Course 2, Discussion 3: High Expectations and High Warmth
Congrats! You made it the second course in the LDP! In this course, we focus on the specific interpersonal skills needed to be a strong leader on 7 Cups, including mastery of communication skills, time management, conflict resolution, stress management and empowering new leaders.
I know if you are here, you have read our values and culture guide. I would like to start off by further emphasizing one value that's required for a leader to be successful here, and that is balancing High Expectations & High Warmth.
Work environments with high expectations and minimal warmth tend to result in companies that are very driven, rule-oriented and risk-averse. The people do not tend to grow as much personally or professionally. On the other hand, workplaces that are high in warmth, but have minimal expectations, tend to struggle. Everyone is happy and feels loved, but not a lot of effective or focused work gets done.
7 Cups is high expectations AND high warmth. We expect a lot from you. You might feel like we think you are more capable than other people have suggested or maybe even more capable than how you see yourself. That is okay. Every person on the team has outperformed and done better than they expected. This is largely because warmth, patience, and trust help people make much more progress than they have in other environments. We have high expectations, but we will provide plenty of encouragement and guidance to help you get there.

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
If I had an imbalance of expectations and warmth, I would be seen as strict and unwelcoming.
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations or too little warmth will impact 1.) the community and 2.) how you work with your fellow leaders?
Too low expectations would lead my team not to perform the best it can, but too little warmth would make the team want to leave because they feel uncomfortable working with me.
@FrenchMarbles
I respect your straight forward response. An imbalance of E & W is strict and unwelcoming. Sometimes it's too sickening and seems fake. It's the level of realness that I feel allows people to feel comfortable reaching out. Even on a listeners worst day, being honest and understanding while guiding the member through the conversation is good. However, a listener on a good day provides more support for the whole 7cups community. The listener would strive to provide comfort and support to more than one member while still prioritizing their mental health.
@FrenchMarbles
Couldn’t agree more, those are real and balances we might face! Fantastic job relating it to your own experiences!
✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
- The team members feel constricted with tasks and deadlines
- They feel that their feelings are neglected
- The team's productivity takes a hit, due to the people having low motivation
If I have low expectations & high warmth:
- People will feel welcomed, but they might not focus on their tasks
- They will become too comfortable
- The team's productivity will again lose its productivity
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
- If I have low warmth, people might not come to me for support, and I will be harder to work with.
- If have low expectations, it will be harder for me to complete tasks on time, and thus lag behind others in the community
@charmingFlower8111
you brought up some really good points there.
@charmingFlower8111 I like the point you made about how low expectations can cause lack of focus.
Ohh you're right I didn't think about people feeling like they can come to me for support
1 a
high expectations and low warmth
I think I would know what is expected but low warmth can cause stress, not getting along with team mares and feeling very uncomfortable. I would totallyshut down and my work would go bad. I do not do well in very strict places.
1 b high warmth and low expectations
I would feel cared for and feel like I can be my self.
with low expectations I would fall behind and having a hard time getting my work down.
2
a I think with high warmth and low expectations
I think me and team would not know what would need to be down and due dates. Also I think the team will have hard time getting any thing down and people may get the idea they slack off from doing their work. I think the community would notice that things is not getting down.
2 low warmth and high expectations
I think me and the team would fight a lot and people leaving the team. It can also lead to burn out.
I think the community would noticed that team is not functioning well
@harmonyLearninghope
Wow! You’ve covered the crux of the concept really well! All the best to you 😊
Your answer is well rounded in playing various sides to the equation.
@FrenchToastClub
What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
I believe this is a case similar to the optimum ratio when it comes too factors of production. Too less or too more of anything has its own advantages and disadvantages. If there are few expectations work gets done but if they are too many expectations this leads to a situation similar to the fixity of factors where efficiency eventually reduces. Similarly, being too warm may lead to more people liking me as a reader. but getting lesser work done. Once again it results in a fall of efficiency.
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
In continuity with the answer above, this will have a detrimental impact on the community as I am not giving them the best conducive environment that they deserve. Similarly either of the extremes may result in a situation of bad leadership among fellow leaders I.e it would either lead to a dominating personality or one that struggles being assertive. Hence the best outcome at not be received. What comes under question here and what actually suffers the most is mangement ability
@beyoutofullkalon
Great response!
✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
I think if myself as a 7 Cups leader has an imbalance of expectations and warmth then the community and people I am helping will also be imbalanced, and it will seem like I don't care as much.
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
Having too low of expectations or too little warmth will impact the community because who is going to think you care? They won't. Too low of expectations will make your work and efforts go down hill. Too little warmth is too little care. Warmth in my eyes is care. It will impact how I work with fellow leaders because if I don't have the motivation or expectations then i'm not going to get along with them. I will not be doing things correctly. Which is why it is good to keep people happy :)
@KarmaTheRascal too little warmth is too little care! I am gonna put it above my desk where I am sitting now! Thank you! :)))

What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
Burning out, being stressed,overwhelmed, health complications = all of this plus much more is related to helping people and leading people. I should be in balance, at least. :)
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
1.)Impact on community - much less time spent on this platform or in real life, decreasing in socalizing and 2.)impact on working with fellow leaders - being upset, or not patient with things how they go probably, not cooperating, being unsystematic....? :)
yep... :)
@calmingsun111
Being unsystematic is a good parallel term with the earlier discussion on building systems and not goals. Epic!
@FrenchToastClub
✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
-I would get frustrated with the missed expectations that I put out
-Too much warmth can miss the important growth that needs to happen
A Balance of both should be both productive and supportive, an imbalance would be neither.
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
The community would not grow or be supported through important stages of development
My fellow leaders would feel disconnected and miscommunication or misunderstandings could populate.
@FrenchToastClub
✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
I may feel annoyed when people step over my boundaries and I would struggle to help support the community
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
Having to connect to people requires warmth, especially as a leader and having to little of it can make you seem intimidating. Other leaders may also not wish to communicate with me as much!
@FrenchToastClub
✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
@RainbowRosie
I appreciated your reflection. To be high in expectations and high in warmth does require self-confidence but, as you mentioned, helps our teams feel safe, secure and confident in our ability to lead them. Thank you for sharing your thoughts! ^—^ ⟡
@RainbowRosie
First of all I love the roses (: 🌹
I also really like your answers and think you put answered the questions very clearly and nicely and I totally agree with everything you said😊
@FrenchToastClub
✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
High expectations and low warmth can leave people feeling under-appreciated for their hard work, and this will lead to burnout or low productivity.
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
Too little warmth leaves people feeling unappreciated and resentful, low expectations causes low quality results and then people aren't motivated or proud of the work they've done.
