Course 1, Discussion 4: System vs Goals

Hello Leadership Crew!
Welcome to our 4th discussion in this first course. In today's discussion, we will be talking about systems vs. goals.
To start, please read this post here and watch this video.
The basic argument here is that having a system is better than having a goal. A system is a way of behaving that helps you move towards accomplishing something. A goal is usually and end state that happens after you have accomplished something. I think eating healthy is a good example. A goal might be to lose 10 pounds. In this case, you feel kind of bad about yourself until you hit that goal; and then, once you hit it, you kind of lose the purpose because the goal has been reached. If you relapse and gain wait again, then you fall back into feeling bad about yourself again. Contrast this with a system of eating healthy.
A system might include things like: having a big glass of water prior to each meal; eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, and nuts; not eating after 9pm; and/or doing some level of intermittent fasting. You wouldn't integrate all of these new healthy eating behaviors at once. Instead, you'd gradually introduce one and then another and then another over whatever period of time makes sense. The system enables you to continuously get healthier and healthier. You will eventually reach the goal, but it'll be the byproduct of eating healthy.
This also has implications for 7 Cups as well. We might have goals of having a certain amount of group support messages or 1:1 messages. Those are fine goals to have, but we mostly want to create a system of support where people care for one another and then the natural result is an increased number of messages.

@Hope ✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
My autistic self doesn't understand if this questio is content related or a personal answers, but I'm going to give a personal answers. My system would be related to my own academic studies, including not only my high school grades (which, from my point of view, are really limited here in Chile) but also a lot of self-learning, making a curriculum, improving my skills in 7cups, participating in psychology international free contests (which exist, since here in Chile there aren't contest for high schoolers psychology related). I want to make an habit of studying and reading, since even if I don't "succeed" into my dream university (Universidad Pontificia Catolica), I know all of these learnings and new experiences will help me not only to gain more career related experiences, but also to grow as a person along with seeing how far I come, which is the biggest and realest succeed.
✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
Reading at least 10 minutes a day (usually light non-fiction, with not-so dense content)
Having a good sleep schedule (I have trouble sleeping, and that highly affects concentration, plus my ADHD, so I'm really messy haha)
DRINKING WATER (I'm so bad at drinking water, I avoid it so much)

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
A system that would benefit me is a work schedule. I often find that i make a goal list of things I want to get done in my personal work life and on 7 cups before the week is done however I believe having a consistent work routine throughout the week would allow for these to be achieved.
✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
Waking up at a certain time, Arriving to my working location at a certain time, Assigning a number of uninterrupted work hours a day

@Dash0 That sounds like such a solid plan! Keep that routine going and watch yourself grow! 💪📚 You’ve totally got this! 🙌

@Hope
1. Reminding myself to live in the present moment ⭐️ since I usually think about past and mostly future, I believe that living in the moment can increase lot of happiness, openness and joy into life.
2. That would be openness to new experiences, ambitions, patience

@helianthus19
This is a really beautiful system. I really think I need that too. I like to think too far sometimes and I feel like I just need to focus on now. Beautiful system you have here!

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed? For me, a key system I need to create is a system for improving my sleep habits. I’ve noticed that when my sleep schedule is all over the place, it affects my energy and focus the next day. I want to build a healthier routine that helps me wake up feeling rested and ready to take on the day.
