The first 3 conversations helped us set the foundation for this discussion. The idea that the problem is the path or the obstacle is the way comes from the Stoics. If interested, I also recommend this book as a good overview of stoic thinking. I think there is a tremendous amount of wisdom in these ancient ideas. I'm glad to see much of it resurfacing now. ÃÃÂ

This disucssion is the most important discussion in this course. This is the core insight to learn for your own personal and professional development as well as the key insight that will continue to help us grow and evolve at 7 Cups. Please really take your time to think through these ideas. They matter and they are meaningful. These ideas can help change the trajectory of your life.

Here are the questions:

1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you.

1) Problems are a blessing disguise and shouldn't be seen as a hinderence but embraced instead

2) to actually be authentic and true when caring for people

3) Problems make us conscious and they decrease our own personal denial

2. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.

perception- the way we see a problem, if we take it as a negative then we will not learn from it instead see it as an opportunity to learn and grow

action- How we actually act to solve the problem, what are we going to do to change the situation that we are currently in and how can we prevent it happening again?

Will- the acceptance of the things that we cannot control nor change, and embracing it with open arms and focusing on the things that we can change.

Well for me I uncovered that problems, circumstances need to be handled gracefully. The cycle of understanding, accepting, working, and resolving any problem is a fine learning curve.

Acceptance counters denial which helps us understand and act open.

The strength needed to resolve problems - That does make us strong and ready to take on even bigger problems.

Going through any circumstance makes us humble and more empathetic towards the people going through a problem

2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video. ÃÃÂ

1. Perception - It's the first aspect of our response to any issue coming into our life. The initial response must be right and as wide as possible.

2. Will - It's not always easy but somehow it's important to have the will to do what it takes. It's important to have the heart and strength in right place.

3. Action - The outcome of our perception and will is the step we take and the action we perform. Having the moral center, it's necessary to believe in the action we perform.

2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video. ÃÃÂ

The first key point is that the only solution to break denial and distraction is to face the problem and come down with a solution. The second key point is Problems are beneficial. They help you to learn more and changes your perception. They make you stronger. The third key point is the cycle- not only will one solve a problem but also become compassionate and help others. Problems connect people before and after problems.

The first component would be perception- This means, what are your intentions? Because your mind can adapt and adjust but what do you believe? Obstacles can be overcome by your perception or mindset.

The second component would be the obstacle is the path. This mean that obstacles are really opportunities. Many great women and men such as Mahatma Gandhi have overcome the obstacles and became an important figure.

The third component would be the strategy- Perception, Action and Will. It all comes together.

1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread. ÃÃÂ

-Problems break us out of distraction systems: They never let our minds rest until we have dealt with them.

-Problems help us level up: Problems come bouncing towards us. They pop and open up a puzzle. If we solve the puzzle, then we unlock the key we need in life for the next level. Otherwise, life will keep bouncing the same problem bubble our way until we solve it.

-Problems teach us in life to ask for help whenever required: It reminds us that we are social creatures and we need one another to get through this life.

2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book The Obstacle is the way... In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video. ÃÃÂ

- If we try not to control what happens to us but instead control our responses in any given situation - it leads to an opportunity.

- Perception: Both positive & negative perception molds our future. If we see our problem as an unending wave of failure - we can never move forward to take action against it. If we see our problem as stepping stones towards success - problem-solving becomes way too easy. In the end, it is all about our perception.

- Action: Recognizing what must be done to overcome our problems & take appropriate action towards it.

- Will: We need to accept & embrace the fact that we cannot change everything.

1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread.

First is that problems are teachers – we can use them as learning opportunities. Second is that life is like a video game: if we do not learn what we were meant to learn from this problem or challenge, we will see this problem again in some similar form. Third is that problems break us out of denial. It is hard to avoid reality when we have a genuine need and we may need to ask for help.

2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.

He says the way to turn the obstacle into the path is by perception, action, and will. Perceive the situation accurately, act appropriately, and strengthen the will to overcome and continue.

1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread.

1.) Problems are gifts. They can have disguised value, and can be very helpful and should be treasured.

2.) Problems reach you to ask for help. (I loved this point especially!) They teach you humanity, and teach you that handling on your own isn't an option. I feel like this could strengthen relationships, and decrease the stereotypes around asking for help.

3.) Problems help you level up. They help you move forward, and can show you that you are stronger than you realized.

2. Watch this overviewvideoby Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.

1.) Perception: how we look at/view the world, and at problems. Do we see it in a negative way, or as an opportunity? The story you tell yourself about that thing can really impact on what thing will be.

2.) Action: what do we do, or how do we react to the problem? How do we face the problem, to try and solve it? You can respond with creativity and persistence and ingenuity, and using what you have to the best of your ability.

3.) Will: Looking at the things that we cannot control, and accepting it, and then working on building inner strength.

1. What are 3 key points from Chapter 4 that stand out to you. Please post them in this thread.

Asking for help. I have struggled in this area and usually wait to ask for help if the problem becomes too much and I am drowning and still feel bad. Every time I look back, I realize the problems could have been resolved quicker and easier if I did ask for help sooner.

Level up. This I do believe in. I believe our problems help make us wiser and able to handle other issues that cross our paths later on in life.

I also believe those that have struggled a lot often have more empathy and understand toward others. If you have experienced different pain and such in life, when you hear others struggling, it is easier to understand and have empathy for all different types of issues others go through. Our struggles may look different, but still have the similar feelings and such.

2. Watch this overview video by Ryan Holiday on his book the Obstacle is the way.. In your own words, please identify and describe the 3 key components he outlined in the video.

1. Perception objective judgement-how we view the problem, we cannot control what happens to us (external forces), but we can control how we respond to what happens us (internal forces).

2. Action-now at this very moment what are we going to do with the problem, and respond with optimism, creativity, and persistence.

3. Will-what do we do about not able to control things that are bigger than us. Now at this very moment. Understanding the larger picture.

windSpirit March 11th, 2021

@Containedchaos you indeed put a beauty into this. Those who were in pain are really more empathetic and open to helping others. "Now at this very moment" was a short but an exact pinpoint to "right here, right now" - what is really inportant for me. Understanding a larger picture a bit differs from "undertanding that there are things bigger than us", because second sounds a bit dismantling but it is still completely fine. Makes me understand it better.
