Experiences. We all have different experiences when it comes to any situation. With experience comes perspective. For self-harm, in particular, it may mean various things for different people. For some, it's a way of coping with difficult emotions. For others, self-harm is a way for one to feel any emotion. But with all experiences come positives and negatives. Let's try to remember the positive but frame it in a healing way.

For me personally, self-harm and recovery have taught me to focus on myself and my own wellbeing, while ignoring the harshness of others around me. It's taught me that self-harm awareness and education need to improve, and my own journey has helped me help others in a meaningful way. However, self-harm had initially made me more fragile to the words and spite of others who didn't understand.

1. How are you today? Is there anything you'd like to talk about?
Numb. Very numb. Can't feel emotions. I am faking being normal- I am just not. I am lost- I am nowhere. And when I do feel emotions I am anxious, scared and/or angry. And maybe guilt.
Currently I am not feeling emotions- I think I may be dissociating. Having memory gaps- I want to get help but I know I can't. Anyways- I hate this headache, but maybe numb is better than anxious.

2. How has self-harm positively impacted your life? How has self-harm negatively impacted your life?
Positive impact- helped me manage emotions, kept me alive in times of crisis. Outlet, coping mechanism. Means of survival
Negative impact- scars, guilt, shame and isolation. Loneliness- if I didn't tell anyone I thought I was faking who I am, and ofc I can't tell people

3. Let's tone the post down a little with a very out-f-the-blue question! What's your favourite breakfast food?
*thinks* Thanks to motivation issues I don't even feel like eating or having water (though I do eat regularly)...so hard question. But maybe something light like chocolate pancakes

Hello, Fed. It sounds like you’re feeling lost in the void of emotions. It sounds like emotions may be overwhelming, and so numbness and dissociation is your brain’s subconscious coping mechanism. I’m sorry to hear that- it sounds quite difficult to have to bear with constantly. Especially thinking we can only deal with it ourselves. That’s a lot of pressure to put on ourselves. Just a reminder that you can seek professional help. Always know your options.

Those are great positive and negative impacts. Self-harm can be a mechanism to keep us alive- most of the time, it is, rather than what the general public think.

Chocolate pancakes sound delicious. I’m glad to hear you’re still eating regularly and staying hydrated. I hope over time when you start to feel better, you can start to enjoy the simple pleasures of food again.

It's true- I really can't feel emotions so this is kind of like a new coping mechanism. It is a subconscious thing for me to dissociate a lot to escape everything for a while- mentally. I like this one since it doesn't harm my body physically, but it seems more distressful than sh. That's because I can't focus anywhere because of this.
Nothing comes easy- emotions are hard, but not having emotions leads to extreme motivation issues...I don't even want to do any of the things I love.
I hope one day I am able to really enjoy chocolate pancakes...and yeah sh is very misunderstood.
And sadly I can't reach out to a professional for atleast an year. If I could I would have long back. I wouldn't have put myself through all this if there was another way for me. I mean no one would sh or suffer knowing there is a way out.

Hello, Vang! That’s fair- it can seem scarier to say what we think out loud. It can feel more real and more distressing. I hope you’ll find a way to vent- in a journal, perhaps. As for anxiety, what are you worried about? It’s good that you acknowledge your emotions.

It’s good you recognise both sides of the story, despite it not being great.

Yum, that sounds delicious. I need to try it- anything with cheese is delicious!

I feel socially drained I went to this new place that I never went to.
Self-harm has positively changed my life by keeping my emotions mellow and by knowing my own body frame. The negative part is knowing since I did what I did I have to wake up with scars.
My favorite breakfast food is toast with peanut butter and chocolate milk.

Actually today I am pretty good, thank you! Just want to share with y'all my positivity since I feel so happy and so extremely relieved <3 I will take today and tomorrow a pretty good day to rest and take selfcare!

In all honesty, I can't see any positive impact on my life from selfcare actions, but only negative ones. Though it went by my life pretty unseen (I guess), I was just numb, sad, stressed, crying and so on...It was terrible time, but I am so happy to be strong from the last check (it was so long time ago!)

Cinnamon cereals with milk and Belvita cookies, and also tea/juice to drink - give me that and I am good to go!

Self-harm has shown you how you can reach the bottom and still go up and be where you are now. That’s a positive. It’s proof that you can be in a dark place and come out of it happier. It’s proof you can make a comeback.

Yum, Belvita biscuits!! Never had cinnamon cereal though.
