Course 1, Discussion 5: 7 Cups Culture

Hello Leadership Crew!
I hope you have been benefitting from this course. This is the last discussion of our course 1.
We take culture seriously on 7 Cups because it is the heart of how we operate. A wise person once said: You teach what you know, but you reproduce who you are. We can have all of the best training content we want, but if our culture is not strong, then we will not be successful in growing a thriving, compassionate, community that will make a global impact.
Every organization has a culture whether by design or by default. When culture (including values and mission are not called out or made explicit, the organization defaults to an implicit or unstated culture. The unnamed culture is not always great for the end users or the community. An example of a common and implicit cultural rule or norm is that the person that makes the most money or the organization is the most important. People that work in this organization then, naturally, because it is the culture, start organizing themselves around ways to make more and more money. The ones at the top of the hierarchy are the ones that make the most money. 7 Cups cares less about money and more about compassion. We call out compassion and celebrate compassionate people because that is central to the work we do.
Please read our guide here to deeply understand our culture. We have made it explicit because we believe it is important to help us all be accountable to what we stand for and believe in. As leaders on 7 Cups, you will be models that emulate our culture and values.

I learned (1) Accountability, (2) Solving the biggest problem, (3) Fulfilling work. They are important to me because I learned if we focus on these qualities, they will actually help us in working productively.

@Hope
I like the ideas of solving problems that matter, trying hard, and collaborating from the guide.

@Clairvoyantmercenary Those are really great things you learned! ✨

Thanks! I hope you get a lot out of the course as well.

@Hope
From the guide, the three key things I learned are:
- Setting clear goals – Helps me stay focused and manage time effectively.
- Building a supportive environment – Encouragement from others keeps me motivated.
- Consistency and self-reflection – Regular progress checks help me stay aligned with my goals and grow.

These are good highlights from the guide

@H4RIS
I like this.

@H4RIS
Really important points from the guide :)

To help make it more real, in this post, please highlight the 3 most important things you learned from our guide and why they are important to you.
- Skin in the game. Accountability is important for anything of value.
- The idea of being a "world class expert". Learning is a part of who I am, and I'm excited about a volunteer experience that helps me learn more about the world.
- I liked the idea of collaboration. The example of a programmer and community manager will have different solutions to the same task is a nice example to remind us to work with each other

@Hope
- "A person might be in one role early on in the company and then no longer be a good fit for that role as the company evolves." I think this is a really vital point but I'd also like to add, "And as the person evolves." Sometimes, a person can find their strengths change with their environment or personal circumstances and that may mean they would be better in a different role.
- We expect failure and failure is expected and okay.
- "We don’t differentiate between your personal self and work self. You are the same person. In order to perform well at work, you need to also take good care of yourself when you are not at work." I love this so much. I wish I had something to comment about it, but I just think it's so wonderful it speaks for itself!

- Compassion: Compassion is central to everything we do at 7 Cups. This is crucial because it keeps us focused on caring for others and making a real difference.
- Clear Culture: Having an explicit culture ensures everyone knows what we stand for. This is vital for building trust and accountability within the community.
- Leading by Example: As leaders, we set the tone for others. This is important because it motivates others to embody the values and culture we aim to build.

@Abdul010
Thank you for highlighting these, and I appreciate you sharing what matters most to you!

1.Friendliness and Conscientiousness, which are important to me because I can mirror the person I am offsite easier. Especially knowing that Conscientiousness comes with ease to me after completing my big 5. Being friendly and conscientious is always a wonderful way to grow a community. 2. Trust, which is another important and very necessary thing especially when having many listeners speak to members daily. 3. Your work matters, which to me is important because everyone's thoughts, work ethic and ambition should be noticed!

@InsightfulPhoenix Hi Phoenix! Nice to reply to you again! I didn't notice it was you until I clicked the "reply" button and saw your username haha. I love that the first answer you gave were friendliness and consciousness, it is so important, specially here at 7cups, where many people are in vulnerable positions and here finally have the trust to open their own feelings and experiences that may not tell to everyone.

I think it's important for me to understand that it's my responsibility as a leader to lead by example, to ensure that all of my peers are happy.
Work hard but not overworked, by working hard you're minimizing the time spent working or having to recomplete tasks.
Teamwork- Teamwork can not only boost confidence within your team but can also ensure a job is done quicker and better collected.
