Site scrolling "Sticky" with firefox and opera on PC

DavidEss March 13th, 2021

A bit of a rant, after a difficult long chat made more difficult by the software.

Over the past couple of weeks I've noticed that messages don't appear in the main window quickly on my PC ( they seem to come in the left sidebar area first. The main window doesn't scroll properly, I often can't go back to re-read messages - (particularly unhelpful are the many listener prompts which I never read but just push everything else up the page) and quite often I can't read recent messages without refreshing the page, opening in a new window, etc.

Working with text chat is difficult enough without things getting in the way of the flow.

I'm sure it will be fixed eventually, hopefully soon, but it speaks volumes that no-one's posted a thread about it here.

@DavidEss I've been seeing that happen intermittently for a long time, but I suspect it got worse recently.

A member I was chatting to yesterday complained to me about it, thinking (of course) that it was just their computer.

And I had been thinking it was just my computer, because I make some custom modifications in the conversation page. For example, I remove those annoying "tips".

The conversation page is tricky for web developers because on touch screens it has to adjust for the possibility that a keyboard might appear or disappear at any time. My guess is that someone was trying to fix a touch screen bug and messed it up, but that's purely a guess.

I think experience has shown that there is no reason to believe discussing a bug here in the forum will make it any more likely to be fixed, soon or ever. The formal way to report a bug (in case anyone is wondering) is to Submit a request.

I agree with you that this bug is making chats more difficult. Perhaps @EvelyneRose knows more?

Nope, you're spot on! They can submit a bug report to the form and IT will look into it!

I've submitted a report.

Part of the difficulty is, I'm sure, caused by the need for confidentiality that is built in to this site. I notice that the bug report, and some other stuff on here, uses Google Forms. Google aren't well known for their emphasis on user confidentiality. I have no idea if that matters, but just saying.

@DavidEss Confidentiality? The entire site, including 1-to-1 chats, has built-in connections to Google and other business partners.

To verify this in Firefox or Opera on a PC, either right-click this page or press Ctrl+U to see the page source. The top two preconnect links are Google servers, and there's a third Google server further down. In the page source, press Ctrl+F and find mail — you'll see that your e-mail address and approximate age in years are being made available for business partners to track.

Using Google Forms doesn't make this situation any worse. In fact, as Google forms are only tracked by Google and not by any of the other business partners, in that sense they are more secure.

And, for what it's worth, our Help Center isn't run by Google. It's run by a company called Zendesk.

@RarelyCharlie

OK, so, I'm a bit out of touch when it comes to scripting webpages lol. I found my email address, and age lol, but I couldn't find yours, so I guess it's not so bad as I had first thought.

I use ublock origin as an extension on Firefox, which blocks a load of trackers on this and every other site, so good luck with that, Google.

Not that I'm much of a target for advertising nowadays.
