Announcement: Group Mod Challenge

ASilentObserver April 14th, 2021

Hello Moderator Team

I’ve got a challenge for you! Are you ready?

TI8JuJhMxCqKALbIxv5Xk7wWM_271Ba1_cJOMtD_KhgAXwnsWSq-DzoQ0BrbDg32AwKJu7NYG9zMdejTe9ohMlk8NMTZaP8R1tUcQWsXZf15uBBWW5fHZ0yF9J6iMAVXfoVcnyu3

  • Take a look at the communication styles as shown in the image above. Which four of the styles fit your communication style best? Let us know that in the comments below!
  • Find a mod to partner up with to go mod and foster healthy conversation in the chat rooms for half an hour at least 6 times in a two-week span.
  • Observe and take notes on the communication approach of your mod partner and the mod partner will be doing the same for you. (Please note that communication styles and approaches can and will vary and that’s alright!)
  • Participate in the Group Mod Zone Room and compare your notes and share with fellow mods to learn about each others’ communication styles. Also, share the vibe of the room you both were modding to share in the Mod Room. The vibe of the room here means how was the room environment at the start of joining and when you left. You could share it on a scale of 1-10 where 1 would be “Meh” and 10 as “Awesome”.

Your mod partner can be:

  • Any community moderator on shift (just let them know 1-1 before you join as a partner with them on their shift).
  • A fellow community-centered chat room moderator of the same community who could be present at the same time as you will be able to participate in the room.
  • A global moderator who could be present at the same time as you will be able to participate in the room.

To complete the challenge of visiting and moderating the rooms at least six times in a two-week span, your mod partner can be different if the same mod partner can’t be present. If you have more than one partner, you will simply take notes of different mods' communication styles and approaches and share them with them and fellow moderators in the group mod zone.

Every time you complete one session, drop it in the comments of this thread to log your active participation.

The goal of this challenge:

  • Identify your own communication approach in the group dynamics and how it changed/evolved as the situation in the room changed.
  • Identify how having a partner with you changed/ helped to foster a supportive and compassionate environment in the chatroom.
  • What were the challenges? What surprised you? What type of communication approach works best for you?

At the end of this two-week challenge, you will receive information for the next one! And at the end of the quarter, the top 3 chat room moderators who complete all the challenges successfully will be awarded the most prestigious award: Award-Winning Mod!

Criteria of Award-Winning Mod

  • Being passionate about group support chat rooms
  • Being compassionate and engaging with the community members
  • Being professional and ensure the safety of the room
  • Using active listening and de-escalation with all chat participants.
  • Being supportive to the fellow chat room moderators and room supports
  • Being an open-minded communicator
  • Being yourself and having fun while being there in the rooms.

Fun fact! To this day, only 12 chat room moderators have earned this exclusive award! And for extra incentive, every chat room moderator will be awarded 100 cheers per activity they complete.

I am signing up for the challenge and I invite every moderator to accept the challenge too! May we grow together as the best moderators of the community!

Activity #81

Partner: @jovialButterfly6752

Session date: April 27th, 2021

Session time: 11:00pm-12:00am

Room: Member Community Room (Adult)

Notes: You could say this was a three way collaboration. ^_^ Me and Elliot backed up Jovial upon request and helped bring the room back to light hearted chat. We struggled a bit as members continued to talk over our verbal warnings. We managed to redirect the conversation by hosting an icebreaker session. Jovial was a mix of socializer and relator, while I was a mix thinker and relator.

Room: Member Community Room (Adult)

Notes: Grateful to my friends Lin and Elliot for there for me yesterday... I was having a tough time in the MCR but they gave me the support I needed to power through. Also, they reminded me that it's okay to take a break sometimes. It's okay to not be okay.

Me: Socializer and Relator

Elliot: Socializer?

Lin: Thinker and Relator

Session date: April 29th, 2021

Session time: 12:00 a.m. -1p.m.

Room: Sharing Circle

Notes: I was feeling a bit down after a stressful morning trying to moderate in the MCR. @richuyulin was super sweet and offered to back me up during the SC I host weekly on Thursdays. Elliot of course was around - always there at this hour :) A very kind and positive presence in addition to Lin. I felt a lot better about myself after this.

Me: Relator

Elliot: Relator?

Lin: Thinker and Relator

Session date: April 27th, 2021

Session time: 8:00pm-9:00pm

Room: Sharing Circle (Adult)

Notes: Co-modded Member Powered Sharing Circle and helped guided the session to ensure some order was maintained. I think Parker's style might be relator, but I'm not sure. I was a mix of relator and thinker as usual. Thank you for letting me join you on your shift, looking forward to working with you again in the future!

Activity #83

Partner: @CommunityModElliot

Session date: April 28th, 2021

Session time: 1:30am-2:00am

Room: Support Room 24/7 (Adult)

Notes: Co-hosted / co-modded SR check-in and supported members. This session went well which was a nice change of pace compared to the previous activities that posed a challenge. The chat was pretty active but we were still able to support members. Elliot was socializer and I'm a mix between thinker and relator. Thank you for letting me join your shift again!

Activity #84

Partner: @CommunityModCharlie

Session date: April 28th, 2021

Session time: 1:20pm-2:00pm

Room: Sharing Circle (Adult)

Notes: I co-hosted Healthy Habits session with a newbie host who was still learning and guided them along the way, while co-modding the session with Charlie. The session went pretty smoothly and everyone was really supportive! I think Charlie's style might be a mix of thinker and relator during the activity, much like myself. Thank you for letting me join your shift again!

Session date: April 29th, 2021

Session time: 12:00am-1:00am

Room: Sharing Circle (Adult)

Notes: Thank you for inviting me to join you as co-host for this Sharing Circle session. The vibe in the room was honestly amazing. So much love and support from all the participants. I was inspired to host the next session myself. ^_^ I think Jovial's style during the session was a mix of relator and socializer while I was a thinker. Looking forward to working with you again in the future. laugh

Session date: April 29th, 2021

Session time: 12:15am-12:45am

Room: Support Room 24/7 (Adult)

Notes: Hehe. I'm caught multi-tasking again. XD Co-hosted / co-modded SR check-in and supported members. This session went well, session was on the slightly more active side, but we were still able to support members who were there and let them be heard. Elliot was socializer and I'm a mix between thinker and relator. Thank you for letting me join your shift again!

Partner - @CommunityModAlex

Room - Support Room 24*7

Time - 3 am ET

Date - 29th April 2021

Notes - Thankyou for being such a great support in the room , Alex . Support room can use as much back up as possible haha, was fun to support and moderate in the room with Alex ! There were some instances needing verbal reminders and they were very kind with such !

I feel Alex is a good mix of all modding styles , adapting as per room structure, however I felt they were more of a socializer and Thinker for today!

And hehe, thankyou for being so sweeet and telling me I am a perfect mix of all styles as well as kind and caring too !

Was a great experience, looking forward to join in more , during your shifts!

Session time: 1:00am-2:00am

Room: Sharing Circle (Adult) / Support Room 24/7 (Adult)

Notes: And this is the part where I get told I should stop multi-tasking probably... We co-hosted / co-modded Healthy Habits session in Sharing Circle and hosted SR check-in. I would say the sessions went smoothly as everyone supported each other. Elliot was socializer and I'm a mix between thinker and relator. Thank you for letting me join your shift again!
