Bio
Since I was a little girl, I have had a desire to help heal people. Whether it was family members, friends, strangers, or even animals, I felt the inner fire within me to care for others. Starting in middle school, my friends would come to me with their problems, and I would try and help them through it. My desire to guide others galvanized in middle school when my grandfather, who had suffered a stroke, came to live with us. I would help him walk and would assist his nurses with his feeding and therapy. I was so interested in the care he required, and I began to develop a deep connection and appreciation of the healthcare professionals who tended to him. In high school, I volunteered at the Sarah Neumann Nursing Home with the hopes of presenting a young face and an animated soul to seniors who I felt often needed extra love and attention. Years later, I watched a loved one experience the unraveling effects of an addiction. I watched him undergo the different treatment programs at a rehabilitation facility, attended support groups, and met with his counselors. I witnessed the compassion and dedication of the health care professionals, with whom I am eternally thankful for, as he is now celebrating 5 years of sobriety. One summer I worked as a nurse’s aide at a rehabilitation center, where I was assigned patients who had suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). I found a serenity helping those patients who needed care the most. The very next summer, I volunteered at an animal shelter, assisting with the walking and caring for rescued dogs. As I grew older, the fire within me began to further spread; I not only wanted to help those around me, but also became concerned for those around the world. In 2017, when Hurricane Harvey took a toll on Texas, my immediate thoughts and reactions were that I wanted to get to those suffering and provide immediate help. Furthermore, throughout my time at The Rory Meyers College of Nursing (NYU), I worked numerous hospital shifts and attended countless simulations, in which I worked with mannequins and actors and was exposed to a variety of clinical situations. Moreover, for my Acute Psychiatric Nursing course (different than the physical ailments we focussed on in prior simulations), had actors who served as our patients, in which we role played differing psychiatric situations. And now with COVID-19 devastating the world, there is a loud cry for help from people. People are suffering, and the need by people for attention to their health has only become more urgent. Health awareness and services have always been necessary, but during this pandemic, it seems more pressing than ever. I want to be the light for people when they are ill, afraid, and/or feeling alone.
