Course 2, Discussion 3: High Expectations and High Warmth
Congrats! You made it the second course in the LDP! In this course, we focus on the specific interpersonal skills needed to be a strong leader on 7 Cups, including mastery of communication skills, time management, conflict resolution, stress management and empowering new leaders.
I know if you are here, you have read our values and culture guide. I would like to start off by further emphasizing one value that's required for a leader to be successful here, and that is balancing High Expectations & High Warmth.
Work environments with high expectations and minimal warmth tend to result in companies that are very driven, rule-oriented and risk-averse. The people do not tend to grow as much personally or professionally. On the other hand, workplaces that are high in warmth, but have minimal expectations, tend to struggle. Everyone is happy and feels loved, but not a lot of effective or focused work gets done.
7 Cups is high expectations AND high warmth. We expect a lot from you. You might feel like we think you are more capable than other people have suggested or maybe even more capable than how you see yourself. That is okay. Every person on the team has outperformed and done better than they expected. This is largely because warmth, patience, and trust help people make much more progress than they have in other environments. We have high expectations, but we will provide plenty of encouragement and guidance to help you get there.

What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
An imbalance of expectations, whether high expectations and low warmth or low expectations and high warmth, or both low, will lead to undesirable consequences. Our employees' health and wellbeing may be in question as they achieved team goals. Or people feel appreciated but the team is unable to meet the huge workloads.
How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
1) The community would struggle to improve their matriks in many aspect that driven their mission. Little warmth could drain the feeling of togetherness and belonging.
2) In many leadership roles, we have people who have variations in how we approach the role. We know here the 7 of Cups has high expectations and if with unequal warmth, our checklist will go nowhere deep in our concerns and true collaboration to develop, but just an unrelevant list.

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
This will totally affect my team and it's productivity! A leader should have a balance of warmth and expectations, if not then the whole environment will not be a welcoming place & indirectly will affect to everyone's low moods and less productivity!
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
Having this will result in less work. The community cannot thrive. Although a leader should have warmth and a bit expectations, but it should be up to a standard. Being a lot warm & having low standards , will let the community exploit u and it won't work properly. It will also impact the fellow leaders as they'll feel like I don't have interest in it & indirectly ruining my relationship with them!

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
If I'm a leader and have too high expectations and low warmth, people are going to burn out and lose motivation for what they are doing. If I'm too high in warmth and low in expectations, I would be very kind and empathetic, but standards would slip and lead to ineffective work.
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
Low Expectations: I may not be able to enforce a good standard of work; in the community this may mean that members don't get the support they need and in working with my fellow leaders this may mean I don't pull my weight enough and lower the standards.
Low Warmth: If I lack warmth, the community may feel like I have no empathy for them and that I don't care enough. They may feel like I am not offering the high quality care and support they deserve. For my work with other leaders, if I lack warmth then I may be quick to judge what they are doing/not doing instead of understanding why and supporting them. They may be reluctant to ask me for support.
@Shannon1996 you're on fire, friend! Great answers, you show good understanding of the courses. :)
@FrenchToast If a 7 Cups leader has an imbalance of expectations and warmth, it can lead to various challenges. If expectations are too high without enough warmth, leaders might feel overwhelmed, stressed, and unmotivated, which could result in decreased productivity and potential burnout. On the other hand, if there's excessive warmth without adequate expectations, leaders might lack motivation and accountability, leading to complacency and a lack of personal growth.
@ChillingRain
Well-put! I really admire how detailed your answers are:)

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
It could lead to negative effects in general, like discouragement and demotivation to try your best in something. In terms of things it would affect specifically, maybe the atmosphere as well as my drive to actually fulfil things here
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
I think people typically look for comfort and validation when it comes to the things we do, whether it be simple tasks or a work assignment. So, for both the community and fellow leaders, I believe that having the balance can help with the flow and how productivity is for everyone longterm.

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
An imbalance of expectations and warmth could lead to either a stressful, high-expectation environment or a comfortable, low-expectation atmosphere, impacting well-being and potential for growth. Striking the right balance is key for a thriving and supportive leadership approach.
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact (1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
Low expectations may leave community members unsupported and unmotivated. Insufficient warmth could make the platform less effective in providing a safe space. Among fellow listeners, these imbalances may hinder collaboration and impact the overall effectiveness of support.

To all 7 Cups listeners, your kindness is the glue in this community. Your words are the stitching in the fabric of support. Keep weaving the tapestry of empathy; you're making a profound difference.

What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
It would not work, because everyone needs to be treated with the same, to make them feel a part of the team
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community,
It will give the community, thoughts that, you do not really work hard enough to show you really care, and can be trusted with, there problems.
and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
The other leaders, will not want work with you

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
Having the right balance between expecting good work and being friendly is super important for how we get things done together. If we expect a lot but don't show kindness, it can affect both personal and collective productivity.
On the flip side, if we're all about being friendly and nice but don't expect much, it can lead to passivity and complacency about our tasks. Things might not get done as well as they could, and it might be harder to keep track of what needs to happen.
Finding the right mix of expecting good work and being friendly helps us create a warm and effective work environment. It keeps everyone motivated, the work quality high, and the relationships strong. It's like finding the sweet spot that makes everything work well together.
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
For the users, it might make them feel like we're unsupportive, disrespectful, and suitable for providing guidance and support.
For our fellow leaders, it could mess up how we work together. They might think I'm unreliable, uncooperative, and unprofessional. This can make it hard for us to get things done effectively.

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth? As with imbalance of anything, it is going to create stress and chaos in the environment.
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
1. I think of the balance scales on this. If you have too little warmth, expectations will rise. A high amount of expectations and little warmth can create a stressful community that people don’t want to be a part of. If you have few expectations, warmth goes up and you have an environment where people don’t think they have to meet the expectations.
2. Too little if either affects the balance of a leadership team. It can wreak havoc amongst a leadership team making it ineffective and unable to fulfill the mission of the community.
@Kristynsmama. Keep it up
1. What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
High expectations and warmth are good but imbalance of these two will indicate abnormalities which will impact productivity greatly.
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders
Low expectations will affect the overall vision and mission of any community.
It will reduce supports and encouragement
