"Do you see your life as something you create? Or do you see your life as something that is happening to you? ...What are we here for?"
Ikigai (ee-key-guy) is a Japanese concept which combines the terms Iki ("life") and gai ("worth")
When combined - this term may translate to "a reason for being". This form of philosophy is not just about achieving happiness, but cultivating a mindset where one experiences a profound sense of fulfillment and purpose.
At its core, Ikigai explores four central pillars: what one loves (Passion), what the world needs (Vocation), what one can be paid for (Profession) and what one is good at (Mission).
Through the intersection of these four components, individuals can uncover their unique Ikigai which can guide us through serving a life with never-ending satisfaction and meaning. Its harmonises personal passion with professional pursuits whilst creating a balanced existence.
How does this relate to me? Well, I've embarked on a journey of self-fulfilment through my goal in becoming a Psychologist. As this has been a passion of mine since I was a child, it effortlessly embodies my Ikigai through the holistic alignment of what I love, what Im good at, what I can professionally pursue and what the world needs.
Its a simple yet meaningful way to carve our paths ahead.
So what is your passion? What brings you joy in everyday life? What is your dream career? Would the world benefit from your unique gift?

It's great to hear your insights. Thanks for sharing! I'm also passionate about supporting and connecting with others, which brings me much more joy than just my own achievements. Like you guys, I dream of becoming a counsellor or clinical psychologist! I'm so glad to meet people who share similar passions and goals!!
@Renjik8013 Aww thats amazing! I got faith in us that we'll make those dreams happen!!
@YourShouder03 It seems life is both happens to someone and is also created by someone.
Scientifically choice does tip the odds in one's favour, yet only by an extremely small percentage.
That being said, I don't "have" a passion...perhaps sometimes I'm passionate, yet it's not something I can "have". Nor can I nail down a daily joy or dream career.
I don't know enough of the world to be so vain or conceited as to assume I know what it would benefit from, nor can I assume that any of the gifts I may or may not "have" are even mine, gifts or unique in the first place...
@YourShouder03 Thank you for sharing this insightful post on Ikigai! I love how you've highlighted the intersection of passion, vocation, profession, and mission as the pathway to finding true purpose. Your journey towards becoming a Psychologist is truly inspiring and exemplifies the harmony Ikigai brings. For me, my passion lies in helping others and fostering positive change, which I strive to integrate into my career and daily life. Reflecting on these questions helps me stay aligned with my purpose and find joy in the small moments. What a beautiful reminder to seek fulfillment in everything we do!
@YourShouder03 this is a wonderful post ❤️ I think my life's purpose is to be able to create something and live it behind for someone else. If it helps even just one or two people, I think I've succeeded in that mission.
@YourShouder03 It's these types of posts that are right up my alley! :D My main passion had always been to be an RN, of which I have fullfilled. My other passion has been to be a meteorologist. I have, for the most part, accomplished this, but I am always studying the weather and phenomena of it all.
@YourShouder03 Simple acts of kindness and compassion bring me immense joy in everyday life. Seeing someone smile because of a small gesture can brighten my entire day. Building genuine connections with people and fostering a sense of belonging is what truly enriches my life.Even tiny acts of compassion and kindness make me truly content in daily life. A tiny act can make someone smile, and that can make my whole day. What genuinely improves my life is creating meaningful relationships with others and encouraging a sense of belonging.
Becoming a psychologist or psychiatrist is my dream career. I'm interested to the chance to learn more about the complex nature of mental health, delve deeply into the human psyche, and impact people's lives. Through therapy support and direction, my goal is to enable people to transcend their challenges and realize their true potential. More empathy, comprehension, and support for mental health would, in my opinion, be very helpful to the entire planet. Individual psychological well-being can help us build more empathetic, healthy communities. By developing into a knowledgeable mental health professional who can positively influence other people's lives, I hope to contribute to this ideal. My dream career is to become a psychiatrist or psychologist. I'm drawn to the opportunity to delve deep into the human mind, explore the complexities of mental health, and make a tangible difference in people's lives. By providing therapeutic support and guidance, I hope to empower individuals to overcome their struggles and reach their full potential.
