The first 3 conversations helped us set the foundation for this discussion. The idea that the problem is the path or the obstacle is the way comes from the Stoics. If interested, I also recommend this book as a good overview of stoic thinking. I think there is a tremendous amount of wisdom in these ancient ideas. I'm glad to see much of it resurfacing now. ÃÃÂ
This disucssion is the most important discussion in this course. This is the core insight to learn for your own personal and professional development as well as the key insight that will continue to help us grow and evolve at 7 Cups. Please really take your time to think through these ideas. They matter and they are meaningful. These ideas can help change the trajectory of your life.

1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread.
I learned that problems help us face our denial and combat against it so that we can become the best version of ourselves and work through it. I also learned that problems help us connect with other people because as social creatures, we want to help other people and feel connected with others. This makes the world a better place if we are helping each other out and making sure we all feel seen and supported. The third thing I learned is that problems benefit us in the long run. We can see those problems and learn from them through our mistakes. It can also help other people not make the same mistakes as you.
2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book The Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
Perception- How we view/see things and what we tell ourselves.
Action- what actions we take in our lives whether it’s through solving problems or facing hardships
Will- embracing that we can’t control some things and we should fully accept this and even love that

What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread. 1) A concept, idea, or thought has an outcome all dependent upon how we frame this situation. We can choose to have a positive look on it or a negative look - that is up to each of us individually. 2) A very important part of framing is that when our problems approach we hide. Hiding doesn’t make anything easier though. The problems will just linger and become a bigger problem. Again, it is up to us to make the decision of what to do. 3) Asking for help is an acceptable thing to do. As I said in the previous post, none of us are perfect. We want to be seen as this hero who can handle everything on our own but in reality we can’t. We start to crack and eventually break open and explode. Asking for help doesn’t mean defeat but strength. Strength that only you control.
Video:
-
Perception: Whatever we see something as it becomes (i.e. See the camping trip going bad = rain put fire/heat source out
-
Action: A response to the problem
-
Will: Looking at the uncontrollable factors - building strength and understanding there is someone greater than us.
@GlenM
1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you.?
1.) Those who have gone through many problems/are going through problems are significantly more emotionally intelligent than those who haven't. This is because being isolated from pain carves you out to be someone who doesn't know how it feels—so you don't know or have the want to help someone else.
2.) We learn from problems. They help us 'level' up in life. From pain, we get experience.
3.) Problems teach us vulnerability and enable us to ask for help. It unites us together.
2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
1.) Perception: The way we see things, the way we interpret them.
2.) Action: The paths we can take after receiving the perception.
3.) Will: To accept things that aren't under our control and accept that they are not something we can change.
@milkoreos
we do learn through dealing with life's challenges and failures.

Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
- Problems are more like an oppotunity/opportunities to work in a different way or try a different part.
- The way we view the problem(s) matters a lot. (Perspective)
- Some things are not in our control, all we can do is stay true to ourselves and face the obstacle/situation/problem.
@Hope2103
It is not an easy thing to identify but it is certainly doable.

Problems are like little disguised gold nuggets. Nobody likes dealing with problems because they are painful. However, when you do focus on them – open to them, accept them, and solve them – you are rewarded with new insight and growth. One, problems break down our denial. Two, they free us from the distraction systems. Three, they teach us to ask for help. Four, they help us level up. Five, they teach us how to authentically care for other people.
Problems as “continuous self-improvement”. Solving problems changes you. It helps you realize that you are stronger than you realized
Problems teach you compassion like nothing else does

1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread.
1- Problems break you out of distraction systems: Facing your problems directly spares a lot of time and suffering. It will prevent you from being involved in another distraction system.
2- Problems teach us to ask for help: There are certain problems that we need to ask for help or atleast to get someone else's opinion. In the end you'll be the person who's tackling the problem, but a little bit of help and support is what makes you confident and help you get out of the problem soon.
3- Problems help us to improve ourselves and level up: Facing a problem head on and dealing with them saves up a lot of time of distractions and denial and it teaches us to believe in ourselves. Imagine going through a problem alone and finally getting out of it. You'll be free, happy and proud of yourself for the strength you had when dealing with them. It'll give you valuable insights and will make you be more confident of yourself.
2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.
Perception - This means the way you see the problem. If one looks at a problem as a bad thing and as it is the end of the world, the problem in reality would become horrible. However, if you look at the problem in a more positive way the problem itself would become simpler and achievable.
Action - This means doing something about the problem. Instead of thinking how bad the problem is and grieving on what disaster it could bring one can think of ways to solve the problem in a creative way.
Will - This simply means understanding that there are certain things that we can’t control. For instance the way another person reacts or talks to us is not in our hands. We can do nothing about it as that’s the behavior or attitude of that person. However, we can control how we respond to those things and that makes a big difference.
@bubblingBreeze14
You have clearly identified all the points. Well-said
