Course 3, Discussion 4: One Key Metric
It is pretty easy to get knocked off track in life. One way to stay on track is to have a core metric that guides you. If you have a north star that you are working towards, then you know how well you are doing. It is harder to be in denial or to participate in activities that are less helpful in meeting that goal.
There are 2 parts to this discussion.
✒️ Work with your team or mentor and identify the key metric you are hoping to help move. Post daily (or the cadence that makes sense) in the 3 key things thread to highlight what you are doing to help us move 7 Cups forward. Please post here why this goal of choosing a single metric is important. Think of how this is important in your professional life, but also how this can help you personally as well.
✒️ (TW: themes that deal with death) Read chapter 12 of our Searching Soul book and do the exercise where you imagine it is the end of your life. If comfortable, post what you imagine people saying to you at the conclusion of the exercise. If comfortable, then please share how the exercise impacted you. What you imagine them telling you is your compass. If you are acting in a way that is consistent with what they are saying, then it is very likely that you will end up living a meaningful life. Remember to listen to and follow this compass so as not to be distracted by the clock.

Choosing a single metric is really important since it keeps an individual's focus on one factor and perfecting that one factor might end up leading to a success. For an example, as mentioned in the video, Spotify attempts to increase the number of hours people spend listening to music, and that is their key metric. If they attempted to increase the number of downloads as well, the focus would be divided so will the resources of marketing and advertising. But by focusing all their resources on one single factor which is to increase the number of hours spent, they have become a well-known sound streaming app. Something I personally am focusing on right now is becoming a good student. So at the moment most of my focus and concentration will be on revision and studies.
@Snowpudding
I think that being a good student is a great metric to have! Being a student is one of many roles we have in our lives and by prioritizing your role as a student, you can ensure your academic success, which may lead to lots of opportunities down the line. It sounds like you are really setting yourself up for both personal and professional success!

The goal of choosing a single metric is important because it helps us hone in on our objective & focus on what is important.

I imagine that my close friends say that I was warm, vibrant, that I make a difference in the world and that I am loved. I imagine that my family say that I was a prime example of gratitude and mindfulness. They say that I was creative, forward thinking, and that my work changed lives. Maybe some individuals share stories of how my life's work changed their life. My work partners say that I was a thoughtful leader, a pioneer of community change, and that I pushed them to grow and be a better person. My romantic partners say that I was warm, enchanting, and adventurous. Pictures and stories of my wide travels are shared and various work projects are mentioned.
I enjoyed this exercise, I do think it is a little jarring to think about my death but I think it's an important perspective to take and I enjoyed this approach. It gives me a different framework of thinking about my long term goals and my biggest dreams.
@Kait
I hope you don't mind me saying, but I love how you talk about yourself in the reflection exercise, it highlights your values and how much you care and support others. It's truly inspiring and quite wonderful. :)
@FrenchToast
It's important to focus on a single metric, because it's easy to get distracted on a singular goal itself and may require all your time to achieve this singular goal. As far as the second exercise is concerned, I already did something similar in a college health class where we are tasked with understanding the different stages of dying. I would say it's easier to look back on your life if you have felt you have achieved everything you have wanted to as this would help temper various expectations of how people would perceive you when dying.

Because single metric can help us improve for long term goal.

I will say FrenchToast is supportive.

Choosing a core metric helps you stay focused on what matters most, both professionally and personally. It ensures your actions align with your goals, avoiding distractions and helping you track progress. Professionally, it aligns with company objectives and improves time management. Personally, it gives direction and purpose.
Reflecting on what you'd like people to say about you at the end of your life serves as a guide for intentional living. It ensures that your current actions align with the legacy you want to leave.

I think choosing a single metric helps you focus on it rather than getting pulled in a million different directions. It can be incredibly hard to focus on more than one and if you choose a metric that encompasses many different values you can achieve a great deal.

I'd rather not share due to personal circumstances, but I have written it in my journal and intend to reflect on it over the next few days.
