Course 1, Discussion 4: System vs Goals

Hope December 5th, 2022

Hello Leadership Crew!

Welcome to our 4th discussion in this first course. In today's discussion, we will be talking about systems vs. goals.

To start, please read this post here and watch this video.

The basic argument here is that having a system is better than having a goal. A system is a way of behaving that helps you move towards accomplishing something. A goal is usually and end state that happens after you have accomplished something. I think eating healthy is a good example. A goal might be to lose 10 pounds. In this case, you feel kind of bad about yourself until you hit that goal; and then, once you hit it, you kind of lose the purpose because the goal has been reached. If you relapse and gain wait again, then you fall back into feeling bad about yourself again. Contrast this with a system of eating healthy.

A system might include things like: having a big glass of water prior to each meal; eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, and nuts; not eating after 9pm; and/or doing some level of intermittent fasting. You wouldn't integrate all of these new healthy eating behaviors at once. Instead, you'd gradually introduce one and then another and then another over whatever period of time makes sense. The system enables you to continuously get healthier and healthier. You will eventually reach the goal, but it'll be the byproduct of eating healthy.

This also has implications for 7 Cups as well. We might have goals of having a certain amount of group support messages or 1:1 messages. Those are fine goals to have, but we mostly want to create a system of support where people care for one another and then the natural result is an increased number of messages.

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

Focus on creating healthy habits and sticking to them. My entire life I have kind of just been floating around aimlessly with huge goals but an inability to work towards them. I'm starting small, by making sure I eat breakfast every day and going outside at least once.

✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

  1. Set an alarm in the morning
  2. Change into day clothes ( I tend to stay in jammies whoops)
  3. Use a motivation app that helps me keep track of the system and goals. I've been using the finch app on and off.

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

For me the best system was having one system or ritual which is consistent in my life no matter how much other things might affect it. For me it was meditation and exercising. That got me out of the most things.

✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

First off, learn to prioritize. Not every task deserves a gold star. Some things can wait—like organizing your sock drawer or debating whether pineapple belongs on pizza. Focus on what actually makes a difference, whether it’s leveling up in your career or working on yourself. And, spoiler alert: sometimes you just gotta let the small stuff go (I’m looking at you, unread emails).

Next, build a routine that doesn’t make you want to scream. Consistency is your best friend, but that doesn’t mean turning into a robot. Find a groove that works for you—work hard, learn stuff, and yes, schedule time to binge-watch your favorite show guilt-free. Trust me, it’s all about balance, not burnout.

Finally, reflect and adjust. Life’s like an unscripted movie—you don’t know what’s coming next, so be flexible. Check in with yourself regularly, see what’s working, and if something feels off, don’t be afraid to switch things up. After all, growth is just evolution with a little extra flair.

@kabir22 Great answer kabir, these points must be taken into consideration by everyone, i think the best system, is just sticking to whatever youre doing, as u mentioned consistency is the best friend and prioritizing whats important. I loved how you added your own words into it instead of making it feel like a chore. Job well done!

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
One key system I need to set up in my life is a structured time management system. This system would help me prioritize tasks, allocate time effectively, and maintain a balance between personal and professional responsibilities. By having a well-organized schedule, I can minimize procrastination and ensure consistent progress toward my goals.

✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

  1. Set daily and weekly goals: Breaking larger tasks into smaller, manageable goals helps me stay focused and track progress more easily.
  2. Use a planner or digital tool: Consistently using a planner or app to schedule tasks and deadlines will ensure that I stay on track and hold myself accountable.
  3. Review and adjust regularly: At the end of each week, I’ll review my progress and make any necessary adjustments to my system, ensuring it evolves with my needs and stays effective.

What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

A key system which I need to set up in my life is by showing consistency in whatever I'm doing

What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

Discipline

Motivation and a

Never give up attitude

WillingToHelpU October 1st

A key system I want to set up is a balanced life. I can do this by working to build rest (both physical and mental) into my schedule, adding breaks that support my life across different domains (social, work, education, etc), and working towards physical balance (such as building in time to get exercise when I'm working at my desk, so I'm not sitting for hours straight).

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

I need to study at least 3 hours a day. Exercise for at least 10 minutes. Finish my daily homework and be caught up in everything we learn in school.

✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

Dedication and consistency are key mindsets to gradually grow a new system in my life

I would have a routine in my head, what subjects I would study during those 3 hours, I would exercise during a study break and do my homework daily and revise everything I have learned that day to refresh my memory.

Maebyb October 7th

A key system I could incorporate into my life would be to practice a healthier lifestyle, including eating healthy, exercise and stress reduction.

Three behaviors I could implement would be to exercise three times a week, eliminate junk food, and practice yoga twice a week.

Hey there! We both essentially share the same system in common. I wish you all the very best on your journey of implementing those behaviours and establishing a healthier lifestyle. You got this!

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

I am in need of developing a fitness system. Not only will it help me to develop greater physical strength, endurance and health, but it will also improve my mental well-being significantly.

✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

1. Engaging in yoga in the morning - Doing a light/low-impact workout which involves simple stretches and breath work can allow me to release tension, exhaustion and stress, helping me to set a good mood for the day.

2. Eating well-balanced meals - This involves eating significant portions of nutritious foods such as proteins, fruits, vegetables, carbohydrates, etc,  to obtain the nutrients my body needs to be healthy.

3. Prioritizing 8 hours of sleep - It is essential to establish a proper routine that facilitates getting 8 hours of sleep each night because being well-rested allows me to feel revitalized and improve my mental and physical health.

After implementing the behaviours described above, I can gradually develop my fitness system.

The key system in life is to worry less about the little things and optimize my time more effectively.

The three things I can do is:

Decide if worrying will help my situation?

Prioritize most important things to do first.

Find the positives in every day.
