Cast your vote ! Saving messages in chats & rooms!

Laura December 12th, 2017

Hello Community,

I am here to ask for your feedback on an important topic: messages saved in every 1-1 chat. Many of you have long asked for more saved messages in your conversations and up till now, we have saved only the previous 10 messages in every conversation. This was for anonymity and storage reasons.

However, we are moving over to a new tool that will allow us to store and retrieve messages much more efficiently. As it can be frustrating to lose messages, this tool will allow us to do that. Hooray! Instead of saving messages by count, we will be able to save them by time.

Note: You would still be able to clear the chat log at any time.

This would also allow us the ability to increase the amount of time group support messages are saved.

So here is what we need to know from you! How long would you like to see your messages in a chat or group support to save for before they are automatically deleted?

Please vote on this idea here!

PLEASE CAST YOUR VOTE BY MONDAY, DECEMBER 18th

Speaking from a quality point of view here, as that is my primary concern to any major change within the site.

I have serious reservations about committing to a change like this. The appeal of 7 Cups as a whole is that is is fully anonymous and information is not retained for much time; making it easy for people in uncomfortable/abusive situation, for example, to hide their use of the site but still get the support when needed.

There is a counter argument that you can use the clear chat function, but speaking from experience, that can sometimes make the situation worse as it actively looks like the individual is hiding something; in some cases staging chats as the last "10" and just storing notes on my end is much more effective in protecting those individuals.

This is a system that has worked well across the three years+ it has been around, it's not broken so I really see no reason to change it. As far as retaining group chat information, that just seems unneeded. When you speak to a group of people you're doing it in confidence with those people, leaving it accessible to people a day or two later, may lead to people backing away from group chats as they want some people to know, but other individuals to not find out.

Whichever way this goes, I really hope people in these kinds of situations, who need our support badly, are kept in mind.

As Listener since a few days ago, I din't have much experience at all, so I don't know what would be best.

Anyways I would love to be able to keep some specific messages to have as reference and the whole conversation for at least a few days.

It would be awesome if we could change que name of the menbers, only for ourselves, so it would be easier to identify them.

As a group mod, I think the messages should stick to those who have the badge then they can understand what is going on, and to be able to rely on past messages if a member or listener is still venting about the same issue(s) they are going through. For 1-1 chats, I believe listeners should be able to go back to previous messages, then they can still stay in the loop and not forget anything. Many of us listen to many people, so information can get mixed up.

@NewTotalLovatic I do not think the one to one should stay, however I think its would be a good idea to be able to save a message thats important, but the computer will ask for permission from the sender of the message. It will only stay I feel the sender agrees.

i also think group chats should delete after maybe an hour after the sender sent it.

I think 1-2-1 chat messages should definitly be saved. its good to not only have that record if you have continued chats with a member but also good for listeners to reflect and improve their skills.

Yati2 December 13th, 2017

Its a good idea to keep past messages. It can be done with time limit, like messages can stay for 30 days and after that it wipes out.

Gorbi December 13th, 2017

I really would like to see an option how long the messages stay or the option to let them stay forever. Laso I would really apprechiate if I could delete single messages I sent for both sides.
