"Safety is an ongoing conversation"

June 27th
...See more I was having a chat with @PetiteSouris about the power of education in online safety and it got me thinking about how I view safety as an ongoing conversation. I think one of the most effective methods we have for keeping ourselves safe online is to be talking to each other, sharing experiences, lessons learned, and wisdom from our own research and experiences with safety. Some of have extensive experience, and others are still figuring out how to navigate the wide world of the internet, including 7 Cups. We prioritize safety, given the nature of our platform, and we want to empower everyone to take control of theirs. We can do this by sharing what we know! Here's where you come in: Please share some tips you've picked up on keeping yourself safe, especially as it relates to our community. There's no overcommunicating when it comes to upholding safety so let's keep talking!

...See more Hello and welcome to the Teen Safety Series [https://www.7cups.com/forum/safe7cups/TeenSafetyTips_2661/IntroducingtheTeenSafetyTipsCampaign_325452/]. In today’s post, we will be learning one more step. At 7 Cups, we believe everyone deserves a safe and supportive space to connect.  That simply means giving you the power to control your experiences. If you are feeling uncomfortable in a chat/ group chat? You don't have to. You can shape your experiences. We offer a couple of handy tools to help you feel comfortable and in control. * Block Button:  In 1-1 chat with a listener, if a listener's behavior makes you feel uneasy, you can block them with a single click. This will prevent them from contacting you again. Listeners can utilize the same in case a member’s behavior is not respectful or appropriate.  * Mute Button: In the group support chats, sometimes you might just need a break from a conversation. The personal mute function allows you to hide messages from specific members/listeners without leaving the room entirely. Also, you can report/ block them if their behavior is causing discomfort to you.  Please know, you are in control of your experiences. And, please don't hesitate to use these tools to create a positive and comfortable experience for yourself.  We are here with you to support you in taking charge of your well-being on 7 Cups. Here are a few more steps you can take: Report inappropriate behavior: If something makes you feel unsafe, please report it through the "Report an issue" [https://help.7cups.com/hc/en-us/requests/new/] link.    Take breaks: It is okay to step away from a chat or group chat if you need some time for yourself. Focus on positive interactions: Seek out listeners who make you feel supported and understood. Please know we are here for you. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to us for any support. And, let's work together to make 7 Cups a welcoming and supportive space for everyone.  ------------------------- Did you check out Tip #1 & #2? Safety Patrol Outreach Team - FAQ [Updated July 2024]

...See more Hello, all! 🌞 Due to the recent revamp of the Safety domain, we thought it would be a good idea to create a frequently asked questions (FAQ) post. There are currently 3 Safety branches within the Safety Team; Safety Patrol, Safety Outreach, and Safety Discussions. Training for Safety Patrol is mandatory in order to join either SO or SD. If you have a question about any safety team that isn't answered in this post, please feel free to ask it in this thread - I will be updating the post with new questions every so often, so keep checking back! Here are the most common questions we receive; 🌞 What do the Safety Teams do? ST has 3 branches - patrol, outreach and discussions. * Patrol Branch: flagging profiles that break site rules. * Outreach Branch: messaging users with minor, fixable profile violations to give them a chance to adhere to site rules before being flagged. * Discussion Branch: conducting discussions in forums/chat rooms to spread safety awareness! 🌞 What's the overall purpose of ST? SPOT has an important role within the 7 Cups community. We aim to increase the site's safety by enforcing site rules as diplomatically as possible. Our purpose is to encourage a safe, supportive, and caring environment for every 7 Cups user. If you ever have any kind of safety concern, please do not hesitate to contact @Rebekah, @tommy [https://www.7cups.com/@tommy], @EvelyneRose or @Heather225. We truly care about your 7 Cups experience and we want you to feel as safe as possible. 🌞 What are the basic duties of each branch? Safety Patrol; flagging profiles that go against site rules, as and when possible! Safety Outreach; sending messages to users with fixable profile violations! Safety Discussion; conducting safety discussions in forums or chat rooms! **More information on each branch is available via their individual application forms** 🌞 Who leads ST? Current ST leaders are @Rebekah and @tommy [https://www.7cups.com/@tommy]. @EvelyneRose is our admin oversight. 🌞 Who else is on the team? At present, our team members are; @Rebekah, @tommy, @EvelyneRose, @AnnaSilverberg, @Rui002, @LightsFromDark, @izzyy528, and @KindnessMatters2020! 🌞 We are always recruiting. Please consider joining ST if you meet the criteria to join! 🌞 What are the requirements to join Safety Patrol/Outreach/Discussion? ✔️ Verified Listener (apply here [https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1xVRwAc-afFGsFOp4pkJ06FzCig6CW4s4FLzJxpMcALY/viewform?edit_requested=true])* ✔️ Member of Safety Patrol for 2+ months* (apply here [https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeiPkuyjGZs7x2NY5b1tgkO5QoRRiXzFFobMpHiWthKUxgaKg/viewform]) ✔️ Completion of AL1 and AL2 (apply here [https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1wG5popRr-lrfhUc8AoZh-QTMR5QM0Flp3bJlkVROZr8/viewform] and here [https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1Soxc6LUlaD95FEVzYm68iD58SprAw3ypmMeDsZ5qS30/viewform], respectively) ✔️ Completion of AL3 and AL4 within 1 month of joining SPOT (apply here [https://docs.google.com/forms/d/10I-zOYhAOP8kzPEL9mJG8fqcjusGDOfN_sdctFkvrNI/viewform] and here [https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1iQij6bcTDa4qoAZVOZaBukkDptqKm3sfXTu2ucN6ToQ/viewform], respectively) *To join SP, you ONLY need to be a Verified Listener. The other requirements do not apply. *MENTORS can apply after 1 month of being on Safety Patrol. 🌞 What's the difference between Safety Patrol (SP) and Safety Outreach? Safety Patrol members are able to flag profiles that have any kind of profile flag violation, whereas SO members are able to message users with profile flag violations to offer a chance to change the issue before flagging. Safety Patrol members cannot do this. Read here [https://www.7cups.com/forum/SafetyKnowledgeat7Cups_181/SafetyPatrolTeam_1685/SafetyPatrolSPandtheSafetyPatrolOutreachTeamSPOT_265908/] for more information! 🌞 Who can I contact with questions about ST? Any of the team leaders! 🌞 Who can safety patrol members contact about safety concerns? Any of the team leaders or @Heather225! 🌞 Who can non-safety patrol members contact about safety concerns? As before, any of the team leaders or @Heather225! 🌞 Where can I apply? Safety Patrol ---> here [https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeiPkuyjGZs7x2NY5b1tgkO5QoRRiXzFFobMpHiWthKUxgaKg/viewform]! Safety Outreach and Safety Discussion ---> here [https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc_sl_D41d4ihTDebx8m_6MFFf0C57_ArzPl1B_5rjev3oIrw/viewform]! 🌞 I'm not a member of SO but I'd like to message users and tell them to remove things from their profiles. Can I do this, please? Simply put, no. Messaging users to rectify their profiles is strictly prohibited, unless you are a ST - Outreach Branch member. ONLY members of ST - Outreach Branch are able to contact users. This is due to team members receiving training specifically for outreaching. Discussion Branch team members are also not permitted to outreach users. 🌞 I was messaged by a SO member. What should I do? Please act in accordance with the SO member's message. If you have a violation on your profile, the best thing to do is to remove it. This will save your profile from being flagged. Should you respond, please be respectful and polite. Abuse toward SO members is simply not tolerated. 🌞 Can I be on all branches of ST, please? Unfortunately, not at this time. You can only be on the Discussion Branch or the Outreach Branch. Being on Safety Patrol is mandatory in order to join SO or SD, so, in theory, a user can only be a part of 2 branches at any one time -- SP and SO, or SP and SD. 🌞🌞🌞 Thank you for reading! As aforementioned, please feel free to comment any questions you may have that were not addressed in this post. 🌞 PPC (Primary Points of Contact) 🌞; - Ambassador & SPOT Leader: Rebekah [https://www.7cups.com/@Rebekah] - ML & SPOT Leader: tommy [https://www.7cups.com/@tommy] - Admin: EvelyneRose [https://www.7cups.com/@evelynerose]
Safety Online - a discussion for Safer Internet Day!
by MistyMagic

...See more Heyy! Welcome Everyone! Misty Here! Today is Safer Internet Day. I have held two, really informative and interesting discussions, one for teens and one for adults, and the information was so fantastic I wanted to share it with you here, so that those of you who couldn't attend could still learn more about being safer online the same as we have. So the first icebreaker question was "How long have you had a mobile phone and when did you get your first mobile phone?" Answers were very interesting with some of us having had mobile phones that were as big as a brick! over 25 years ago! Next we discussed what being 'online' meant and when might we be 'offline'? Here we had some very interesting answers, and we learnt that even when we don't answer our texts or messages and are actually signed out, our technological instruments, smart phones, routers, modems, smart tvs etc, might actually still be online! We found out about ‘Parental Controls and who uses them? - Parental controls are available on almost all devices, modems, phones, tvs computers, tablets; they can be used to block websites, or to limit the amount of time online or the channels that can be seen on a tv! They are designed to make the internet a safer place, so please investigate using them if you havent already. We also found out that some businesses and universities and schools didn't allow wifi and some blocked certain sites on the internet. Then we asked who uses social media and who posts on their social media sites and page about their holidays, telling everyone when they will be away, and where they are going etc? This led to a lot of us talking about what is a real 'friend' and who we should make sure that any information is only shared with real people that are real friends and that we should be very careful about posting information. Why is it important that we dont share any personally identifying information on 7Cups? This led to a lot of great answers! People may mis-use the information and contact us. They may not be who they say they are. They may sell our contact information to others. When we are anonymous we are far safer. Did you know that ‘password ‘ is the most common password! How might we make a safer password? We also discussed if longer is stronger! There were some really interesting thoughts on this from using a latin swear word to using lots of numbers! Using Capital letters and a mix of numbers 12345 and ?! $%& @Power has already written a great thread on passwords Here [https://www.7cups.com/forum/SafetyKnowledgeat7Cups_181/KeepingyourselfsafeAnnouncements_1373/Howstrongisyourpassword_181164/] How strong s your password. Security Questions - many sites use security questions to reset passwords, how can we make them safer and hard to guess? Instead of using the correct answer to create a security question give the wrong information so that makes it harder to guess and steal. For instance if the question is What is your mothers maiden name instead of answering correctly use something else like your favourite colour. What more can be done to stop people treating 7cups as a Dating App

...See more This is a well-known as well as a criticial issue. I know Safety Patrol team is at place, filters are at place, to help ensure positive environment on 7cups, yet it seems more is required to make 7cups a healthier place. So I am inviting suggestions - What more can be done to prohibit the use of 7cups for dating/sexting purposes. This problem perhaps cannot be 100% solved, but the best we can do is to look to minimize it. Thus, inviting your valuable suggestions. Feel free to tag your wise friends @DonaldDraper
