Hello everyone,

I wanted to introduce myself as I join this support group. My name is Amy and I am here to listen with compassion and provide empathy and encouragement to all of you who share in this group.

Though I do not have first-hand experience, I have been through difficult times myself and value the support of caring for others. I understand how important it is to have people to talk to, who will listen without judgment and offer hope when times seem bleak.

I hope to be that person for any of you who need an empathetic ear in this group. I am here to listen anytime you need someone who understands what you are going through, even if not from personal experience. I aim to reflect back strength and resilience, to remind you of sources of support, and to share words that lift spirits when needed.

Though we may not meet in person, I consider any of you who open up to me as friends. And I am here for the long-term, as long as you find benefit in the support I provide as a listening member of this community.

Please feel free to share as much or as little as feels comfortable with you. I encourage you all to also provide support for each other, as that is the beauty of groups such as this. But know that I am here specifically to lend an empathetic and compassionate presence whenever you need.

I look forward to interacting with all of you, and to providing whatever source of support I am able. You are not alone!

Wishing you the very best,
Amy

...See more Introverts make up at least a third of the workforce, yet many companies are still optimized for extroverts! But with a few tweaks, workplaces can unleash introverts' unique strengths. While introverts face some challenges at work, they also bring valuable focus, listening skills and fresh perspectives when given the chance to shine in their own way. • Challenge 1: Networking and small talk can be draining for introverts. They prefer meaningful one-on-one interactions. • Strength: Deep focus - Introverts tend to work in a more concentrated manner and be less distractible. They can dive deep into their work for long stretches of time without needing as many breaks. This "focus power" makes introverts ideal for detail-oriented and complex work. • Challenge 2: Introverts need time to gather their thoughts before speaking up in meetings. • Strength: Reflective listening - Introverts innately prefer to listen more than they speak. As a result, they tend to be very good listeners who reflect on what others say and think before offering their perspective. • Challenge 3: Introverts can unintentionally come across as aloof or uninterested. This can lead to misunderstandings about their competence and commitment. • Strength: Introverts' tendency for solitude and internal reflection can spark new ideas and creative insights. They often do their most innovative thinking when left alone to contemplate possibilities and perspectives. Ways companies can better support and leverage introverted employees: 1. Conduct personality assessments to help managers understand their employees' different communication styles and provide training to help team leads interact effectively with introverts. 2. Enable flexible working arrangements where many employees work remotely or non-traditional hours. This permits introverts to do their best work when distractions are at a minimum. 3. Assess and optimize meeting protocols. 4. Implementing soft opt-outs for social events. Let introverted employees choose to attend an event but leave early if needed. 5. Explicitly acknowledge the value of listening, focus and thoughtful contributions. What else could companies do? Comment below with your suggestions!
Validation

...See more A situation happened to me yesterday made me think that it's good to write something as a reminder about validation for myself and anyone who might be interested. Seeking validation from others is a common human behavior that can have both positive and negative effects on our lives. Validation refers to the act of seeking approval or recognition from others for our thoughts, feelings, and actions. While validation can provide a sense of support and encouragement, it can also lead to a reliance on external validation and a lack of self-confidence. One of the primary reasons people seek validation from others is to feel accepted and valued. This is especially true in social situations where we may feel pressure to fit in and be liked by others. When we receive validation, it can boost our self-esteem and make us feel more confident in ourselves and our abilities. However, seeking validation from others can also be a slippery slope. When we rely too heavily on external validation, we may start to doubt ourselves and our own judgment. We may also become overly concerned with what others think of us and lose sight of our own values and beliefs. Another negative consequence of seeking validation from others is that it can be a never-ending cycle. We may feel the need to constantly seek approval and validation from others, which can be exhausting and unsustainable in the long run. This can lead to a lack of self-esteem and a sense of inadequacy. So, what can we do to break the cycle of seeking validation from others? The first step is to become more aware of our own thoughts and feelings. We can start by asking ourselves why we feel the need to seek validation from others and what we hope to gain from it. We can also try to identify any underlying issues that may be contributing to our need for validation, such as low self-esteem or a fear of rejection. Once we are more aware of our own thoughts and feelings, we can start to take steps to build our own self-confidence and sense of self-worth. This can include practicing self-care, setting achievable goals for ourselves, and focusing on our own strengths and abilities. We can also surround ourselves with supportive and positive people who encourage us to be our best selves. Feel free to share any other tips regarding this topic :")

...See more Bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression, is a mental health condition characterized by extreme mood swings. People with bipolar disorder experience periods of both elevated high energy and despairing lows. These mood swings can disrupt a person's thoughts, behavior, feelings, and ability to function normally. The main types of bipolar disorder are bipolar I and bipolar II. Bipolar I involves at least one manic episode, while bipolar II involves at least one hypomanic episode. Manic episodes include periods of elevated energy, impulsivity, and poor decision making. Hypomanic episodes are milder, with increased energy and risk-taking behavior that lasts for several days. Depressive episodes of bipolar disorder involve persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and lack of energy. Thoughts of death or suicide are not uncommon during severe depressive episodes. Individuals may experience interference with their daily activities and relationships. The exact causes of bipolar disorder are unknown. However, it is believed to involve a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. Treatment options include medication, such as mood stabilizers and antipsychotics, as well as psychotherapy. Lifestyle changes like stress management, sleep regulation, and limiting alcohol or caffeine can also help promote stability. Living with bipolar disorder presents many challenges, but it is possible to achieve remission or maintain stable wellness. Connecting with others struggling with similar issues through support groups can help. Accommodations and adjustments may need to be made to work or school environments. A strong support system of family and trusted friends is vital. The key to bipolar disorder management is gaining insight into your condition, sticking with treatment, recognizing triggers, and making self-care a priority. With proper treatment and a commitment to wellness, people with bipolar disorder can live full and fulfilling lives, though it requires diligence and perseverance. Bipolar disorder is a lifelong condition, but it can be managed effectively.

...See more Chronic depression refers to long-term major depression that persists for prolonged periods of time. People with chronic depression experience ongoing symptoms of deep sadness and hopelessness that severely impact their day to day life and functioning. Some key symptoms of chronic depression include: • Persistent feelings of sadness, sorrow and worthlessness. The depressed mood exists for most or all of the time, disrupting enjoyment of life and activities once loved. • Severe loss of interest in hobbies, social activities and other pursuits that were once enjoyable or meaningful. Lack of motivation and energy to engage in any activities. • Low self-esteem and confidence. Negative thoughts dominate, criticizing oneself, life circumstances and the future. • Difficulty concentrating and making decisions. Chronic worry and rumination are common. • Insomnia or excessive sleeping. Appetite changes, either weight loss or weight gain. • Chronic pain or physical health issues. Some people develop health issues in response to long-term stress and inflammation caused by the depression. Living with chronic depression poses many challenges and obstacles: • Difficulty maintaining relationships and social connections. Social withdrawal is common. • Problems with work or school performance, including inability to meet job demands or struggle in educational pursuits. • Risk of suicide thoughts and behaviors. Chronic depression increases the risk of suicidal ideation. • Medical issues. Long-term stress and health issues may arise, requiring ongoing management and treatment. Coping with chronic depression requires an ongoing commitment to self-care and wellness strategies. This includes: • Treatment such as therapy (CBT, mindfulness, interpersonal), medication, journaling or support groups. • Engaging in regular exercise like walking, yoga or strength training. Exercise releases feel-good hormones that help boost mood. • Eating a healthy, balanced diet. Staying hydrated and limiting alcohol and caffeine. • Getting enough sleep and practicing relaxation techniques before bed. • Spending time with a support network of people who encourage a positive outlook. • Maintaining hope through small accomplishments and acts of kindness each day. Recovery may be long-term, but coping skills make it possible to enjoy life again. While chronic depression can be difficult to overcome, many people are able to reach a place of improved well-being and meaningful happiness in their lives again. Developing resilience and learning to better manage symptoms is a lifelong process, but it is absolutely possible. With the right treatment, coping strategies, self-care and a strong support system, chronic depression can become manageable instead of debilitating. Though joy may be hard to imagine when immersed in deep depression, it is still there to be discovered. Keep taking it day by day, be kind to yourself, accept help when you need it, and remember that this difficult time is only temporary. There are brighter days ahead, even if you can't see them yet. Keep going, keep hoping, and never stop believing in your ability to heal and thrive once more. Recovery from chronic depression is often slow, but steadfast commitment will get you there. You are not alone. Sorry if my posts are too long, I'm just trying to cover everything related to the topic.

...See more Loneliness is a painful feeling that no one deserves to experience. However, loneliness is something many people struggle with at some point in their lives. Here are some tips to help overcome loneliness: • Practice self-care. Make sure you are exercising, eating healthy meals, engaging in hobbies and activities that you enjoy, and allowing yourself to unwind. Take good care of your physical and mental health. • Connect with others. Reach out to family and friends, even if it's just sending a text to say hello. Call or make plans to meet up with people in your life that support you. Volunteering is also a great way to feel connected to a bigger purpose and meet like-minded people. • Set small social goals. Don't make grand plans to overhaul your social life overnight. Set small, manageable goals, like starting a conversation with one new person per day or committing to one social engagement per week. Build from there. • Challenge negative self-talk. It is easy to be overly self-critical when lonely, but work on replacing negative thoughts with more constructive ones. Remind yourself of your good qualities and strengths. Talk to yourself with encouragement. • Pursue new hobbies and interests. Exploring fresh activities exposes you to new people and opportunities. Take a class on something that interests you, join a local club, or explore meetups to find people with similar interests and passions. • Stay positive. Loneliness is often temporary, even if it feels unbearable in the moment. Maintain an optimistic outlook. Happier days are ahead, even if you cannot see them yet. There are always things to look forward to. • Seek professional help if needed. If you are having trouble overcoming loneliness on your own, consider seeing a therapist. Speaking to a counselor can provide support and advice for your specific situation. Remember, you matter and there are always people and resources to help you. Do not give up hope. Happier and more fulfilling days are within your reach. Stay strong, keep putting one foot in front of the other, and believe in yourself. You've got this.
