Course 3: PL 102 - One Key Metric (Discussion 5)

GlenM August 26th, 2020

We've been talking about denial and distraction in this course. It is pretty easy to get knocked off track in life. One way to stay on track is to have a core metric that guides you. If you have a north star that you are working towards, then you know how well you are doing. It is harder to be in denial or to participate in activities that are less helpful in meeting that goal. Â

There are 2 parts to this discussion. Â

1. Work with your team or mentor and identify the key metric you are hoping to help move. Post daily (or the cadence that makes sense) in the  3 key things thread to highlight what you are doing to help us move 7 Cups forward. Please post here why this goal of choosing a single metric is important. Think of how this is important in your professional life, but also how this can help you personally as well. Â

2. (TW: themes that deal with death) Read chapter 12 and do the exercise where you imagine it is the end of your life. If comfortable, post what you imagine people saying to you at the conclusion of the exercise. If not comfortable, then please share how the exercise impacted you. What you imagine them telling you is your compass. If you are acting in a way that is consistent with what they are saying, then it is very likely that you will end up living a meaningful life. Remember to listen to and follow this compass so as not to be distracted by the clock. Â

I hope that my children, spouse, and co-workers would remember me as a hard worker who wasn't afraid to take risks. I also hope they remember me as kind and loving. I think this exercise helped me to remember to keep my ethic and not be so nervous and to not procrastinate. I need to be more confident.

@LavenderFlower

Choosing a single metric is important because it prevents distractions and gives us something most important to focus on. The key metric I would like to work on is Balance. I end up always either working too hard or being too distracted. I need to find a way to balance both and I am working on it by scheduling my time better.

My key metric is quite simply to help others on this site as a listener, whether it be toward a member and making an effort to actively listen to them, or whether it be toward a listener who needs support helping members. I think it is important to have a single metric because it allows you to brainstorm and think about the big picture "goal." As in course 1, I believe, the system is an important target, not the goal. By having a single key metric in mind, I am able to think about the system and what small things I can be doing now in my everyday roles/attitudes/etc which amount to a difference overtime toward the goal. Whether the metric be here on 7Cups, at work, or in my personal life, it remains important to focus on the things I can change and have control over.

From this exercise I learned that I want others to think of me fondly, someone who was empathetic, happy, supportive, trustworthy, and honorable, and I plan to live by these values throughout my personal and professional life. I want to be someone who truly makes an impact in other people's lives and the community and I want to be remembered as someone who has done that. In all, I want to reach my career goals, and be passionate everyday at my job making a difference in others' lives. Along the way, I want to make memories with people I care about and be there for them.

I think it's really important to know how much tehir word shouldn't have any value. Because certain people can only be good at speaking but doing absolutely nothing when needed

I have messaged my mentors to identify the key metric that I am hoping to help move. I am rather struggling to understand what exactly this is really. I think I can help 7 cups as once I have finished this program I will become a listener chatroom supporter, so I can provide more support and help to listeners.

Everyone would have different viewpoints and would say different things about me, as in thinking how I passed away, who would miss me, I don't have many people in my life so those who do love me would really miss me.

Posted! Having a goal gives you direction. It makes you aware of what you want and what will help you move towards the goal. When you know your path you won't be distracted and it will be so progressive.

I read a similar exercise in the book Living forward. It had a huge impact on me. It feels like life is eternal but the reality is it is short. In order to make the most of it, we must focus on things that matter to us than the things that we do merely please others. Regret is such a big thing. I am sure I don't want to regret sitting near my coffin as a ghost. Death gives meaning to life. It makes us realize the importance of various things. Time, food, family, friends - we shouldn't take anything for granted. I like to be known for my kindness and how I supported them always. I would love to be seen as one in their sweet memories. I'll surely act upon it and always remember to listen to this thoughts!

@hopezzy i love what you said about life seeming eternal but really being short <3 when i look back on my life and the past few years, i also start to realize how time seemed to go by so fast from that moment. it's crazy, and we do need to appreciate our lives and what we have. life is beautiful <3

Choosing a single metric is important because it allows us to have a point of focus to work towards. This is important in both my professional life and personal life in that having a point of focus to work towards allows me to have an achievable goal in mind as I work.

While I’m not comfortable sharing what each person said to me, I do think this exercise impacted me considerably. Imagining that both my daughter and my husband having to say something to me after passing away is an awful feeling. I don’t want to imagine them in that situation.

Choosing a single metric or goal is important because it focuses our attention to target and improve specific aspects of our lives, and narrowing down our focus increases our efficiency. Choosing a clear goal also gives a sense of purpose. Measurable progress is also important to track the improvements that have been made.

This exercise reminded me of the type of person I want to be in life. It also reminded me of the ephemerality of life and motivated me to do as much as possible to achieve this kind of influence.

this was a great chapter <3 when i am near death, i would imagine people telling me that they'll always love me, they always have, and how special and dear to them i am. i imagine them telling me all the memories we've had together, the things we've shared, and the words that we've exchanged that were so significant to both of us. i'm sure there are so many other things they could say, but i do believe that these would be most common when it comes to that

@rrretsuko forgot to post the first part ! haha

choosing a single metric helps us through ambition <3 when we have goals in life and things we want to achieve, we work for those things and strive for success. they give us motivation and help us go on with life. they help us to get the things we want in our lives (if they are good for us). this can also include careers and professions :) they'll make our lives happier and ultimately better !

Active Listening is important to empathize and understand

Practice skills to increase calm

Accept wat life brings to you

This was a very overwhelming exercise for me. It gave me a lot of insights on the path I wish to choose in my life and the connections I want to cherish
