Course 2, Discussion 3: High Expectations and High Warmth

FrenchToast December 5th, 2022

Congrats! You made it the second course in the LDP! In this course, we focus on the specific interpersonal skills needed to be a strong leader on 7 Cups, including mastery of communication skills, time management, conflict resolution, stress management and empowering new leaders.

I know if you are here, you have read our values and culture guide. I would like to start off by further emphasizing one value that's required for a leader to be successful here, and that is balancing High Expectations & High Warmth.

Work environments with high expectations and minimal warmth tend to result in companies that are very driven, rule-oriented and risk-averse. The people do not tend to grow as much personally or professionally. On the other hand, workplaces that are high in warmth, but have minimal expectations, tend to struggle. Everyone is happy and feels loved, but not a lot of effective or focused work gets done.

7 Cups is high expectations AND high warmth. We expect a lot from you. You might feel like we think you are more capable than other people have suggested or maybe even more capable than how you see yourself. That is okay. Every person on the team has outperformed and done better than they expected. This is largely because warmth, patience, and trust help people make much more progress than they have in other environments. We have high expectations, but we will provide plenty of encouragement and guidance to help you get there.

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?

In my opinion, having an imbalance of expectations and warmth as a 7 Cups leader can lead to a range of outcomes. When there is a disparity between expectations and warmth, it can impact the dynamics and effectiveness of my role.

1) Expectations

Scenario 1: If my expectations are too high, it can create undue pressure and unrealistic standards for both myself and the community members. This may result in feelings of inadequacy, burnout, and a decreased ability to provide effective support.

Scenario 2: If my expectations are too low, it can lead to complacency and a lack of motivation among community members. They may not feel challenged to actively engage or strive for personal growth, which can hinder their progress.

2) Warmth

Warmth plays a critical role in fostering a supportive and empathetic environment.

Scenario 1: If I provide insufficient warmth, community members may feel unwelcome or discouraged from seeking help. It can hinder the development of trust and connection. This  impedes the overall sense of safety and comfort within the community.

Scenario 2: Conversely, an abundance of my warmth can create a nurturing and inclusive atmosphere, which encourages individuals to share their struggles and seek support.

✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

If I have too low of expectations or provide too little warmth, it can have significant impacts on both the community and my relationships with fellow leaders.

1. Impact on the community: When I have low expectations, it can result in reduced motivation and accountability among community members. They may not feel challenged or inspired to actively engage and grow within the community. This could hinder their progress and limit the overall growth and vibrancy of the community.

Additionally, if I fail to provide sufficient warmth, it can create an unwelcoming and unsupportive environment. It may discourage individuals from seeking help and hinder the development of trust and connection. People need to feel a sense of empathy, understanding, and support in order to feel safe and comfortable opening up about their struggles.

2. Impact on working with fellow leaders: If I set low expectations for my fellow leaders, it can lead to a fragmented approach to leadership. Without a shared vision and clear goals, collaboration and synergy among leaders may suffer. This can hinder the effectiveness of the leadership team and impede our ability to support the community effectively.

Moreover, if I don't provide enough warmth in my interactions with fellow leaders, it can create a tense and unsupportive atmosphere. Building strong relationships and effective communication requires empathy, respect, and a sense of camaraderie. Without these elements, our ability to work together harmoniously and achieve shared objectives may be compromised.

✨ The solution:

To ensure a thriving community and foster strong relationships with fellow leaders, it is crucial for me to strike a balance. I need to set reasonable expectations that challenge and inspire community members to grow, while also providing a warm and supportive environment where they feel safe to seek help. Similarly, I should cultivate a collaborative and empathetic atmosphere among fellow leaders, where we can openly communicate, support one another, and work together towards our shared goals! 😊💪🏻🌹

What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?

If i have an imbalance of expectations and warmth, It will definitely show in how i handle my daily task and which will result to low productivity.

✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

1. Too low of expectations or warmth in a community can result to disrespect for the leaders, others and the core values of 7 cup. They will also lead to low motivation which affect members participations within the community.

2. There will be frictions in communication within team members thereby affecting the tasks that are supposed to be done.

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?

An imbalance of expectations and warmth leads to teams being unproductive, too little warmth and you become unapproachable and people won’t talk to you. Too few expectations and your team may not reach the goals they need to, to help the community.

✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

1.) Little warmth can lead to members feeling like Listeners don't actually care and may lead to some feeling like we talk very robotically. This would make us less approachable, and

2.) Low expectations can lead to Listeners to become complacent, and not continue to improve their skills. No warmth would also impede communications, likely leading to more communication issues.

@FrenchToast✒️ If, as a 7 Cups leader, there is an imbalance between expectations and warmth, potential repercussions may arise.

✒️ In the scenario of having excessively low expectations or insufficient warmth, it can have dual effects:

1. **Impact on the Community:**
A deficiency in expectations might lead to a lack of standards, potentially resulting in diminished community engagement and quality of interactions. Conversely, insufficient warmth may create an unwelcoming atmosphere, hindering the establishment of trust and support among community members. Striking the right balance is crucial for fostering a positive and constructive environment where individuals feel both challenged and supported.

2. **Impact on Collaborative Dynamics with Fellow Leaders:**
Insufficient expectations among leaders could result in a lack of accountability and motivation, potentially affecting the overall effectiveness of the leadership team. Similarly, a shortage of warmth might strain interpersonal relationships, hindering effective communication and collaboration. Maintaining a balance in expectations and warmth is essential for promoting a cohesive and collaborative leadership environment, fostering mutual respect and shared commitment.

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?

- I myself won't grow

- Others won't grow professionally or personally

- Low expectations = not effective outcomes = reduced satisfaction

✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

1. Impact the overall ratings and safety of the website. Will also affect the people who come onto 7 cups regularly as a safe haven.

2. Blemish reputation and integrity of the leadership team. This will affect the structural hierarchy of the website, and also the listener system.

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?

if i have an imbalance of expectations and warmth as a 7 Cups leader, i believe that i would become emotionally drained and i might develop health complications and symptoms due to stress.

✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

having too low of expectations in the community would result in people not getting the attention and/or help that they need and deserve. if there was too little warmth in the community, i believe that this would lead to conflict and tension between listeners, members, leaders and participants. if there are too low of expectations and too little warmth with regards to working with my fellow leaders, this too would lead to conflict, negativity and stress related issues.

What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?

Having an imbalance of expectations could be extremely unfair to your team. The first thing to comes to mind is person A gets 8 tasks to do within a week where person B gets 3 tasks to do in a week. All tasks are at the same level of work however that would not be a fair work load to person A nor would it be fair to person B as they would not be working to their full potential.

For warmth having an imbalance in that two things come to mind. 1) you are only giving some of the folks the warmth they deserve and not paying attention to some folks. 2) you are not giving anyone warmth.  Both are unfair to the team warmth is an extremely important part to help focus succeed and everyone should be given the right tools to help them succeed

How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

1) I think it will impact the community negativity . It will make people feel less welcome and make people feel like they are not doing a good enough job

2) I think it will leave a lasting impact that is neg to them as well, but it will make an impact on the way they view us as a leader. It might make them feel unnoticed and like they are not good enough. It will also strain the relationships out between leaders, and that is something is not good as well.

@FrenchToast

If there is an imbalance of expectations and warmth, it can lead to several potential consequences for a 7 Cups leader such as

  • The leader may feel overwhelmed, stressed, or unsupported.
  • While the leader may feel appreciated and comfortable, the lack of challenging expectations might hinder personal and professional growth.
  • The community members may feel pressured, stressed, or unsupported. This could create a tense environment, impacting their mental well-being and diminishing the sense of community support that 7 Cups aims to provide.
