Course 3, Discussion 4: One Key Metric

FrenchToast December 5th, 2022

It is pretty easy to get knocked off track in life. One way to stay on track is to have a core metric that guides you. If you have a north star that you are working towards, then you know how well you are doing. It is harder to be in denial or to participate in activities that are less helpful in meeting that goal.

Please watch this video

There are 2 parts to this discussion.

✒️ Work with your team or mentor and identify the key metric you are hoping to help move. Post daily (or the cadence that makes sense) in the 3 key things thread to highlight what you are doing to help us move 7 Cups forward. Please post here why this goal of choosing a single metric is important. Think of how this is important in your professional life, but also how this can help you personally as well.

✒️ (TW: themes that deal with death) Read chapter 12 of our Searching Soul book and do the exercise where you imagine it is the end of your life. If comfortable, post what you imagine people saying to you at the conclusion of the exercise. If comfortable, then please share how the exercise impacted you. What you imagine them telling you is your compass. If you are acting in a way that is consistent with what they are saying, then it is very likely that you will end up living a meaningful life. Remember to listen to and follow this compass so as not to be distracted by the clock.

✒️ Please reply to at least 1 of your peers in this thread with encouraging or supportive words!

After fulfilling the requirements of this post, please check out the next post here!

@FrenchToast

It is important to choose a single metric because it provides clarity and direction. By operating under a single metric, I can make better decisions that are in alignment with my goals and vision. As a leader or within my professional life, a single metric allows me to fulfill my team's objectives and practice accountability. As for my personal life, it can help to track my personal growth and consequently, identify areas for improvement.

I have read the chapter but could not complete the exercise as it was triggering for me.

Thank you for sharing your insights. You were very concise and to the point.

On a personal note, it's comforting to know I wasn't the only one who was triggered by the exercise.

It is important to choose a single metric that can bring long-term success. After identifying this metric, it should help align you toward the right strategy to achieve this success. You can apply this to your professional and personal life. For example, in my personal life, I would like to be remembered as a great mother. Therefore, I need to do things that will help me achieve this goal.

I'm not ready to complete this exercise.

I think they might say I was a loving family woman who lived a full life travelling and enjoyed a career in teaching and felt the saying ‘do a job you love and never work a day in your life’ . I found this exercise moving to do.

I find it so important to utilize all techniques to help me stay focused on my goals. This helps me to better meet the needs of members and other listeners. I also realize how important it is to maintain open communication on a group and individual basis.

I read the chapter and found it quite moving, I think people would say I was a caring and giving person who valued family.

Choosing a single metric is crucial because it provides a clear focus for driving progress and making measurable improvements. For 7 Cups, this goal helps streamline efforts and ensures the entire team aligns their strategies toward achieving a common objective, ultimately leading to more impactful outcomes for users and the platform.

Professionally, focusing on a single metric prevents dilution of efforts and helps track success more effectively, enabling better decision-making and resource allocation. Personally, it teaches discipline and clarity, helping me prioritize what truly matters in achieving my goals, whether in work, relationships, or personal growth. This approach fosters a sense of accomplishment and measurable progress in all areas of life.

I have done it but I am not comfortable with sharing it. I hope you understand.

I am a part of the Peer Support team and I often help out in the Listener Support Room. It's important to identify and choose a single metric because it provides clarity in regard to goal-setting, and it makes it easier to understand the type of service that is to be offered.

I found the exercise hauntingly thought-provoking. I'll choose not to disclose my answers for personal reasons.
