Course 3: PL 102 - One Key Metric (Discussion 5)

GlenM August 26th, 2020

We've been talking about denial and distraction in this course. It is pretty easy to get knocked off track in life. One way to stay on track is to have a core metric that guides you. If you have a north star that you are working towards, then you know how well you are doing. It is harder to be in denial or to participate in activities that are less helpful in meeting that goal. Â

There are 2 parts to this discussion. Â

1. Work with your team or mentor and identify the key metric you are hoping to help move. Post daily (or the cadence that makes sense) in the  3 key things thread to highlight what you are doing to help us move 7 Cups forward. Please post here why this goal of choosing a single metric is important. Think of how this is important in your professional life, but also how this can help you personally as well. Â

2. (TW: themes that deal with death) Read chapter 12 and do the exercise where you imagine it is the end of your life. If comfortable, post what you imagine people saying to you at the conclusion of the exercise. If not comfortable, then please share how the exercise impacted you. What you imagine them telling you is your compass. If you are acting in a way that is consistent with what they are saying, then it is very likely that you will end up living a meaningful life. Remember to listen to and follow this compass so as not to be distracted by the clock. Â

Done, I posted in the 3 key things thread and i will do it in the future too.

Having a single metric is important as it helps you focus solely on it and paves a clear path for you to follow.

I am pursuing my career in AI and my dream goal is to develop an AI which can help people around the world a lot. I imagined a scenario where i have accomplised my task and my AI has helped millions of people out there. I made a lot of people smile. Ofcourse there were those who misused it or criticized it but i know i tried my best, and i pass away with a smile hoping people will remember me in good words.

It's important to choose a single metric so we can focus on our life path and move through it effectively and efficiently. I choose to help the 7 cups community make progress in growth and development.

This is a really morbid way to look at our lives. Anyway, to extend the moral of this whole thing is I want to live life in a satisfied and fulfilled way. I like it when people speak good of me and to me, but there will always be criticis. Everyone has their own opinions and attitudes based on their life experiences and how they have coped and/or overcome them. Worrying about what everyone says or going to say disallows me to accept myself and to live my unique life to my fullest. Living a meaningful life is to reflect on one's own values and to follow them consistently. It is so important to use our intuition as well but we need to look at things with our rational and logical minds as well.

Why the goal of choosing a single metric is important.

An unfocussed life would take you nowhere, even if you had significantly good random ideas about what's valuable to you. You need to devote yoursef to one single metric.

Read chapter 12 and do the exercise where you imagine it is the end of your life. If comfortable, post what you imagine people saying to you at the conclusion of the exercise. If not comfortable, then please share how the exercise impacted you.

People would be saying that this person dedicated their life in spreading kindness and love and they have shown an example to the world on living an inspired and fulfilled life.

This exercise helped me to identify the important things in my life and my true values. It made me realise how precious my life is and there are many people who really care for me.

The chapter 12 of this book is just awesome. I really love it. It was really fun and interesting moreover it's meaningful too. I do imagine sometimes if I die what will happen haha. But I didn't imagine this that my soul will look my funeral and all. It was really like a movie or serial for me lol. I really enjoy it and I can say that some people will really miss me and they would be saying like that she was good but I am excited to see the reaction of my classmates lol. But seriously, after thinking about death we get aware about the preciousness of our lives. Life is really beautiful and precious and we should live and enjoy it at the best. Moreover whenever I think about my death I stopped wasting my time bcoz no one knows what will happen after few minutes so it's better to utilize your life. It was really awesome exercise.❤❤

- I have a personal spreadsheet layout where I post the key things I want to be doing.
- This goal of choosing a single metric is important because it helps me to not drift away from the important thing we need to do. We have limited attention resources and as much as we'd like to, we cannot do everything so it's best to have certain things planned that you most want to be doing and focusing on!

2. (TW: themes that deal with death) Read chapter 12 and do the exercise where you imagine it is the end of your life. It truly made me think and really consider how I want to be remembered. I saw the inconsistency between where I want to be and where I currently am right now. It was a really helpful exercise and now I will try to work towards where I want to be going.

You can't give your life more time, so give the time you have, more life.

@luereurspace Thanks for the inout. It's great that you post the things that you want to be doing. That brings into awareness of the things that need to be fulfilled. It's hard with limited attention resources though. That is why it's best to get more resources. And get more developed and expanded resources as well. As time goes on and people self-develop, this will get better. But we still need to be able to provide the adequate guidance, support and opportunities for this to happen. The only way to go beyond limited is to expand. That includes knowledge, skills and opportunities.

1) It’s important to keep our attention focused on a particular thing rather than many all at once. Doing this eliminates the distraction from our overall goal. 2) This was hard to think about but I would imagine conflicting things would be said about me. My friends and those I am close to would speak highly of me, they would talk about how I put everyone before myself to the point it was a fault. My family on the other hand would talk down about me because that relationship has never really been there. I hope to have a family one day so I hope my spouse and children are there by my side and they talk highly of me. I would hope that I left a good impression on them and that they feel I always tried my best

Identify the key metric you are hoping to help move.
The key metric I’m hoping to help move is group support quality and safety. This is in direct relation to my roles of being a global mod and group support quality mentor with focus on supporting moderators.

Why is this goal of choosing a single metric important?
Choosing a single metric is important so that we don’t lose focus of what we’re working on because we overwhelm ourselves by trying to focus on too many things at once. It is also easier to see the work and progress we’ve made when we choose a single metric to focus on.

Read chapter 12 and do the exercise where you imagine it is the end of your life. If comfortable, share what you imagine people saying to you at the conclusion of the exercise. If not comfortable, then please share how the exercise impacted you.
This exercise made me think about how I want to be remembered and what I want to achieve. Along with what I need to do to get from where I am today to get to where I want to be. In a sense, become more mindful of myself and my own actions and start working towards the goal while I still have the chance to.
