lastly, when in trouble don't forget to ask for help, it's a good and healthy way of resolving problems rather than suffering we can learn from those who have experienced certain stuff and solve our problems faster.
2. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
1. Perception: The way we percieve things around us and our understanding of them.
2. Action: Our behavior and thoughts mold our actions, it's the way we do certain things by facing the problems and solving them.
3. Will: Our state of mind and ability to do the things under our control.
Like others mentioned he was too fast in his speech and kinda difficult to understand.
@BookChunky
I love how you highlighted how everyone had problems, whether it is now, or later.
@BookChunky
Really loved your first answer!

Thank Youuu!
@BookChunky I really liked how you put it!
1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread.
1.) Problems are gifts. They can have disguised value, and can be very helpful and should be treasured.
2.) Problems reach you to ask for help. (I loved this point especially!) They teach you humanity, and teach you that handling on your own isn't an option. I feel like this could strengthen relationships, and decrease the stereotypes around asking for help.
3.) Problems help you level up. They help you move forward, and can show you that you are stronger than you realized.
2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
1.) Perception: how we look at/view the world, and at problems. Do we see it in a negative way, or as an opportunity? The story you tell yourself about that thing can really impact on what thing will be.
2.) Action: what do we do, or how do we react to the problem? How do we face the problem, to try and solve it? You can respond with creativity and persistence and ingenuity, and using what you have to the best of your ability.
3.) Will: Looking at the things that we cannot control, and accepting it, and then working on building inner strength.

Problems help you level up. They help you move forward, and can show you that you are stronger than you realized. ◀︎ This is cool ❤️ love it!
1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread.
The Aunt Maggie metaphor really stood out to me. I like metaphors a lot and problems are a lot like that nagging, know it all aunt. They may not leave you alone, but if you give them the time that they need they can often teach you something valuable, even if its something you dont want to hear.
I also liked the point of how problems help you level up and it said that solving problem changes a person because it teaches them that they are stronger than they realized. Often times we dont realize our own strength, and if we spend our entire life avoiding problems we dont get the chance to grow and develop as people.
Lastly, I liked the part about how going through problems makes you more compassionate and empathetic. Once youve been through something you dont want others to experience the same pain you had to go through so you are more ready, willing, and prepared to help others not have to face their problem alone.
2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
Perception- How you see the problem. It is the story you tell yourself about the problem. Every problem out there has a story that is based on our interpretation, but our interpretation is limited, and so therefore is our perspective. In the case of problems, if we can learn to perceive problems as a way to grow and learn, it prepares us for number 2.
Action- What are you going to do about the problem? You may not be able to change the situation, but you can control how you respond to the situation. You can gain control by taking control.
Will- Inner strength about what we can not control. In this part he talked about amor fati (the love of fate) and just being able to let fate have its way so you can pick up and start to build out of whatever fate leaves behind for you.
@InvaderStitch
Isn't it so wonderful about facing problems firsthand, that we become so compassionate and empathetic about ourselves...? All the best with LDP :)

How problems can help us break out of our denial stage
How problems are not always bad and can help us grow
How avoiding/denial is not a solution to solving a problem, we need to face them head on
2.Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
Perception - How we view things. One thing can seem like a problem or not much of a problem depending on our view towards it
Action - Things we do in a given situation to get results.
Will - This is our inner feeling/strength to perceive and understand our ability and the things around us.
@Magicallykermit58
Do you have any tips from breaking out from these denail stages with our problems?
@Asherwolfice
Do you mean from the book or in our day to day life??
@Magicallykermit58
How avoiding/denial is not a solution to solving a problem, we need to face them head on ◀︎ Couldn't agree more with that ❤️
1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread.
1) Problems are gifts
2) Problems help you to level up
3) Problems teach you to think from other's perspective and better understand this world
2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
1) perception-this is how we see the problem, this might be miserable and seems like a huge rock in front of you, makes you angry, makes your pain and despair. But, that just depends on how we see it. Great men and women used it as an opportunity, to improve, to be strong. This is the first stage when we solve a problem.
2) will-this is when this huge rock is actually a huge mountain, we can get through this but we are never ever going to remove it from where it is. So this will help us to be more optimistic and happier because this is already out of our circle of impact, why don't we try to be happier if this thing cannot be changed?
3)action-take action to your problem is really important because that's where you officially begin, not just imagine your plan A, plan B, etc.
@Irena0225
I wish some of the people that I peer support saw there problems of them to understand them better including the world.
The first key point that stood out to me was that we grow so much when dealing with problems, and that they are necessary for us in order to grow. Also, problems can help us get out of our comfort zone and help us realize what we are capable of, lastly, it teaches us to ask for help.
The 3 components outlined in this video were perception- it is the way we view things, and a problem depends on how it is looked at. Action- the things that we do in a situation that results in something. Will- is our ability to get through things.
@lovelyNight9853
I liked how you pointed out problems help us come out of comfort zone and make us realize that we are actually capable of much more than we know.
1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread.
1) Poblems help us to break free from Denial and Distractions is hard but can be done facing our problems and learning to truly care for other people which can involve emotional pain and struggle.
2) Strong and successful people are aware that obstaacles in their lives are a blessing indisguise. They are gifts.
3) Problems teach us to be authentic and truly care. Problems give a visceral understanding of other person's problem.
2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
3 Components from the Video are:-
3 aspects of stoicism are -
1) Perception - how you perceive and respond to the problem.
2) Action - Respond to the problem with creativity, ingenuity, persistent by doing something about it.
3) Will - Buidling strength, fortitude by looking at the bigger picture.
