Course 1, Discussion 5: 7 Cups Culture

Hope December 5th, 2022

Hello Leadership Crew!

I hope you have been benefitting from this course. This is the last discussion of our course 1.

We take culture seriously on 7 Cups because it is the heart of how we operate. A wise person once said: You teach what you know, but you reproduce who you are. We can have all of the best training content we want, but if our culture is not strong, then we will not be successful in growing a thriving, compassionate, community that will make a global impact.

Every organization has a culture whether by design or by default. When culture (including values and mission are not called out or made explicit, the organization defaults to an implicit or unstated culture. The unnamed culture is not always great for the end users or the community. An example of a common and implicit cultural rule or norm is that the person that makes the most money or the organization is the most important. People that work in this organization then, naturally, because it is the culture, start organizing themselves around ways to make more and more money. The ones at the top of the hierarchy are the ones that make the most money. 7 Cups cares less about money and more about compassion. We call out compassion and celebrate compassionate people because that is central to the work we do.

Please read our guide here to deeply understand our culture. We have made it explicit because we believe it is important to help us all be accountable to what we stand for and believe in. As leaders on 7 Cups, you will be models that emulate our culture and values.

-Caring for People with Fewer Financial Resources

-Try Hard

-Accountability

We live in a world where money is one of the sources of our basic needs. Not a few folks have access to money. Therefore, I believe these key factors are what important me while going through the guideline.

Caring for people with fewer financial ressources. It is important to care about them because we are a team. We can help them to live a better life.

Trust. To do a great work, we have to be able to trust each other.

Try hard. If we do not try hard for things we want to do, we will not have a lot of chances to succeed.

@Hope What stood out to me the most was collaboration, compassion, self-efficacy, and self-care. These are highly important values for me since I was young as I believe our society would be a better place if we took care of ourselves and others

@Cynthialy

Absolutely! It's inspiring to see your dedication to values like collaboration, compassion, self-efficacy, and self-care from a young age. These qualities truly make a positive difference in our world. Keep nurturing these values—they will continue to guide you towards making meaningful impacts in both your personal life and society as a whole. Your commitment is commendable!

2 - It's okay to get things wrong and the most important thing is to realise your mistakes and learn from them

3 - Work hard for your role and prioritise yourself and your mental health and this will allow you to perform better

✒️ Three Most Important Things I Learned

  1.  7 Cups values compassion above making money. This keeps our focus on helping people, not profit.

  2. Stating our values and mission guides our actions and ensures we're all working towards the same goals.

  3. Recognizing compassionate actions encourages more kindness and empathy in our community.

These points remind me that staying compassionate, aligned, and encouraging is key to building a strong, supportive community.

✒️To help make it more real, in this post, please highlight the 3 most important things you learned from our guide and why they are important to you.

1) Expect failure.

As a perfectionist, this is something I really need to remember, and to remind myself that failure is okay and is how we continue to learn.

2) Take care of yourself.

Often, I put everybody else first and forget that I need to look after myself too. I aim to practice a form of self-care every day. I can't pour from an empty cup.

3) Self-efficacy/mastery.

This is important for me as I want to grow my practice and become more confident in my abilities.

The 3 most important things I learned from the 7 Cups guide that are important to me are the following:

Accountability because it makes sure you do tasks efficiently and be responsible for the work you do.

Taking Care of Yourself because it prevents you from burning out and allows you to give your best efforts in your work.

Collaboration because teamwork is efficient, supportive/inclusive, and allows a range of ideas to be shared.
